1. What is the nature of your business? My nature of business is teaching martial arts and fitness, specialize in taekwondo. I have been in the taekwondo line for 25 years, and started teaching 21 years ago, although that was a young age to start. 2. When and why did you decide to become an entrepreneur? Do your parents have their own businesses too? Have they inspired you in one way or another? My passion for taekwondo is what keeps me going. I am not focused on making a lot of money. I decided to switch from my army career to taekwondo full-time during the period I was in the army. My parents have businesses too. No, in fact, my parents who are in the market industry, advised me against following them. 3. What are your reasons for choosing to do business in this particular industry? Passion. I quit my promising 12 year army job to come to taekwondo with a very low salary at the start. 4. How did you put together all the resources needed to start your business? Because of my EQ, and having a lot of friends all around. Everything is a kind of fated for me to move on, from one stage to next stage. During my army days, due to my taekwondo background, wherever I went I had a high promising area. When I went to army, at the very start of recruit, the people there already knew I was a national player for taekwondo. Thus, I was treated with a bit more respect because no one dared to touch me. Subsequently, when I became an instructor level, since people knew about my taekwondo background, I was asked to join the SASA team, which is the army s sports team. One year passed, and I become the coach for the team. I knew everybody, and knew how to grab the players from everywhere. The first year I became the coach, I manage to get the overall national main champion for that year. Two years later, we got it again, during my three to four years of coaching. Because of my background in taekwondo, I was pulled to the commando s force, to teach them army combat. I was a fitness instructor in army (PTI), now called fitness specialist. I was a 2 IC, within one to two years, I think two years later, I was promoted to chief fitness instructor to the commandos. For the post, I had to handle all the fitness and armed combat, as well as teach the commandos how to fight. At that time, because of my taekwondo, I was promoted almost every year. When I reached there as a first sergeant, I was promoted to staff sergeant, the following year I was promoted to master sergeant. The year after the following year, they wanted to promote me to a third warden, I rejected because I had to stay a year in army going for courses, which would have put my taekwondo on halt. I decided then that I wanted to move on to have an outside career, when I was 31.
5. What is your company vision and mission? How do you convey these to your company staff and team members? Spread the knowledge to youngsters. I want to make them catch the actual knowledge about taekwondo, and that is actually the main vision. If cannot convince them, confuse them. Have to convince them, and to educate them on the correct way of taekwondo life. It is very difficult. For most of them, to make them passionate about taekwondo is not easy. This applies to all types of levels primary school, secondary school, and poly, all of them have their own thinking. If you want to be passionate about taekwondo, spending the time in taekwondo is very difficult. 6. What made you so passionate about taekwondo? I think it is in the blood. What I mean by this is that, I have been interested in taekwondo since the age of 6, whenever I see taekwondo being practiced, see the way the students kicked, it amazed me very much. By the time I can really learn taekwondo, my parents felt that I had grown up already, I was 11 years old then. At that age, I started to learn, and the first year of my taekwondo, I was selected to go for the national demonstration team to take part in the NDP. The first month of taekwondo, and I had already joined NDP. Almost every weekend, we went for the rehearsal for those 9 months, then for the weekdays we spend 3 days on taekwondo because of demonstration requirements, we spent a lot of time. Those events fueled my passion for taekwondo. For the international demo team, I was always selected to go and represent Singapore, at least 4 times a year, due to my skill. My highest achievement is 3rd in commonwealth. 7. What are some of the challenges you faced when you first went into business? A lot of challenges. Like when you start as a fighter that time, the challenges I faced included how to improve myself, and how to convince my parents to allow me to attend taekwondo. By allowing myself to attend taekwondo, I mean going for it, 7 days a week, such that they cannot see me during the whole weekends. Why convince them? Well, my studies were not very good but, I still want to go for taekwondo. In order to go, I needed to sit at least a pass for my exams, in order to convince them. When I am older, once I had become an instructor. The next challenge was that I needed to learn how to convince my students, to teach my students, how to educate them to listen to my instructions. At that time, traditional way of teaching which was about 20 years ago was when we hit our students, when we knocked their head, scolded them, and all these things, they will very respectfully listen, and the such. However, in the past 10 years, the generation is changing, we cannot use the traditional way of teaching on the students anymore.
