1 07 Florida 4-H Insect Collection Contest The Insect Collection Contest will be held during the 07 4-H University. The Insect Collections will be due at the NEW Entomology ID and Skillathon Contest in January 08. Save the date for January 0, 08! Registration Send the 4-Her's name, county, 4-H club name, phone number, address, and 4-H age (by September, 06) by to by July 0, 07. Judges from the UF Entomology Department will evaluate the collections at 4-H University and will leave the prizes with the registration desk for 4HU. Collections may be delivered and returned by the county 4-H agent, so be sure to make contact with them about your interest in Entomology. There will be a st, nd, and 3 rd place winner for juniors, intermediates, and seniors. And, there will be one age winner per division for the specialty collection. Senior winners of the contest will be announced at the 4HU awards ceremony. Delivering Collections Collections must be delivered to the 4HU registration desk by 9 am Tuesday, August. Collections can be delivered by your county agent. Picking Up Collections Collections must be picked up at the 4HU registration desk by 4 pm, Thursday, August 3.
2 Cloverbuds Clovebuds may submit -5 insects pinned or on cotton batting in a cardboard box. Juniors Juniors may use Cornell drawers, insect boxes (usually black cardboard boxes with clear tops), or Bioquip cardboard boxes. Junior winners will be determined by: 4-H Age Display Maximum # of Boxes 8 0 insects Identified, pinned, and labeled 9 0 insects Identify all insects by common name and identify 5 insects with their orders 0 30 insects Identify all insects by common name and identify 5 insects with their orders
3 Intermediates Intermediates may use Cornell drawers or insect boxes. No Bioquip cardboard boxes Intermediate winners will be determined by: 4-H Age Display Maximum # of Boxes 40 insects, minimum of 6 orders Identify all insects by common name and order 50 insects, minimum of 8 orders Identify all insects by common name and order. Identify 0 to family insects, minimum of 0 orders Identify all insects by common name and order. Identify 30 to family.
4 Seniors Seniors must use Cornell drawers. Educational theme Seniors must create a collection box based off of their assigned theme and develop a printed PowerPoint about their theme to submit with their box. Note: For the contest, seniors will be required to give their presentation in front of a panel of judges. Senior winners will be determined by: Presentation quality Educational box innovativeness 4-H Age Display Educational Theme 4 70 insects, minimum of orders Insect Behavior Maximum # of Boxes 5 80 insects, minimum of 4 orders 6 90 insects, minimum of 6 orders insects, minimum of 8 orders Insect Pest Management Benefits of Insects Insects in Medicine
5 Specialty Collection Division Participants must use Cornell drawers. The specialty collection division will allow 4-H members to demonstrate knowledge in a specific entomology area. The specialty collection could be based on a specific order (Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, etc.), could show specific insect damage (insects that damage vegetable crops), could be based on environment (insects of upland hardwood ecosystems), could show invasive insects or non-insect arthropods, or more. This collection will be accompanied by an essay that explains why this collection was chosen and what was learned while creating the collection. Juniors Contain a minimum of 0 specimens Essays should include 3 paragraphs and a minimum of 50 words. Intermediates Contain a minimum of 5 specimens Essays should include 4 paragraphs and a minimum of 300 words. Seniors Contain a minimum of 30 specimens Essays should include 5 paragraphs and a minimum of 500 words. 4-H age winners will be determined by: Collection innovativeness Uniqueness Essay
