1 Topic: Zoo Animals Level: Pre-Intermediate + Aim: to practise listening to authentic material, to read an authentic leaflet, to describe animals (it s got, it lives in, it can ) and to use the language learnt to write student's own leaflet. Warm Up: put students into two teams or pairs and ask them to write down as many zoo animals as they can think of in one minute. Go through the answers writing them on the board in columns for each team (each animal can only be said once). Then get students to think about what the animals eat, where they are from, which is the strongest etc. Listening: students watch the TED talk about a talking animal and answer the questions What is the parrot's name? 2. Which word makes the parrot sneeze? 3. What size peanut does the parrot want? 4. What does the parrot think are dangerous jobs? 5. Does the parrot like to dance? 6. Which instrument could the parrot sing opera along to? 7. What was the parrot embarrassed to say? 8. When is Al Gore's birthday? 9. Name 5 animal noises the parrot can make: 10. Why do we need to protect the parrot's home?
2 Reading: read the leaflet (or if students have computers or smartphones - the website colchester-zoo.com/) about Colchester Zoo and answer the questions. True or false? is year if the snake 2. You can feed the giraffes at the zoo 3. It costs 2.50 entry for babies men built the bear enclosure 1. What is the address of the zoo? 2. How many types of animals are there at the zoo? 3. How long did it take to build the new bear enclosure? 4. What's new in summer 2014? 5. How much is parking? 6. On which days is the zoo closed? 7. Name three things you can do at the zoo (apart from see animals) 8. What do you like and dislike about this leaflet?
3 Speaking: print and cut up all of the animal words in the document and play a game a bit like taboo. Demonstrate the game. Show that you have one minute on the clock. Then describe your first card to the class until they guess correctly, and move on to the next until the time has finished. Count your cards correctly guessed. Split the class into two teams. The first team sends their first player to the front of the room. This player will have one minute (try to display the time on an egg timer or phone) and they have to describe each card until their team mates correctly guess it, then they move to the next card until the minute is over. The team receive a point for each correct card. In one-to-one classes or smaller groups of 3-4 students you can play as individuals - giving points to the person describing for the amount of correct cards. For a weaker student you can allow them 2 minutes and the teacher one minute. This game gets very exciting - and students who previously haven t spoken much will suddenly remember everything Writing: create your own leaflet about a new animal arriving at the zoo in your town. Include: A description which makes tourists want to visit Interesting facts about the animal Directions to the animal s new home Prices for feeding the animal/riding the animal etc Contact details to book your visit