During the very olden time about 20 years ago unlike the current day, when we taught the students, there was no need to shout at them for not listening or not doing the proper way of poomsae or whatever. During the olden days, before the start of class, all the targets would be gathered together and thrown at the kid. Not to purposely aim them but, to at least hit. Similar to the way teachers in the olden days would throw the chalk/duster to the face of a kid. Nowadays, cannot use this type of method, need to convince them, talk to them. Maybe to you all, you might be thinking Huh. So violent, this type of instructor. but, in the olden time, it s the shortest way to make the students listen. But of course in for the current generation, won t use that method of teaching, as now we have been educate the 3 G way of teaching. What is the 3 G way of teaching? During the older days, while I was in army which I had spent 12 years in. In the year 2000, on the first day of having entered army, I was not in army uniform but, had already been punished with at least 360 pushups. In the SOP guideline by right the sergeant can only punish 20 push-ups within 30 minutes, if it cannot be achieved, then after that can punish another 30. Cannot be within 30 minutes, punish more than 20. Platoon sergeant officer level can punish about 30 push-ups, OC level 40 push-ups. By right this is the guideline but, guidelines meant to be seen only. In my opinion, if every soldier had followed the guideline, 20 push-up like that right, we would have effeminate soldiers already. To ask a soldier to do 20 push-ups, what does it train? It is the minimum of what a soldier should have. During my younger time while I was in army, I was able to do 40 over chin up in 1 minute with no kick. I could even carry a few bags worth 10 to 15 kilo, and do 12 chin ups with no problem. Although it was super torturing, the torture given to us by our sergeant but, I viewed it as toughening our soldiers. Without this type of mental and physical training, I would not have been able to pass my BMT smoothly since my height and size is considered small compared to my group mates. I was required to carry the types of bag and walk 24km route, march all these, run 21km marathon, carry the few bags 20kg or what cannot remember, overall 20kg, it is W rifle, which weighs heavier than the usual 4 kg it is 6kg, with bag and SOP, around 20kg need to carry that one to clear 5km, clearing obstacles SOC. Because of this brought up, it made me stronger. With this type of brought up, it made we understand that tough training is very important to students when I teach my students I train them very tough. Only tough training will make them stronger and they will survive. This is how they become champions. No pain, no gain?
No pain, no gain is one thing but, I hope the pain is the mental strength. Not because they get injured here and there. Every time my students are injured, that is why I, myself, go and seek professional training in Chinese sensei. I am also a Chinese sensei trained but, more towards the physiotherapy side, not administrating medicine. 8. What are some of your proudest business achievements to date? And why are they so important and meaningful to you? To a martial artists, it is getting a champion. For me, I got champion in kyorugi, we call it sparring, and poomsae. I think that it is very rare to get both champion in kyorugi and poomsae, as not many coaches can do it. But, I am one of them, so this is my own individual proudest achievement. During my younger days, whatever tournament I fought, most of them I was able to get a champion. So when I become an instructor now, I got a lot of students, and I train them the same thing. The one main reason for why I decided to quit/retire from being a fighter to become an instructor at a very young age of 20 over years is because I had a bike accident so I had to scrap this. I was almost in a bed for a whole year, cannot move here and there. I was struggling to stay on at that time but, I cannot really push on because of my back injuries. So I told myself Okay I got to retire. I am not doing this for myself, I know I got a family already. So I cannot push myself, such that I get myself injured badly that I cannot coordinate my jobs. I, myself, cannot get a champion already so I go and train 8 more champions. I achieved more than that. Since the start of my full-time business, I have trained my students, at least 30 champions on every national. Then the year 2013, we got the overall champions, before that was the men champion for my army, prior to starting up my own business outside. Usually we are the part of the top 10 clubs, always the top 5 or top 6. Then when started fulltime, the first year we got overall 2 nd which was far ahead from the first team. The first club, they already hold the title for 20 over years overall champions, and that was my mother club, where I used to come from, national demo team as well. Then after that, following the next year which was in the year 2013, by luck or by skill or by god s will or whatever, we all got the overall champions, which was very amazing. Before that the previous year, for example they got 50 gold, we got 30 gold. That is very far away from the overall champion. The next year, we got 5 gold or 3 gold more than them, I cannot remember the actual figure. But we were able to bring them down, from the 20 over year champions. That was my proudest achievement, I told myself do not be happy at this achievement. It is all by luck also. At that time it was their down period, a lot of their players were not fighting, at that time it was our peak period. So this on and off helped us also. I am happy that all my players believe in me. In NYP, we got a lot of title before. Small title such as obtaining best fighter for male and female before for my side. We got overall
