African Lions Lions live in a large group called Prides. Prides are just like a great big family. A pride may include up to three males, a dozen or more females, and their young. In a pride all of the lionesses are related. Typically female cubs stay with their group as they age. The young males on the other hand eventually set out to leave and establish their own prides by taking over a group that is headed by another male lion.

The male lions are typically the ones that have manes. Like in the picture aboe you see the fringes of long hair encircling the face. The males are the ones that defend the prides territory. The males are very intimidating ting and mark their area with urine, roar loudly to warn intruders, and they chase off animals that enter their territory. The female lions are the primary hunters for the pride. They are the ones who do the hard work and yet sometimes don t really get their fair share to eat. The lionesses often work together to prey upon antelopes, zebras, wildebeest, and other large animals that are in the open grasslands. These lions have to have teamwork because many of the animals are faster than the lions.

Lions are found only in parts of the sub-saharan in Africa. There is one very small population of Asian lions that survive in India s Gir Forest. The areas the lions live are of grasslands, scrub, or other open woodlands. Lions are facing extinction and that is due to habitat and humans. Humans are the lion s biggest threat.

Comprehension Questions On which continent do lions live? What is causing the extinction of lions? What do the female lionesses do for the pride? Do the young males stay with the pride or do they eventually go off on their own?

What do the male lions of the pride do? What is a pride and what does it consist of?

African Lion Craft This craft I cannot take credit for as it was not my idea; however, I will share the link that I got the idea from and show you the picture of what my kids results were. What I loved about this craft is that it consists of a printable for the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears. You paint a paper plate with yellow and orange, or you could do yellow and brown. Lion Paper Plate Craft Here are the kid s results. On another note DLTK also has many other lion crafts in case you re interested.
