Athletes are to receive club endorsement and submit nominations to Ben Harvey at SLSWA by 5pm Friday 23 June Background The 2017 SLSA Interstate Pool Rescue Championships will be held in conjunction with the 2017 Australian Pool Rescue Championships at Oaklands Park, South Australia over the weekend of 4-6 August SLSWA is now calling for nominations from club athletes who wish to be considered for selection in the 2017 Western Suns Pool Rescue State Team. All nominees must comply with the SLSWA Selection Policy and sign the Nomination Form before submitting to SLSWA. SLSWA Support SLSWA will provide each selected member of the team with a $400 (inc GST) subsidy to assist with associated travel and accommodation costs. The selected athlete must travel to and compete in the Championships. The subsidy will be paid to the competitor s club at the conclusion of the championships and the club will be responsible for distributing these funds in accordance with individual club policy. Each selected member will receive a full uniform as detailed in the Competition Uniform section below. 2 SURF LIFE SAVING WESTERN AUSTRALIA ( SLSWA ) WESTERN SUNS POOL RESCUE STATE TEAM SELECTION POLICY Selection Philosophy The SLSA Pool Rescue Interstate Championships are being held at SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre, Oaklands Park SA on Friday 4-6 August The Western Suns Pool Rescue State Team will be selected with the primary objective of achieving the best outcome for Western Australia in all events at the SLSA Pool Rescue Interstate Championships. Team Composition a) Pool Rescue Interstate Championships Team The touring team composition will be based on the requirements of the Pool Rescue Interstate Championships. In accordance with SLSA requirements, the team will consist of the following: The Interstate Pool Rescue Championships is conducted for the ages U14 to Open. Each State team will consist of a maximum of 24 athletes as per the following: U14-2 males/2 females U15-2 males/2 females U17-2 males/2 females U19-2 males/2 females Open - 4 males/4 females Please note that an U13 competitor is not permitted to participate in the SLSA Pool Rescue Interstate Championships. Competitors must compete for their state for the whole of the Interstate Championships in their actual age category for individual events. Competitors cannot age up in individual events. However, participation in relay events shall be as per the 35th edition of the SLSA Surf Sports Manual and any subsequent Bulletins. Selection Criteria Athletes will be selected based upon a mix of subjective and objective selection criteria. This method allows the selectors to pick what, in their opinion, is the best possible team to represent and earn the highest points for Western Australia. Considerations for team selection will be based upon: a) To be eligible for the State Team a member must be in the appropriate age group on or before midnight 30 September 2016 and hold a proficient award relevant to their age group. b) Performance in the 2017 SLSWA Pool Rescue State Championships; c) Overall consistency of performance; d) Individual strengths that may contribute to the performance of the team as a whole; and e) Willingness and ability to fill a role that may enhance Western Australia s medal potential. Discretionary selection The Pool Rescue Team Selection Committee maintains the ability to make the discretionary selection of any particular athlete subject to the athlete meeting further conditions. Examples being: Achieving a particular result in a future race; Completing a fitness trial to the satisfaction of the team manager; or Any other condition that, in the opinion of the selection committee, is reasonable in the circumstances of the particular athlete. Announcement of the Western Suns Pool Rescue State Team The Western Suns Pool Rescue State Team will be announced on Wednesday 12 July 2017 via the SLSWA website and the SLSWA Facebook page. A team launch will be held on Saturday 15 July SLSWA Contribution SLSWA will provide each selected member of the team with a $400 (inc GST) subsidy to assist with travel and accommodation costs. Selected athletes will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation requirements in relation to their participation in the team, and they will be required to be present at SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre, Oaklands Park South Australia.

3 Pool Rescue Team Selection Committee The Pool Rescue Team Selection Committee will consist of the following position holders: 1. SLSWA Sport Development Officer 2. Western Suns Pool Rescue Team Manager 3. Western Suns Pool Rescue Assistant Team Manager Eligibility Criteria Only athletes qualified according to the terms of this section will be eligible for selection in the Western Suns Representative Teams. a) SLSWA general eligibility criteria: 1. Athletes must hold competitive rights within a SLSA registered club. 2. To be eligible for the Team, a member must be a minimum age of 13 years on or before midnight 30 September 2016 (i.e. Under 14 age group) and hold a proficient SLSA Surf Rescue Certificate, or for U17 and above competitors a proficient Bronze Medallion / Cert II in Public Safety and Aquatic Rescue. 3. For members that do not hold the Cert II, each club s education officers have access to an RPL process to become accredited. Athletes are reminded to check on their own qualifications and ensure eligibility prior to nominating for the team. b) SLSWA specific eligibility criteria: 1. Upon successful selection in the Western Suns Pool Rescue Interstate Team, complete and sign the SLSWA Athlete Agreement that will be sent after the team has been announced. 2. All members of the team must have completed the six, 20-minute Australian Sports Anti- Doping Authority (ASADA) online learning modules and forward their completed certificate to SLSWA with their 2017 Athlete Agreement, within 14 days of their selection. 3. At all times abide by SLSA s Code of Conduct and act in a manner that does not bring the sport of surf lifesaving or the SLSWA Western Suns Pool Rescue State Team into disrepute. Requirements after Selection During the period between the announcement of the relevant team and the date of departure, athletes must demonstrate that they are physically fit, performing well and likely to compete at a level appropriate to the Interstate Championships and uphold the standards as outlined with the Athlete Agreement. If a manager or athlete breaches the standards as outlined within the Manager or Athlete Agreement, they will face removal from the team. In this instance, the SLSWA Sports Development Officer shall have the power to replace that manager or athlete if necessary at his discretion. Appeals There is no right of appeal against non-selection of an athlete in the 2017 Western Suns Pool Rescue State Team. Power to amend SLSWA reserves the right to amend this policy at any time prior to the selection of the 2017 Western Suns Pool Rescue State Team. Amendment will occur only on the basis of extenuating circumstances. The amended policy will be distributed to all clubs at the time of any amendment.

4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STATE TEAM UNIFORM POLICY SURF LIFE SAVING WESTERN AUSTRALIA ( SLSWA ) STATE TEAM UNIFORM POLICY To provide a clear definition of the uniform requirements for all appointed State Team athletes attending the Interstate Championships. 1.1 COMPETITION UNIFORM The following uniform, as provided by SLSWA, must be worn by all appointed Western Suns Pool Rescue State Team athletes: Polo Shirt Towel Bag Jacket Hat Shorts Swimwear Pool Swim Cap Athletes must wear the uniform whenever the team is together during the course of the Championships (i.e. travelling, training sessions, competition and functions) SLSWA will provide the uniform free of charge for all athletes on their first year of selection. If reselected for future state teams, previous year s uniform will be reused providing branding and sponsorship is the same (i.e. the individual may not receive a new uniform if selected the following year) New polo shirts will be provided each year. If any team member s uniform size is no longer suitable or clothing becomes excessively worn, new uniforms may be requested. In the situation of lost or damaged uniforms, SLSWA will provide new clothing at cost price.
