4 The Cucharas Ranch is located on the north side of Hwy. 10 just east of Walsenburg, Colorado and adjacent to the Maria Reservoir in the open, rolling prairie and arroyos of the Colorado Front Range just at the eastern edge of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Mesas reaching up to 6,500 feet, the broken country yields not only hunting and aesthetic value but also winter protection for a year-round cattle operation. The flowing Cucharas River and wide open, grama short-grass prairieland are the significant features of this exceptional property. It is rare to find a hunting/recreational/working cattle ranch of this size with such good access and multiple uses. The Cucharas River meanders through the property and provides a unique feature to this Front Range ranch. This rolling prairie ranch is comprised of mostly grama grasses which provide excellent cattle grazing. Elevation on the ranch ranges from mesas at 6,036 feet to the river bottoms at 5,557 feet. Additional features found on the ranch include Sandy Creek, which at its confluence with the Cucharas River is the beginning of Cucharas Reservoir. Average maximum and minimum temperatures are 47.1 F and 21.1 F for January with 87.5 F and 56.9 F for July. The current owners pride themselves in their conservation efforts and as a result have won the Upper Huerfano County Conservationists of the Year award. A ranch will not be found that has more of the thoughtful and attentive management than the Cucharas Ranch has. Livestock production is the heart of this ranch lying in the shadows of the Spanish Peaks. This ranch is a year-round cattle grazing haven given the cover and weather breaks that the natural terrain provides. Cows average receiving fifty pounds of cake over the winter months.
