1 2015 Best Karate Competition Team Training Competition karate takes your training and conditioning to the next level! This type of training is intense, demanding, eye-opening and rewarding for karate-ka of all ranks and ages. It does require a more serious commitment, beyond the hours and rigors of regular training. This packet will describe the types of competition events, dates and locations of events we know of at this time, mandatory and extra training opportunities available to you, and benefits and costs of training. Each karate-ka who wishes to be on the Triangle s Best Karate Competition Team in 2015 should review the Agreement with his/her family before committing, and save the dates Jan. 15 and 16 for team trials/try-outs. You are trying the team out, and the coaches are trying you out. Competition Events 1. Individual Kata 2. Individual Sanbon (3 point) Kumite 3. Individual Weapons (Long staff, sai, tonfa) 4. Team/Synchronized Kata of 3 people (black belt only) Team Kumite (individual matches on team of 3) (black belt ages 16 & up only) Mandatory Kata (black belt ages 16 & up only) Open Flag Kata (black belt ages 13 & up) Ippon Kumite Benefits of Team Training Better understanding of karate, competition rules, and techniques Improved ability to be coached Improved goal-setting Better speed, power, agility, endurance Excellent cardio conditioning Camaraderie with teammates, coaches, and Sensei Toughness, pride in competing, etiquette. Leadership skills 2015 Team Season Training: January 20 June 30 NC State Championship: March 14 Regional Championship, May 2 National Championship, June 30 July 4 Training Fees TRAINING: $150 fee by Jan. 30 OPTIONAL ELITE CLINIC: $20-40 per clinic Costs of Team Training Team Registration Fee (see above) Team jacket if you don t have one: $110 Safety gear / helmet and mitts: $160 Weapon (pick 1): $25 bo, $30 tonfa, $45 sai Competition fees (varies, $45-70) Lodging & travel (varies, depends on you) Time to be at the dojo and fundraisers Physical and emotional energy Time away from work, studies, family Time for traveling to training and competitions Training Times for 2015 Season 1
2 Team training will be split by experience level. Training time will be 3 hours over and beyond your regular karate training each week. Think of Team Training as polishing what you already know so you can perform it well. Regular Karate Class will allow you to learn new material to continue your karate journey (for belt tests, etc.) Elite Clinics are designed for competitors with 1+ years experience. Team athletes commitment: one hour in each K (Kata, Kumite, K-Conditioning) total of 3 extra hours a week. Weapons is optional. Weekly Team training schedule: Kata (1 hour mandatory) Kumite (1 hour mandatory) Karate Conditioning (1 hour mandatory) Kobudo (optional) Tues, 5:30 PM White and Green belts, and first time Thu, 5:30 PM White, Green and Brown Belts and Black Fri, 5:30 PM Ages 12 and below Fridays, 4:30 or Sundays, 3:00 competitors Belts ages <12 Tues, 6:30 PM Brown Belts and Black Belts (first hour) Thu, 6:30 PM Black Belts and Adults all Ranks Fri, 6:30 PM Ages 13 and up Tues, 7:30 PM Black Belts (second hour) Make-Up hour (50 minutes): Fridays at 4:30 PM or Saturdays at 8:45 AM 5 special clinics [1] Carolina Elite Sport Karate Camp, at Ormaza Family Karate, Dallas, NC Jan. 31, 11:00 AM 5:30 PM, $40 pre-registered at [2, 3, 4,5] TBK Elite Clinics at our Dojo, Pay as you go: $20 for TBK Team members, more for guests from other dojos, featuring Shihan Robinson on Advanced Skills. Feb. 14, March 7, April 11, May 16, 10:00-11:30 AM Required Uniform and Safety Gear for 2014 For team training, you ll need: On Kata nights: Gi and water bottle On Kumite nights: Gi, Safety Gear, and water bottle On Conditioning nights: T-shirt and shorts, and water bottle For Weapons class: Gi, Bo, Sai, Tonfa, or Kama appropriate for your height For competition, you ll need: AAU membership/insurance, which lasts until Aug. 31, AAU patch Solid white uniform with White, Green, Brown or Black Belt TKO jacket (about $110, $3 extra for embroidered name on left panel) The following Safety gear o Naugahyde Sparring Mitts in white o White vinyl helmet with face shield (only Macho or Mizuno); required for youth, optional for persons 19 yrs and older o Any color upper gum mouthpiece o Safety goggles for people who spar with glasses on o Groin cup for boys/men o (optional) chest guard for girls or boys, and (optional) shin protector for competitors under 19 years 2

4 AAU TEAM Code of Conduct 1. As a team member or contingent, I will conduct myself in a manner, which exemplifies good sportsmanship and correct attitude at all times. 2. I will refrain from profanity, offensive or negative remarks. 3. I will clean up my area whether it is in the dojo, car, bus, plane, hotel, practice area, or event venue. 4. I will treat the coaches, parents, athletes, officials, and chaperones with respect. 5. I will refrain from negative or derogatory comments about athletes, coaches & officials, and organizing committee. 6. I will wear clean and appropriate attire to practices and competition. 7. No drugs or smoking. 8. No male/female fraternization. (Unsupervised by adult) 9. I will adhere to the direction of the team coaches. 10. Regardless of the outcome of my event I will do my utmost to be positive, and strong for the team. 11. I will be on time for all meetings and events etc. I will obey all curfews, and attend all functions that are required of me. 12. Rooming decisions will be left up to the head coach. I will abide by the coaches decision like a mature athlete. 13. Athletes will not leave premises without an adult chaperone or the permission of a team coach. The coach must have knowledge of your whereabouts at all times. 14. I will avoid any activities, which may result in civil or criminal charges. 15. I will maintain a level of fitness and competitive readiness to the best of my ability for the competition. 16. I will wear the designated apparel assigned to me by the coach, and appropriate apparel at all times. The head coach reserves the right to disallow certain clothing for public wear if deemed inappropriate. I have read and understand the code of conduct. I accept this code of conduct and agree to abide by all the rules and procedures stated. I understand and accept the fact that if any rule is broken it may result in suspension or removal from the team or withdrawal from the competition. 4

6 Best Karate 2015 Team Training Agreement 1. I understand that participation in Team training is voluntary and that people not on the team may compete in tournaments as well. 2. As a member of the Team, I agree to train an additional 3 hours per week during the training season. 3. If I must miss a training session, I will use one of the Make-Up sessions during the same week or discuss another alternative with a Coach in advance of the absence. 4. I will give my best mental and physical effort at every training. I will demonstrate respect to all teammates (regardless of age and rank) and to coaches. I will display a strong will, positive attitude, and willingness to learn and improve. Crying and cursing will not be permitted and may result from dismissal from the practice and/or the team. 5. I will eat, hydrate, sleep, and rest properly as elite athletes should. 6. When the team travels to a competition or special event, each member and family should arrive by the designated time, warm up together, and plan to stay at the venue until the last competitor is finished. 7. I will abide by the AAU code of conduct (previous page) during all trainings, trips, and competitions. 8. If I decide to stop training with the team, the penalties include no refund of the team registration fee and no return to team training for this year. 9. If I am asked to leave any training session due to an infraction of the team rules, AAU code of conduct, or other behavior deemed disrespectful to karate or my teammates, I will be permitted to return only if all of the coaches agree to let me return. 10. My family will participate in at least 2 of the Team s fundraising activities by leading a fundraiser, staffing events, or selling items. My family will provide at least one volunteer at one hosted competition. I,, want to train with the Triangle s Best Karate competition team for the 2015 karate season.
