2 5 ANIMAL QIGONG Monkey Monkey Story Level I: Monkey Strolls Level II: Monkey Turns to Look at the Moon Level III: Monkey Picks Fruit Level IV: Monkey Serves Fruit The Monkey is related to the Wood Element and is connected with anger. The playfulness of the monkey can transform even the angriest people. In Level I, the Monkey decides to go for a stroll. After strolling for a while, he turns to look at the beautiful moon in Level II. Feeling hungry, he decides to pick some fruit and eat it in Level III - Monkey Picks Fruit. After filling his belly, he serves the fruit to his family in Level IV - Monkey Serves Fruit. It is important to try to have these feelings in each form. In Level III, you want to actually feel like you are picking fruit and eating it. Try to imagine the flavor. This will get your saliva flowing, which is considered the Golden Elixir in Qigong. By swallowing this Golden Elixir, you will gain all the benefits of the Golden Elixir (see section on Golden Elixir). In the last level, feel the satisfaction and happiness of serving fruit to your family. Balancing the Emotions of the 5 Elements The monkey is related to the wood element. Wood is related to the emotion of anger. The twisting in Level II of the Monkey gets a nice compression, followed by expansion of the sphere that the liver and spleen reside in. Not only do some of the movements of the Monkey target the liver, but the character and spirit too. The playfulness of the monkey relieves anger from the liver. Playfulness and cunning relieve anger from the liver. Who can be angry when they are playful? Someone who is cunning does not have to be angry; they focus their energy into intelligence - they will find a way. Be light like a child, and playful. 1 Five Animal Qigong
3 MONKEY LEVEL I 漫步猿 Man Bu Yuan Monkey Strolls Make sure the Yin Bai acupuncture point touches the ground. It also connects to the spleen meridian. All the weight is on one foot. Monkey Hand Instructions: Begin with Opening 3 Times. Body: All 4 fingers touch the thumb, which activates the acupuncture points in the fingertips. Two hands touch at the index fingers. Move the left foot, circling outwards and stepping forward. Then move the right foot, dragging it and circling that to bring it parallel with the left foot. Make sure to rest it on the acupuncture point on the right big toe. 2
4 At the same time, circle the arms, bringing them bent at a right angle in front of you with the right arm above the left arm. They are parallel to each other. The wrists are bent and the fingertips are facing downwards. Turn your neck to the left, blink and turn to the right shoulder and blink again. Next, turn to the center and blink. Breath: Natural breath As you step, breathe in as you turn your head to each side, slowly breathe out with a total of 3 exhalations Spirit: Looking everywhere as you go for a stroll. The spirit of the monkey is playful, cunning and dexterous. 3
5 Eyes: Blink the eyes 3 times. This lubricates and strengthens the eyes. Anatomical and Physiological Benefits: Fascia/Anatomy With the other animals, we have been moving forward and backwards. We now have this side to side movement while maintaining mobility in your upper body. This is dynamic, so the balance must be applied at the time of movement, adding the dimensions of side to side dynamic movement with stability. It is targeting the fascia in the neck, which has a connection all the way into the fascia of the eyes. This Monkey brings side-to-side balance as well as strengthening the inner and outer body fascial connections. It aids in a gentle opening of the side body fascia Chinese Medicine Relationship: Make sure the Yin Bai acupuncture point touches the ground. It also connects to the spleen meridian. It is good for the heart and eyes as it helps them relax. The playfulness of the Monkey form relieves heart fire. It also stretches and improves stiffness in the neck, and increases neck mobility. Meridians/Acupuncture Points Targeted: Yin Bai Point English Name: Hidden White Pinyin Name: Yin Bai Chinese Character: 隱白 Location: Acupuncture points in the fingertips. It is located on the wood point of the Spleen Meridian. Functions: 1. Calms the spirit and heart 2. Relaxes the chest 3. Revives consciousness 4. Good for cold feet and cold legs 4 Five Animal Qigong
