1 SPORTSMEN S NOTES The Official Publication of the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen s Club November 2009 DMSC SHORT SHOTS North Strabane Township has started the installation of the new sewer line through our property. You may have noticed the work on the properties around the club and the flags indicating the path of the installation as it goes across club property. As a result, throughout the next few weeks there will be disruptions in the use of club facilities as the work progresses. For instance, the line will cut through the upper archery range ridge target area and will involve significant trenching. Fortunately, the lower archery range with the 3D targets will continue operation. The sewer will progress just behind the tree line at the far edge of the trap range area, causing the suspension of trap activity. We have already removed the throwers from the hand trap area. The contractor s work will include stockpiling stone, stacking wood, burning brush, and redistributing soil. After completion of the line laying, we will then be able to hook in the waste functions for our club facilities and for our neighboring rental property. You can say this entire operation is a temporary inconvenience for a permanent improvement. The club will hold its annual rifle sight-in day on November 22. Earl Taylor will oversee the 9:00AM-3:00PM event. There is a $3.00 charge per rifle with proceeds going to local charities. The club will furnish the targets. You can print the flyer on the last page of the newsletter to pass along to your friends. The November and December membership meetings will be on the third Thursday because of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The November meeting will be the annual business meeting that includes the 2010 DUES NEWS It s never too early to start collecting dues for next year. Basic dues are the same. 2 2 SHORT SHOTS Continued from page 1 election of board directors, and the December meeting will be our annual Christmas Dinner for members and guests. As a side note, because of the Dinner Party, no new members will be accepted at the December meeting. The FOAC organization, Firearm Owners Against Crime, thanked us for the use of our facilities to conduct its fundraiser. Unfortunately, the weather played havoc with this mostly outdoor event and kept the attendance, and the proceeds, below expectations. Bob Atkison coordinated with the timber contractor on the property next to us. The contractor determined there were no decent trees on our property to meet his needs, so we did not sell any trees. The board subcommittee of Ell Vines, Earl Taylor, Dave Willard, Ron Watton, Bob Atkison, George Taylor, and Tom Kramer continue to negotiate with both Range Resources and Chesapeake Gas regarding a gas lease for our property. Last month George Dietz reported he needed a new assistant rifle coach at Mt. Lebanon High School. The situation has been resolved--george s fellow director Dave Willard is the new assistant coach. Dave has developed shooters through our Junior program. It looks like the Blue Devils organization will continue its award winning ways. We also noted Upper St, Clair High School rifle team had inquired about the use of our indoor range. We have been updated with the news that the school athletic director and the rifle coach are in discussion with the school board about the disposition of the school range. So, for the time being, the use of our range is not needed. Ted Hildabrand formed a committee of himself, Bob Atkison, Chuck Augenstein, and Ken Zupkow, to determine the winter snow plowing and equipment requirements. The next phase of work to ready the black powder facilities involves the electrical wiring followed by the enhanced communications system. Quotes are being solicited for rough cut lumber for the target backers Executive Range Officer, Bruce Ungar will get written instructions in place for consistent operation for the indoor ventilation system. He also notes the pulleys on the #10 position of the indoor range were repaired but are not yet working well. Chuck Augenstein reports we received a check from the NRA for $1470 for 22 ammo for the Junior program and have submitted a grant request for an additional $5000 for the program. Chuck will order more denim shirts and some more polo shirts. See the note below. CHRISTMAS SHOPPING Make it look like you planned ahead for once! Pick up official DMSC apparel tee shirts, polo shirts, long sleeve shirts, and camo caps. Gift Certificates are also available in varying amounts to be used for any of the shooting discipline fees throughout the year at a 10% holiday discount during November and December. See Chuck Augenstein at the next meeting or call him at

Lebanon entry in the Pittsburgh and Suburban League, the season started our with a whimper instead of a bang. In the first three matches, the team met its two fiercest competitors--murrysville and Frazier-Simplex-- and dropped both matches. Fortunately, they were able to sandwich in a win against Clymer to show a 1-2 record, which is not disastrous for our sharpshooters. As the ever-optimistic team captain, Dean Trew, observed, the team can now start its 15 match winning streak. Following are the scorecards for the first three matches. This won t be a regular feature, but is designed to familiarize the readers with the team members and to give a feel for what a few shots here and there can mean in the final outcome of the match. The entire team shoots for score and the top five scores count towards determining the winning team. VS. MURRYSVILLE Jason Piatt Amy Smith Matt Piatt Dean B. 7 7 NOTES FROM THE FIELD FISH AND BOAT COMMISSION We ve all read about the drawdown of North Park Lake for clean up, but another local lake is being drawn down and this time it s for safety. Lower Hereford Manor Lake, a popular 45-acre fishing and boating impoundment located in Franklin Township, Beaver County, will be drawn down approximately four feet. The PFBC says the dams at Upper and Lower Hereford Manor Lakes are characterized as high hazard dams, meaning in the unlikely event the structures should fail unexpectedly, there certainly would be loss of life. The drawdown itself will not begin until early December and will take approximately two weeks barring any unforeseen weather events. Anglers can continue to fish at the lake while the drawdown takes place. GAME COMMISSION The only remaining doe licenses are in areas around Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Locally, per the PGC website on November 11, WMA 2A has 3808 left from an initial allocation of 55,000 and WMA 2B has 2B remaining from an original supply of 68,000. TREE STAND SAFETY Many of you may hunt from tree stands during the upcoming deer rifle season. We may be preaching to the choir, but even experienced hunters tempt fate by taking unnecessary chances when using a tree stand. Here s are some points that appear in the State Bowhunting Certification course book. Tree stand and elevated platform hunting involves a degree of risk. Falls from tree stands can cause serious injury--even death. Hunting from elevated stands can be a safe, effective method for taking game when hunters use good judgment and follow these recommendations. Practice with your tree stand at ground level, gradually going higher. Know the proper procedure for securing a stand to a tree and how to use the stand properly. Practice using you stand while wearing your TMA approved Fall-Arrest System. A simple belt device can actually cause injuries by focusing the force of the fall on a relatively small area of the body. Beside injury to the liver, spleen, and lungs, the weight of a person suspended in a three inch belt has constricted the diaphragm, quickly asphyxiating the hunter. The FAS should include a full body harness, a lineman-style belt, and a tree-tethering system. Studies in North Carolina and Vermont stand bowhunters revealed 74% of the accidents occurred when climbing up or down and 80% of the hunters believed a fall wouldn t happen to them. Be careful up there! TEN COMMANDMENTS OF HUNTING You can go on the internet and look for the ten commandments of hunter safety. You ll get any number of variations. One site s ten commandments had 17 items listed. The following list was the most common. It will have done its job if it causes you to stop and think. 1. Treat every firearm with the same respect due a loaded firearm. 2. Control the direction of your firearm's muzzle. 3. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it. 4. Be sure the barrel and action are clear of obstructions. 5. Unload firearms when not in use. 6. Never point a firearm at anything you do not want to shoot. 7. Never climb a fence or tree, or jump a ditch or log, with a loaded firearm. 8. Never shoot a bullet at a flat, hard surface or water. 9. Store firearms and ammunition separately. 10. Avoid alcoholic beverages or other moodaltering drugs before or while shooting.

Also noteworthy was the red-hot M1A shooting of Ted Hildabrand with a 553-8x; even more noteworthy, Ted accomplished this quality score without having his usual coffee delivery. Welcome to the young new shooters who also were present; Curtis scored a 429-4x for his first time with an M1 Carbine Nice Shooting!
