1 Conservation Club of Brockport August A CONSERVATION, SPORTING, and SOCIAL CLUB, FOR OVER 50 YEARS Fall Raffle While ticket stub returns have been steady, only 267 of the over 800 that were mailed or signed out, have been returned. With only 7 weeks left till raffle day, we really need to start seeing stubs and money turned in. If you ve sold tickets and have not yet turned in the money and stubs, please try to get to the club and turn them in. If you haven t sold or bought any tickets yet, please support your club and purchase or sell the 2 tickets that were mailed out to you. If you don t have access to the club house yet, you can stop by the club during Monday Night Trap, or any Thursday night during Pistol. No General Meetings During Summer Summer is almost over and so is our break from our monthly General Meetings. The General meetings will resume on Wednesday, September 12 th. As a reminder to anyone who is considering running for office in the December General Elections, you must attend 5 of our 10 scheduled meetings during the calendar year. Club Projects Last month, the club held its first Project Day in a long time. Several members volunteered their time on July 7 th to complete a number of long overdue projects. Painting the outdoor range and storage shed, weeding and mulching the planter area in the front of the club house and power washing the club house. A Thank You mailing went out shortly after and is also attached to the with this newsletter. Since the completion of these projects, a couple more projects needing volunteers have come to light. These projects should be completed before cold weather rolls in. 1. The 2 back doors (bar door and the door to the old men s room) need to be painted and the moldings scraped and painted. 2. The windows of the club house need the molding and trim scraped and painted. (there are several windows so the more volunteers the quicker the job will get done) If you are able to help with these projects please reply to ccobnews@gmail.com. CCOB Trap Class The Trap Guys recently completed their first trap shooting class since the 90's. A total of ten students participated in 5 sessions focused upon teaching the basics of shotgun safety, handling and trap shooting. Of the ten students, 7 were first time shotgunners. (Achieving our goal of teaching trap to new shooters.) All 10 participants were successful in breaking clay and all but one are planning to continue shooting trap. Several are already planning to purchase new shotguns and join our club trap shooting activities. A survey was passed around to the attendees at the last class and the feedback was consistently positive. There were no recommendations to change any of the content/material that was

2 2 presented. They plan to make a few small adjustments to the content and try to compress the schedule to two sessions per week for future classes. The good news is that there is now a structured program and a core group of experienced instructors to teach future courses and will also enlist other trap shooters from the club for future classes. We d like to thank the following people for making this trap class possible: Mike Camman; for providing his thoughts on how to proceed with the class. Mike Cyr, Fred Fraser, Gary Tviet, Brent Horschel, Earl Lucas and Pam O'Brian for providing the student instruction and helping to finalize the training materials. Harold Cator; for his assistance teaching club safety rules, as well as his generosity towards the students. Because of the success of this class, we expect to offer another class next year and possibly offer two classes each year ongoing. Hunter Safety The Conservation Club of Brockport is looking for experienced outdoorsmen and women willing to share their knowledge of hunting and safety by joining our team of Hunter Safety Class instructors. Help carry on the legacy of our forefathers by volunteering a few hours of your time a couple times a year to teach this rewarding lifestyle to new hunters. John Eeckhout at huntsafe@hushmail.com for more info. Genesee Valley Trap League After the July 7 th and 8 th shoot at Barre, Brockport moved up to 6 th place. Brent Horschel and Ken Eich both shot 49 s and Jerry Cox holds the high average for Brockport with a (Results of the shoot at Coon Club were not available when this newsletter was published.) The League s next shoots are August 18 th and 19 th at Brockport and August 25 th and 26 th at 5- Point. Shooting times run 8 am 2pm on Saturdays, and 8am noon on Sundays. Shooting Fee: $11.00 for 50 rounds $4.00 for Jr./Sub Jr. For more info contact Brent Horschel at brent_horschel@yahoo.com In-House Trap League This never mentioned before league is a shooting contest between Brockport trap shooters which takes place during Monday Night Trap. Scoring is tallied from their Monday Night Trap shooting results. This summer there were 21 participants, in 3 divisions. They finished their 2018 season this past Monday, August 6 th. Prize money is awarded to the top 3 shooters in each class. 3 3 High overall average was Brent Horschel with an average of Open Trap Monday Night Trap is open every Monday. Even holidays. Shooting starts at 5:30 pm, and runs until 9:00 pm. All members are welcome as well as the general public. The cost is $3.50 per round for members, $4.00 per round for non-members and $2 per round for shooters under the age of 18. Members can purchase 10-Shoot punch cards for $30.00 at any of the Club s General meetings. If you are interested, free trap shooting lessons are available for beginning shooters. **We could always use member help opening up on Monday nights, as well as stocking the houses, and scoring targets.** Contact Brent Horschel at: brent.horschel@gmail.com for details, questions, or if you d like to help out. Pistol Turnout has been steady, but we could always use some new shooters. If you re not sure, come on out and watch. Shooting starts promptly at 6:00 rain or shine. Hope to see you there. Flying Arrow Archery Flying Arrow s next 2 shoots will be held on August 12 th and September 9 th. These shoots are the perfect opportunity for getting some practice in before archery season. It s closer than you think. Rule #13: All shooting will be conducted from inside the building only. Rule #14: Shooters will indicate any repairs that are needed on the sign in sheet. (Feel free to volunteer to make any repairs) 1. Soak the potatoes in cold water for at least an hour or overnight, and then drain well. 2. Preheat the oven to 375 F. 3. Butter the bottom of an ovenproof baking or gratin dish, then add one layer of sliced potatoes. Season with salt and pepper. 4. Add a layer of fish, followed by a layer of potatoes, then another layer of fish. Continue, ending with a layer of potatoes. 5. Whisk together the nutmeg, thyme, cream, and lemon zest, then pour over the potatoes and fish. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. 6. Remove the foil and bake for another 45 minutes, or until browned and bubbling. Serve immediately. Board Members