champions for kyorugi, also known as sparring, we managed to bring down NTU. We brought them down. NTU is always the champion, for many many years, the champion at poonsae. They are very strong, and of course they older, they went through army before. Any guy that has gone through army is very different, and I believe they are the most intelligent in whole of Singapore. NTU, their taekwondo club is the biggest. My NYP, they always never fail to satisfy my training. Of course, as always, bad things happen in NYP and also other clubs, and my own clubs. Somehow or rather your journey will never be smooth. Also, I trained up my own SEA games player, who took part this year Evonne, who is also my club secretary. 9. What do you see for your business in the next 5 years, and does it include any plans for expansion? Personally, I feel that I m going very fast so I want to stabilize everything first, maybe give myself another 2 years. Actually, I already have 9 schools. I am currently teaching at 9 schools already 5 primary schools, 2 secondary school, 1 JC, and 1 poly and that is already too many for me. Due to my personal achievements, as well as high profile, this allowed me to get a lot of schools within these two years. A lot of them is actually by luck because it s fated that they come to me also. They look for me, and they say they want me to be their coach. I want to use this 2 years to stabilize first. After that when I can bring out more instructors then I will decide to expand my business. I m a person who believes that stabilizing one s business is better than expansion until I myself am lost. 10. In your opinion, what is a good and ethical business? How do you think this helps you in your company/business? I think in my company, I always believe in making sure everyone believes in the passion of martial arts and that ethics are very important. I always drive across my students that their attitude is important. If they don t have the correct attitude, they cannot go anywhere. Especially to my poly students because for my primary school right, it is very hard to teach them. As whatever I teach them, one word from their mummy is all it takes to change their attitude already. Well, kids are kids after all and every time when they reach primary 6, I am able to get them closer to me. Secondary school? Same thing happens but, they tend to be able to follow a bit better than primary school, and they understand some points also but, the bad thing is once they reached N or O levels, they stop. But the poly, most of them, actually follow me pretty much all the way. Of course, by the time they are year 3, they quit and all that. I always believe the best is always at the back one, they stay with me. Also, for the guys when they go to alumni, they go to army, and some of them come back to us but, it all depends on the individual.
11. How do you differentiate your business from your competitors? Please provide specific examples. I do not believe that I am the best fighter or the best coach in the Singapore or the world. I want to drive the correct attitude to the players. What do I mean by drive the correct attitude to my players? If they have the correct attitudes, they will learn the proper way, once they learn the proper way after they grow up, they become a senior or become an instructor or a black belt then when they teach the juniors also able to pass this correct attitude on, that s what my players at NYP are doing, currently. I think maybe I teach with passion, and drive across the correct ethics and attitude towards my people. With correct attitudes, in business right, the money will come in by itself. Not earning a lot of money but, at least this is money made from upholding ethics. 12. Where or who do you get your business ideas from? I think the business ideas I get are from history since I like to read a lot about history. A lot of those romance of three kingdoms, all the history of people of all the great people. I think I get all the idea, the inspiration from them. And not from anybody nowadays, because everybody works differently. I combine all the great things from the people that inspire me, I bring in and always talk to my students and ask them why you always think of this way for this thing? Why must you behave like that? If you think you behave like that you will achieve this thing? I always like to quote examples to them, and they find themselves thinking Oh, it is reasonable. Nowadays, I believe in the 3 G teaching, they want to listen to examples. They don t want to listen stuff like Oh you ask me to run, why must I run? I don t run, I punch him, I knock out can. Oh you need to run to get fit. Don t need to get fit, my hand strong can already. So I quote examples such as Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee to use when explaining to students. Also, Bruce Lee is my idol. I have always believed in his philosophy although I didn t learn his martial arts, his philosophy has inspired me a lot, in terms of values. So other than taekwondo will you one day learn Bruce Lee martial arts? I learn a lot of martial arts but, at the end of the day I come back to taekwondo, and there is a main reason why. I am a Krav Maga instructor as well. Krav Maga is an Israel hand to hand skill, it is not a martial arts. The aim of this skill is once you touch a person, you make sure the person is down with either a fractured arm, legs or death, it is a military skill which developed to be a civilian skill. I learnt karate, I once fought the karate commission before but, unfortunately because the rule is different, I was disqualified as my punches and kicks were too hard. Their belief is that it is a touch karate so it is a different type from what I had learnt. Followed by armed combat, in army. It is really all type of skills combined together to be used to
