Writing Cntest Official Rules Abut the Writing Cntest As part f SNA s Natinal Schl Breakfast Week 2013, students will have the pprtunity write abut a special breakfast with the star f their chice. The 2013 cntest will ask students t answer tw questins (in less than 100 wrds each): 1. If yu culd enjy schl breakfast with anyne in the wrld, wh wuld it be and why? 2. What healthy schl breakfast fd wuld yu want t share with them and why? Three natinal winners will be featured in Schl Nutritin Magazine and will als receive special prize packs frm SNA. Please make sure yur read all the cntest rules belw carefully. Terms The Wh s Yur Schl Breakfast Star? Writing Cntest will be pen frm January 1, 2013 t March 31, Natinal entries are due t SNA s headquarters by March 31, Hw t Enter Sectin A: Runds f Judging There are tw stages f cmpetitin: 1) lcal cmpetitin and winners, 2) natinal cmpetitin and winners. There is n entry fee r ther cnsideratin t participate in the cntest. The starting pint fr all entries is entry int a lcal writing cntest as utlined belw. Winners f the lcal cntests in schls r districts can be entered int the natinal cntest as detailed belw, and at the sle discretin f the rganizing respnsible persn (as described belw) f that lcal cntest. Per the rules, SNA is nt respnsible fr lcal winners selected that are nt entered int the natinal cmpetitin fr any reasn, r fr entries that are fr any reasn nt received by SNA fr cnsideratin in the natinal cmpetitin. ROUND 1: LOCAL COMPETITION SNA members and schl fficials are encuraged t hld lcal Wh s Yur Schl Breakfast Star? Writing Cntests in their schl r district as a fun way t create excitement amng students abut schl breakfast and the Be a Star with Schl Breakfast campaign. SNA members and schl fficials shuld arrange fr all aspects f the lcal cmpetitin, including judging. Judging is encuraged by schl grade level t stimulate interest and excitement. 2 Specific instructins relating t Rund 1 - Lcal cntests Students in grades 1 thrugh 12 in participating schls must give cntest submissins t the lcally designated schl fdservice, schl nutritin r schl fficial per the lcal cntest rules in rder t be judged at the lcal level. T have a valid entry, students must d all f the fllwing: 1. Fill ut the tp prtin f the entry frm 2. Cmplete the student cntest assignment utlined belw in Sectin B. 3. Students must remember t limit their respnses t less than 100 wrds fr each questin. Entries must be riginal, nt plagiarized and nt evcative f any existing cmmercial characters s as nt t infringe any cpyrights r trademarks. ROUND 2: NATIONAL COMPETITION AND WINNERS SNA members and schl fficials can enter a maximum f 3 winning entries frm each lcal r schl cmpetitin, t be entered in the natinal cmpetitin and sent t SNA fr judging. Entries will be accepted at SNA frm January 1, 2013 March 31, Entries received after March 31, 2013 will nt be eligible. Entries can nly be accepted frm an SNA member r ther participating schl fficial. SNA cannt accept entries directly frm students. T be cnsidered a valid entry, students must fill ut the student cntest entry frm and cmplete the student cntest assignment as utlined belw in Sectin B. SNA members r schl fficials must fill ut the Wh s Yur Schl Breakfast Star? fficial entry frm. A panel f judges will review the entries and select three finalists. The judging panel will pick three finalists based n pre-established criteria (Sectin C). Winners will be chsen and their schl fficial will be ntified by April 30, The three natinal winners will be featured in Schl Nutritin Magazine and receive prize packs frm SNA. Specific Instructins relating t Rund 2 Natinal Cmpetitin As schls participate in and select winners f their lcal cntests, they may enter thse winners in the natinal cmpetitin, subject t meeting the fllwing requirements. A maximum f three (3) winning entries frm all entries received at each schl can be sent t the Schl Nutritin Assciatin (SNA) by an SNA member r ther designated schl fficial, fr natinal judging. Entries can nly be accepted frm an SNA member r ther participating schl fficial. SNA cannt accept entries directly frm students. N respnsibility is assumed by SNA, and entrants waive all claims fr lst, late, illegible r misdirected entries r fr any prblems with pstage, U.S. mail delivery r special delivery r technical malfunctin f any telephne netwrk r lines, 2 P a g e

3 cmputer equipment, sftware, failure f any internet service prvider r any cmbinatin theref including withut limitatin any damage t entrant s r any ther persn s design resulting frm participatin in this prmtin. What healthy schl breakfast fd wuld yu want t share with them and why? Students shuld cmplete in full the Wh s Yur Schl Breakfast Star? Writing Cntest by remembering that their written submissins are limited t less than 100 wrds fr each questin. Please nte: The Schl Nutritin Assciatin and ur partners respect yur student s privacy! We will nt share any persnal cntact infrmatin with anyne utside the staff f the Schl Nutritin Assciatin Wh s Yur Schl Breakfast Star? Writing Cntest. This infrmatin is fr ur cntact purpses nly, t help schl fficials ntify the winners. Rules The submissins must be their wn, unique inventin. Entries must be riginal, nt plagiarized and nt evcative f any existing cmmercial material s as nt t infringe any cpyrights r trademarks. The submissins must be neatly, legibly written r typed and pasted nt the student entry frm. 1 st grade students can dictate their answers t an adult and have it written fr them. Fr the entry t be valid, the student must cmplete the cntest entry frm in full and adhere t the 100-wrd limit fr each answer. All cntest entries shall be cnsidered the cpyrighted prperty f the Schl Nutritin Assciatin (SNA) and will nt be returned. Successful entries are subject t mdificatin by SNA including spelling, grammar, nutritinal accuracy and 3 P a g e

Sectin C: Methds and Criteria fr Judging Judging Criteria The methd and criteria fr judging at the Natinal level will be based n the fllwing criteria: Creativity and reasning why they chse their schl breakfast star Hw healthy their chsen schl breakfast is Cmpliance with the maximum wrd cunt Accuracy f grammar and spelling Judging Panel The judging panel may include: Schl Nutritin Directrs A Marketing expert at SNA An editrial staff member at Schl Nutritin Magazine Eligibility This cntest is pen t students in grades 1 thrugh 12 attending a schl in the United States and wh are residents f the United States. Entries can nly be submitted t SNA via an SNA member r ther participating schl fficial. SNA members and schl fficials must be prfessinals r emplyees emplyed by a schl district r schl nutritin peratin in the United States and must be ver the age f 18. SNA cannt accept entries directly frm students. This cntest is nt available in any state r lcal jurisdictin where prhibited r restricted by law. This cntest is nt pen t children f current SNA bard members, emplyees f SNA r immediate family members. By entering, participants withut limitatin, release and hld harmless SNA and its affiliates, licensees, franchisees, subsidiaries, advertising and prmtin agencies frm any and all liability fr any injuries, lss r damage f any kind in cnnectin with this cntest r acceptance and use f a prize wn. This cntest is VOID where prhibited. There is n purchase necessary t enter the cntest. All winners will be ntified thrugh their participating schl fficial as defined abve. Prizes If SNA is unable t cntact ptential winner(s) thrugh their schl fficial(s) r if any ptential winner fails t respnd t the ntificatin within 14 days f issuance f ntificatin r if any winner fails t cmply with any f the requirements, an alternate winner shall be selected. If, in SNA s pinin, there is any suspected r actual evidence f electrnic r nn-electrnic tampering with any prtin f the cntest, r if technical difficulties cmprmise the 4 P a g e
