In Memory of David Sheldrick The extraordinary career of David Lesllie William Sheldrick, MBE, the Founder Warden of Kenya s giant Tsavo National Park, was cut short by his untimely death in Nevertheless, he is remembered as one of Africa s most accomplished Park Wardens. David Sheldrick s legacy lives on in the work of his widow, an internationally recognized authority on the hand-rearing of wild creatures, the unceasing work of his daughter Angela, now President of DSWT and the around-the-clock efforts of the staff. Since David s death, Daphne and her family have lived and worked in Nairobi National Park and built the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) into a global force for wildlife conservation. Achieving successes that would have been incomprehensible even a few years ago, DSWT has made lasting contributions to the preservation of endangered species and habitats. For over a quarter century, David s wife, Daphne, working alongside him, handraised and rehabilitated numerous wild species. The wildlife conservation work of Dame Daphne M. Sheldrick, D.B.E., has now spanned a lifetime. She is a recognized international authority on the hand-rearing and rehabilitation of wild creatures. She perfected the milk formula and husbandry methods required to enable milk-dependent orphaned elephants and rhinos to survive and thrive. 3 Mission of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust To enhance all measures that complement the conservation, preservation and protection of wildlife. The long-range goal of the DSWT is to secure safe havens for wildlife through effective protection and management of critical ecosystems and wilderness areas in Kenya. The DSWT, in partnership with the KWS, the custodian of Kenya s wildlife and National Parks, the Kenya Forest Service and local communities, the DSWT is taking the lead in conserving wildlife and securing large wilderness areas for their safety and well-being. The front line, hands-on work of DSWT covers thousands of square miles. Directed from Headquarters in Nairobi and Kaluku, located in the Tsavo Conservation Area, the men and women of the DSWT work tirelessly to carry out the mission. 4 About the U.S. Friends of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Founded in 24 as a tax-exempt public charity, U.S. Friends of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (USF) offers U.S. contributors the opportunity to support the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) on a tax-advantaged basis inasmuch as contributions made directly to DSWT do not qualify for deduction for federal income tax purposes. It s mission is to provide financial support, in the form of grants, to DSWT. U.S. Friends of The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust From its beginnings as a grass roots, volunteer-based, organization, USF has expanded its capabilities with two staff positions while retaining its volunteer Board of Directors. It is uniquely situated to receive grants from private foundations which are otherwise required to satisfy burdensome legal requirements in making grants directly to foreign charities. USF seeks to raise, from existing and new contributors, gifts, grants, contributions and bequests. Supporters consist of individuals, corporations, private foundations and public charities. The USF focuses on minimizing overhead expenses and maximizing grants to the DSWT. From 25 through 213, its overhead or administration expenses averaged approximately 7.5 percent of gross receipts. During that period, USF made 155 separate grants to DSWT. All support of the DSWT by USF consists of grants made against written applications submitted by DSWT. All grants are approved in writing by the Board of Directors and are the subject of written agreements with the DSWT which require proof of expenditure of grant funds by the DSWT. US Dollars Since 25, USF grants to DSWT have steadily increased from $123,589 to $1,647,345 for total grants of $4,746,961. 1,8, 1,6, 1,4, 1,2, 1,, 8, 6, 4, 2, $123,589 $215,514 USF Grants to DSWT, $354,713 $31,99 $422,667 $518,58 $61,291 $552,344 $1,647,

ORPHANS PROJECT At the heart of the DSWT s conservation efforts is the Orphans Project, which has received worldwide acclaim through its highly successful elephant and rhino rescue and rehabilitation program. To date, the DSWT has rescued and hand-reared over 16 baby elephants and 14 black rhinos who were made orphans principally due to the killing of their mothers but also by the natural deaths of or separation from their mothers. In addition to funding the cost of food, veterinary services, medicines and medical equipment, USF has funded construction costs for the reintegration facility at Ithumba (Tsavo Northern Area) and the renovation of the Orphan Stockades at Voi in Tsavo. Likewise, USF has funded numerous upgrades to the facilities in the Nairobi Nursery. US Dollars Since 25, USF has made 64 grants totaling $1,623,92 in support of the DSWT s Orphans Project. USF Orphan Project Grants, , 4, $384,448 35, 3, 25, $245,189 2, $193,48 $29,425 $184,954 $158,971 15, $14,74 1, 5, $67, $75, ORPHAN MARA AT RESCUE SITE Personnel stationed at all DSWT locations are deployed to rescue orphaned baby elephants and rhinos throughout Kenya. Most are carried out by airlift to the Nairobi Nursery. With the new USF-funded Sky Vets Programs, many orphans now receive critical care at the rescue site. ORPHAN RHINO AT RESCUE SITE

