Double Gold Success for Jess Newton at the National Championships The English Karate Federation National Championships turned out to be a total success story for Jessica Newton of the Shinken Dojo. Entering her two events, the +54kg Female Cadet and Open Weight categories, Jess was hoping for the double. Her own weight category being the Natioal s Success Mushindo Medals Grant Money News Table Officials Courses Wado UK Junior Comp Date Section first division she contested and Jess was soon into her stride and winning through the early rounds. Victory in the semi final secured her first final of the day, in which she dominated giving her the first of her two gold medal winning performances. The event now moved immediately into the cadet female open weight category, where Jess appeared to simply repeat her earlier performances to complete the double. This was an extremely good day s work for the Shinken Dojo teenager, who has now set her sights on the British Championships in Glasgow. Well done Jess!! The medals did not stop there however. Wado UK also secured three bronze medals at this prestigious event, thanks to Barry Meanwell and Joe Munro of the Woodford Dojo and Thomas Balaam-Reed of the Chikara Dojo. Barry Meanwell also entered two events, however following an injury to his hand in his weight category, he decided to pull out of the Open Weight division. In his Senior Male -84kg section, Barry was matched up against some of his teammates for the upcoming European Championships in Tenerife. This meant it was to be a stiff test ahead of the Tenerife trip, but as usual he was to fight hard and reap the rewards of his determination. He took England team member Daniel Hollister all the way in his final fight, but unfortunately lost his lead at the death. This meant he took a well deserved bronze medal home. 2 Independent Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Association United Kingdom April 2012 Joe Munro - Right Joe Munro was to secure his Bronze medal in the Cadet Male Open Weight category. This was a large group containing some very good competitors. Joe is never short of confidence and got down to the job in hand, removing his early opponents. He was to slip up however when he was matched against England Squad member Mitchell Priestly. Joe slipping behind on points as the time up buzzer sounded. He deserved his place on the podium however and will hopefully build on the success in the future. Joe did contest his own -63kg section and was doing well during the early rounds. in his quarter final he became complacent and took one penalty too many and was disqualified. A very frustrating outcome, especially when he was 7-0 up needing just one more point to go through. Thomas Balaam-Reed of the Chikara Dojo would finish the medal tally off for Wado UK. Thomas taking his bronze medal in the years +45kg boys section. Thomas is a strong boy for his age and no stranger to medal success. We would also like to mention our other competitors who represented their clubs and Wado UK admirably. Dean & Chris Fenton, Harry Oetegenn - Woodford Dojo. Joe Rose - Hull Zanshin Dojo. Teerth Dhesi and his younger sister Charan Joe Munand brother Amrit were at the Mushindo Kata Championships at the beginning of April. They were the only attendees from our clubs and went only with their parents. With no coaches present on this occasion to offer advice, it was extremely pleasing to see them come home with two medals. 3 Independent Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Association United Kingdom April Grant Award from the Co-Operative Membership Community Fund Wado UK were recently the beneficiary of a 720 grant from the Co-Operative membership Community Fund. The purpose of the grant is to increase the amount of Tatami mats we have for our competitions and courses. The grant body as their name suggests, assists with funding requirements for community groups such as ours. We submitted the application earlier in the year, and are thrilled to be able to report the tremendous outcome. We will be hoping to have the mats in time for our summer Paul Newby course, but definitely for our 4 th Wado UK East Yorkshire Open Karate Championships in October. This is an amazing award, and we are very grateful to the Co-Operative membership Community Fund. Oliver Dearing and Charlotte Pinder are seen above, holding a certificate from our funders

4 Independent Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Association United Kingdom April 2012 Table Officials Course On Thursday 31st May & Thursday 21st June we will be conducting further Table Officials Courses. They will once again take place at the Hull Zanshin Dojo between pm. These courses are aimed at those with previous experience by way of a refresher, but also those with no experience at all. We are always looking to help people develop their skills in this area, so if it s something you think you may be interested in please let us know. There is no commitment or charge for the courses so why not give it a go. The overall aim is to make sure we have enough people to man the tables on competitions we run, although some of our table officials also attend other competitions in this capacity. This year the competition will take place at the Woodford Sports Centre and as usual it is anticipated it will run from 10am to 4pm approximately. As the title suggests, the competition is for our ownjunior members only and will cover Kata, Kick-Master Kumite and Kumite disciplines. The entry form is now available to view on the Wado UK website and attached to the end of this newsletter. The day is run entirely using our own senior grades as officials and our own table officials. 6 Competition Guidelines This competition will be for junior competitors only, ages 15yrs and below. All competitors must have an up to date licence and belong to a member club of Wado UK. All judges and referees will be Wado UK senior grades. Please make sure you arrange to submit officials for the day on the form provided. Kata Compulsory Equipment Red and blue belts All Kata divisions will be contested, with both competitors on the area simultaneously. Three judges will be used,with the majority decision deciding the contest. Any Kata may be performed and repeated in categories KA1 - KA10 Any two alternating Kata must be used in categories KA11 - KA 15 Kumite Compulsory Equipment Red and blue mitts Red and blue belts Mouth guard Advisory Equipment Red and blue shin and foot guards White cotton shin and instep guards will be allowed General Rules Repechage to be used if time allows Kick-Master Kumite (10 Yrs & below), consists of each contestant attacking their strike pad as imaginatively and energetically as possible. Only red and blue belts are required for this event, although pads will be allowed. At the end of 30 seconds the judges will cast their votes as in the Kata divisions. Kumite matches will be 1.1/2 minutes with a panel decision deciding drawn bouts This competition is for individuals only (No team s) Closing Date Saturday 14th July 2012 This will allow us to process certificates for all those competing Entries after this date will incur a 5 per person levy and will not receive a certificate of participation!