fight Judo, Wunchun, BJJ (Brazilian Jujitsu), JJS (Pure Jujitsu), these are all the styles that I can remember as I like to learn all types of martial arts. So you are a well rounder? I can say quite well rounded but, at the end of the day I go back to taekwondo because taekwondo really teaches a lot on values. Taekwondo is well established in Singapore. In SEA games there is only taekwondo, silat, judo but, taekwondo is really an amazing sport. What you see in taekwondo, everything in taekwondo you can see in all types of martial arts also. You got throws, you got locks, you got performance like doing a lot of kicking in the air, you got dance, and that is why taekwondo is never boring. 13. What are some business ideas you have implemented that created great results in your business? Well, I get one business idea from army organization. Follow instructions. A lot of things follow from army. A bit army style but, honestly speaking last time army style compared to now is very different. Last time, we followed the instructions from superiors, followed the instruction from rank hierarchy. But, nowadays it is no longer like that. During my time, before I left, I a lot of ideas came from my commandos force. In commando, they believed in earning your respect, not because of your rank then respect is given, that s why I brought this idea to my taekwondo. Earn respect that is what I educated my seniors and my black belts on as well. All my black belts under me, need to have fought in a tournament before they can take their black belt. Whereas a lot of clubs, do not need to fight in tournaments, just go for grading to get a black belt. Not say very difficult to get black belt as long as you follow protocol from Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) which can be done but, I want to drive across to my members that to not just get a paper black belt. Paper black belt means you just go for the grading, you know the pattern, follow the protocol, able to do a basic kick, able to fight the correct way then can get a black belt already. What I want them to understand more in depth is the fighting conditions. Experience the fighting conditions, get the exposure, get the confidence then you go for black belt. That is the idea that I drive across to my students. 14. In your opinion, what qualities does a person need in order to be successful in business? And why? I always believe in two things and these two things are constantly being driven across to me every day that is passion and attitude. I think I have been talking for these two things for the whole day as well. I believe these two. Why? For my club philosophy I always believe in three things: First, discipline; second fitness, and then third is the skill. Then after that it is three things they must have before they
embark on the taekwondo life they must build up their fitness, after that they must maintain their fitness or martial arts. Additionally, in martial arts getting injured is bound to happen. If a martial artists or sportsman does not get injured then something is wrong. Of course not to my extent. Mine is a motor accident. But thanks to my martial arts it helped kept me alive because the accident came so suddenly so by being able to react quickly enough, I was able to save my life. Lastly, is rehabilitation these three is always a belief in maintaining my students but before these three general philosophies, they must believe in discipline, fitness and skill. 15. Who or what motivates and inspires you? I like a lot of heroes. Mainly because I m Chinese educated so I believe in all the Chinese culture especially people like Huo Yuan Jia, who is a Chinese martial artists that brought all the Chinese martial artists together to be strong to fight against Japan, not in the war but bring the value of martial arts. Quite a lot of them, Bruce Lee is one of them, Wang Fei Hung is quite a true real life hero, very similar to Huo Yuan Jia, and romance of three kingdoms there is a lot of them. All of them got their own story for us to learn. Of course got bad, got good. Like people say that Guan Yu is a hero, yes he got his good point and bad point but, I will not say his bad points here. Everybody has got their own good and bad points to learn from, we do not learn blindly. Bruce Lee may be my idol but, he may have his own bad points as well. For example, until now nobody can figure out how he died but, one main reason is his body. People say he took drugs and over trained his body. At that time, perhaps the nutritionists are not as knowledgeable with a lot of people, so unable to follow correct knowledge of nutrition which caused him overloaded his body, so maybe that is his bad point. But his good points are, he has too many good points, as in values for martial arts. Actually without him I do not know what our martial arts world would have