ANTI-POACHING PROJECT The DSWT is on the front line in the battle to save the African Elephant and Rhino. It deploys eight (soon to be nine) anti-poaching teams in concert with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in the Tsavo, Kibwezi Forest and Amu Conservation Areas. Every team member completes training at the KWS Manyani Academy, where they undergo an intense three-month paramilitary course which includes human-wildlife conflict and mitigation measures, ecology and ecosystem management, capture and arrest methods, weaponry, field survival and GPS mapping. The DSWT anti-poaching teams have radio-equipped off-road vehicles, camping gear, GPS units and cameras. Thanks in large measure to the generosity of U.S. donors, their efforts are supported through aerial surveillance by three aircraft piloted by employees of the DSWT and by a motorized Rapid Response Unit comprised of KWS Rangers. This specialized support has enabled the DSWT to dramatically increase the effectiveness of its anti-poaching campaign. These teams will soon be reinforced by a helicopter purchased primarily with grant funds provided by USF. Since 25, USF has made 35 grants totaling $1,918,273 in support of the Anti-Poaching Project. Aerial reconnaissance is a vital tool in the effective prevention of illegal activities, increasing security and generating data required to protect the vast Tsavo Conservation Area. With data from the field, the DSWT, utilizing a sophisticated data base, captures vital trends in illegal activities as well as wildlife trends. This data is used by the KWS and the scientific community. US Dollars 1,1, 1,5, 35, 3, 25, 2, 15, 1, 5, USF Anti-Poaching Project Grants, $251,538 $335,56 $1,82,79 $77,851 $53,721 $43,276 $43,351 $17,738 $12, Wildlife trafficking has serious implications for the security and prosperity of people around the world. Hillary Clinton, Former Secretary of State (White House Forum to Counter Wildlife Trafficking, September 213) With the value of ivory and rhino horn...poaching and its potential linkage to other criminal, even terrorist, activities constitute a grave menace to sustainable peace and security in Central Africa. Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations (May 213)

WILDLIFE AND HABITAT PROTECTION The DSWT, in concert with the KWS, and Kenya Forest Service (KFS) manages and protects Kenya s wildlife and habitats through many projects, including electric solarpowered fence lines, infrastructure, development of water resources and acquisition and protection of wild habitat areas. Human settlement, cattle grazing and agricultural development are encroaching into wildlife habitats, disrupting migration routes and violating protected boundaries. The use of solar-powered electric fencing of protected boundaries has become a critical part of wildlife conservation in Kenya. Since 27, the DSWT has erected and maintained approximately 85 kilometers (52.8 miles) of fence lines in Tsavo East National Park (solar-powered electric), the Kibwezi Forest (solar-powered electric) and Nairobi National Park (inert). These costs have been funded almost exclusively by USF. The fence lines have proven critical to not only protecting boundaries without disrupting migratory routes, but in preventing incursions into populated areas by elephants and other large species. DSWT likewise establishes and maintains wells and windmills to address the prolonged droughts which plague the Tsavo Conservation Area. To protect the future of wildlife and biodiversity, in partnership with the KFS and community groups, the DSWT has saved and taken responsibility for protecting unique and endangered wild habitats. These areas include the Tsavo Conservation Area (Kenya s largest wildlife refuge), Kibwezi Forest (6km2), Amu Conservation Area (6, acres) and, in the near future, the Witu Forest.. US Dollars 3, 25, 2, 15, 1, 5, USF Wildlife & Habitat Protection Grants, $134,34 $6,357 $134,127 $121,558 $283,134 $112,98 $193, From 27 through 213, USF has made 14 grants totaling $984,986 to DSWT for Wildlife and Habitat Protection. THE AMU CONSERVATION AREA represents one of the most breathtaking and important natural habitats and watersheds in Southeast Africa. The partnership between DSWT and the Lamu Conservation Trust, under which DSWT took responsibility for safeguarding this wild area with the active and unqualified support of the local community, is already proving to be a model for stabilizing and protecting a wild area from the inevitable destruction associated with human and livestock incursion. Home to many unique species, this area was under severe threat before taken in hand by DSWT, whose staff are on site 24/7. Upon completion of stabilization, Amu will be opened to responsible eco-tourism. The Witu Forest, which is adjacent to Amu, will soon be taken in hand as well.

WILDLIFE AND HABITAT PROTECTION Solar powered electric fence line constructed with USF grant funds. Reconditioned windmill and re-drilled well in Tsavo. Human and livestock incursion in Amu Conservation Area before stabilization by DSWT. Even the slightest human incursion in protected habitats can have a devastating effect on the ecosystem.

MOBILE VETERINARY UNITS AND THE SKY VETS PROGRAM DSWT operates three Mobile Veterinary Units in the Tsavo Conservation Area, the Masai Mara and Meru. A fourth unit is scheduled to be deployed in Amboseli National Park in 214. In 213, the DSWT launched the Sky Vets Program which deploys KWS vets by air throughout Kenya. Both the Mobile Veterinary Units and Sky Vets are dedicated to alleviating the human-imposed suffering of wildlife. All units are equipped with customized vehicles and the medicine and equipment necessary to rapidly respond to veterinary emergencies. Since inception, the Mobile Veterinary Units and the new Sky Vets Program have saved the lives of over 6 elephants and hundreds of other species, including lions, giraffes, antelopes of all indigenous species, leopards, cheetah, hippos and buffalos. Although the Mobile Veterinary Units have been funded principally by organizations outside the U.S., the USF has provided supplemental financial support and all funding for the Sky Vets Program. US Dollars USF Mobile Vet Unit & Sky Vet Program Grants, , 175, 15, 125, 1, 75, 5, 25, $186,229 $18,126 $2,72 $4,368 $8, MOBILE VETS IN THE FIELD KWS vet and personnel treat a wounded elephant in the Masai Mara.
