1 SwitchZoo Project Overview As you learned already, the Jackalope is a hoax. It was created by a creative person that simply took antelope antlers and added them to a jackrabbit using common computer software. Now, you re going to do the same thing. TASK Create your own hybrid animal. You will need to create all aspects of your animal, including: Name (be creative) Scientific Name (use scientific names given on website) Natural predators Natural prey Biology (primate, mammal, fish, reptile, bird, amphibian, arthropod, insect, mollusk, etc.) Offspring (eggs or live birth; single offspring or multiple) Average lifespan Social Life (alone, pack, family structure, etc.) Mobility (aquatic, amphibious, terrestrial) Body Structure (vertebrate or invertebrate) Speed of movement Sound (roar, growl, hiss, bark, yip, squeal, etc.) Habitat (tree, under ground, cave, etc.) Region/Climate (part of world and climate) Environment (tropical, arctic, forest, desert, savannah, aquatic, etc.) Migration Pattern (if any when/where) Diet (carnivore, herbivore, or omnivore include preferences) Daily activity routine (nocturnal, diurnal) Sleep Pattern (hibernation length/times, etc.) Digestion (chew, swallow whole, regurgitation, etc.) Consumption rate (how much food it eats per day) Unique Characteristics (walks upright, flies, slithers, swims, glides, crawls, trunk, tusks, antlers, fangs, quills, venom, claws, etc.) DIRECTIONS Go to SwitchZoo website (link can be found on class website under the links tab). Familiarize yourself with the features on SwitchZoo s website. Create your own hybrid animal using the website s built-in UI software. Answer ALL questions on SwitchZoo Project Answer Sheet. INSTRUCTIONS/DETAILS You MUST use a Head, Body, Legs, and Tail from Four (4) different animals. You MUST use facts from SwitchZoo website to compile facts about your animal. ALL answers/information MUST be logical based on the body parts you choose. You MUST Be Creative! RESOURCES SwitchZoo Animal List and Profiles Animal Search

2 HOW-TO 1. Go to SwitchZoo website using the link above, or the link on class website. 2. Select one of the animals on the oval to start your own animal. a. NOTE: If you want to choose an animal that is NOT in the oval, you can click on the red Rhino below the oval that reads: Switch Zoo Animal List to choose a different animal. 3. The following example shows what the screen will look like if you choose the Bison from the oval.

3 4. To change the head, legs, or tail of the animal you choose to begin with, select from the menu found below the animal. HEAD LEGS TAIL 5. A variety of options for each body part will appear to the left of your animal as shown above. 6. The following is an example of an animal that began as a Bison, and was then changed to include the head of a Kodiak Brown Bear, the legs of a Bengal Tiger, and the tail of a Shetland Pony.

4 7. Below your animal is a brief list of facts for each part of your animal. For more details and facts about your animal, click on the Animal List and Profiles link on page one or on the class website. 8. Then select one of your animal s parts to see more facts. 9. Once you have created your masterpiece, compiled all the facts and information about your animal, and answered all the questions on the Switch Zoo Project Answer Sheet, take a picture of your animal by clicking the CAMERA icon on the menu below your animal.

10. You will then see a photograph with information about your new animal below. 11. Now use the Print Screen feature to capture your picture and paste it into MS Word. a. Press the Function key Fn and the Print Screen key Prt Scr at the same time.

If using a Mac, press the Apple key, the Shift key, and the 3 key at the same time. 12. Open a new MS Word document and paste your picture.

15. Now Crop your picture, using the Crop tool in the Picture Toolbar. 16.

6 13. Crop the excess space around your picture to only show your animal. 14. Click on the picture and the Picture Toolbar will appear. a. NOTE: Your Picture Toolbar may not appear in the exact location shown below. 15. Now Crop your picture, using the Crop tool in the Picture Toolbar. 16. Paste your animal picture into the Switch Zoo Project Answer Sheet. 17. Make sure you answered all the questions and filled in all the information on the answer sheet. 18. You re Done! Congratulations You ve just created your own animal.