become. He not only spread Chinese wushu, he spread all types of martial arts, and taekwondo is one of them. If you want to ask about the history of taekwondo, actually taekwondo come from China, and China come from India. I thought taekwondo come from Japan? Taekwondo actually came from Korean. But, a lot of people do not know that all types of martial arts come from China and India. To understand more in detail, actually there is one person called Da Mo, a monk, he is from China but, he went to Indian to seek the enlightenment for Zen, Buddhism. On the way back and while he was studying Buddhism, he learnt martial arts from the animals. After having learnt from the animals, he brought the martial arts to China, then taught the monks all the martial arts from the animals. The martial arts which initially originated from animals, was moved on to allow the martial arts to develop in a lot of ways, more on the human style fighting then spread to countries like Japan and Korea. That is
how all the martial arts originated which a lot of people do not know. People are always proud, saying things like My karate come from Japan. My karate is the best. My taekwondo from Korea. but they do not know that it comes from the same place or they do not want to admit it. 16. What advice would you give young people who want to start their own business? No risk, no gain. You want to take the risk right? You must do your homework well but, some people do not need to do their homework, yet they were lucky, for example, the creator for Facebook. He did not intend to start Facebook at the beginning but, while he was studying in university, he found out that it worked, and stopped his studies to focus on it instead. Bill Gates, the same thing. It is the chance given to them. Nowadays the youngsters right? If you find that the chance is given to you, do not waste it, and do not run away. Take the chance and build to it. For me, when I was at the age of 31 I asked myself Do I want to go outside and start my new world? If I wait till 41, too late already. My army had offered me a 10 year contract, but after a year later, I rejected the contract, and I told myself that I wanted to start a new life. Do I have any regrets when I left the armed forces? I think I have no regrets. Although I had a great future in the army such as being given a promotion to be a third warden, and a pay of at least $4,000 plus. But, at least I live a happier life doing the thing I love. That is for me but to any young business person, who wants to start out right, they got to think about what they want. Passion or money? If money then, got to find correct trade to earn the fastest amount of cash in the shortest amount of time. For example, teaching taekwondo is all the blood sweat money. Every second we are teaching, we need to stand most of the time. If the instructor is sitting down and teaching right, something is wrong. Maybe sometimes like that teach, guide along, or during rest time, okay. But cannot always be sitting down, must be standing and doing the actions to show. Our job is always showing action to guide. You want a fast way to earn money? Sell property. Yes, you really need good chance, and good luck to come to you to be able to sell. Just by selling one property, you can earn at least 5 figures, some people even 6-7 figures. I saw on the news, that there was one lady, around years old, already a millionaire just by selling one property. I think it was a commercial property, just one building, she became a millionaire. This is a chance given to her, not many people are given this chance. Some people who have been in property for year may not ever be given this chance. If the chance is given to you, you must treasure it. If you lose you, that is it, too bad for you. That is my strong advice for nowadays youngsters. Actually, in Singapore right if you got two things, you will not die if you got brain, and you are hard-working, you will not die. Another X-factor is that you must have EQ. IQ
is not the most important, EQ is more important. Honestly speaking, a lot of IQ people work for people that have EQ. EQ people will not work for people that got IQ. If you do not believe me, you go and see one of the most famous persons Lee Jia Chen, he does not have a high education, only primary school level. Although he did not study until very high but, he has very high in EQ. Ma Yuan Long also, does not have very high IQ. No, wait...actually, he has very high IQ because he is a teacher but, if you realize, wherever place he go, he does not go far, he goes there for a short period of time then moves on to the next destination. That is because he got EQ, he knows that if he wants to get rich, he cannot stay in one place. He combined a lot of people, his friends, together there and work. That is why I can say great minds think alike. Combine all the people with great minds, and work together that is my advice to give to youngsters. Do not work alone, if you work alone you cannot go anywhere. Work with people, get their strengths, learn from people, and be more humble, then you will find that a lot of people will be willing to teach you as well as guide you along. However, if you are not humble, which unfortunately is the case for a lot of youngsters, they do not know what humility is. They are too arrogant and think that they are very good, with this sort of attitude, they will not go anywhere. Honestly, I cannot find any famous people with so much attitude that are any to go places. Mr Brian Peh Zen Academy
