5 2015 Great Nor easter Gunfights of the west Gunfights of the West As I ve mentioned previously Wild Bill Blackerby is an historian who also likes to shoot. With his attention to historical detail we are always sure to have a touch of realism in our stories and starting lines. Here is a taste of what s in store for 2015 GNE attendees: Mattie Silks versus Katie Fulton After numerous rounds of drinking games and bawdy fun, Mattie notices Kate Fulton, another madam from Denver s old red-light district, displaying an extreme amount of affection towards her man. Words are exchanged and threats made, neither of the Madams would back down. A duel is suggested and agreed to To facilitate better aim, both women strip to the waist Wyatt Earp versus Curly Bill Brocius Wyatt slid from his horse, unlimbering his shotgun. Scarely had his feet touched the ground when he let loose both barrels point blank at Curly Bill. The twin charges of buckshot struck him in the chest, literally blowing him apart and hurling him against the opposite bank of the wash. Will Bill Hickok versus Davis Tutt On July 20, 1865, the pair fell out over a game of cards, which left Hickok in debt to Tutt who took his prized Waltham watch as security for payment. Tutt, according to the stories circulated later, said that he would sport Hickok s watch on the Public Square the next afternoon, and Hickok told him that if he did it would become a shooting matter. Billy Thompson versus Chauncey Whitney When Thompson demanded his cut of the winnings, Sterling, aware that Thompson was unarmed, slapped him. John Morco then pulled his pistol and backed Thompson away. Hearing of the trouble, Sheriff Whitney responded, unarmed, and confronted the Thompsons, imploring them to accompany him for a drink and talk the situation over. As they walked to Brennan s, Morco and Sterling moved to intercept them. When another Texan yelled a warning to Ben Thompson, the latter turned and fired a rifle shot at the pair, and heard his brother fire his shotgun from behind him. Turning, Ben Thompson saw his friend Sheriff Whitney wither to the ground, shot,. Believed to have been accidental, Billy Thompson did not rush to flee. Bat Masterson versus A. J. Peacock and Al Updergraff When his train pulled into Dodge City on this morning in 1881, Masterson wasted no time. He quickly spotted Peacock and Updergraff and aggressively shouldered his way through the crowded street to confront them. I have come over a thousand miles to settle this, Masterson reportedly shouted. I know you are heeled now fight!
6 THE GREAT NOR EASTER Deputy Ed Short versus Black-faced Charlie Bryant Cocking his revolver he opened the door, fired at Short hitting him in the left breast. Short started working his rifle and sent three bullets toward Bryant, one slug tore through his body and severed his spinal column. Bryant emptied the revolver at Short as he died. Billy the Kid versus Joe Grant Already in the saloon is a drunk and rowdy patron from Texas known as Joe Grant, sometimes called Texas Red Grant. Grant, who is apparently looking for a reputation as a badman, confronted Billy earlier in the day and said I ll bet $25 I kill a man today before you do. Billy laughed off the bet though, possibly upsetting Grant. Billy Claiborne versus Buckskin Frank Leslie After the Earps had left Tombstone, Leslie became involved in an argument with Billy Claiborne, a survivor of the O.K. Corral gunfight. Claiborne, who demanded to be called Billy the Kid after the death of William Bonney, claimed that he had killed three men who had ridiculed him. On November 14, 1882, Claiborne argued with Leslie, when the gunfighter refused to refer to him as Billy the Kid. Bass Outlaw versus John Selman On April 6, 1894, John Selman met Texas Ranger, Bass Outlaw. Outlaw, who was in a drunken stupor, made his way to Tillie Howard s brothel and Selman followed. As Selman sat in the parlor, Outlaw made his way to the back. A short time later, Bass dropped his gun and it accidentally went off. All hell broke loose. The Trinidad Gunfight Sudenly, a shot rang out from Hammond s Hardware Store and Masterson quickly headed there, meeting Frank coming out the door, saying Jim, I m shot. Having gone into the hardware store to refurbish his ammunition supply, Frank had been struck in the back by a bullet. Four Dead in Five Seconds Gunfight In the meantime, when Campbell saw Hale go down, he exited the saloon, waving his gun and yelling, Gentlemen, this is not my fight! However, the wounded Krempkau disagreed and though down, fired at Campbell, striking him in the wrist and the toe. At the same time, Stoudenmire whirled and also fired on Campbell, pumping three bullets into his stomach. As Campbell crashed to the dusty street, he shouted, You SOB, you have murdered me! Long Branch Saloon Shootout Both men were still standing but Richardson had shot five shells from his gun and Loving s Remington No. 44 was empty. Deputy Sheriff Duffey threw Richardson down in a chair and took his gun, while Bassett disarmed Loving. Richardson then got up and started toward the billiard table, when he fell to the floor with a fatal gunshot in the chest, as well as a shot through the side and another through the right arm. Frank Loving, who ha sonly a slight scratch on the hand, was immediately taken to jail.
