At Martial Arts for Life we teach traditional Korean Karate to everyone who wants to learn. We observe the traditional aspects of martial arts training in a noncontact, non-competitive environment. Students learn self-defence, build self-confidence and improve self-discipline. Personal development and self-improvement should be every student s goal. I have trained for 13 years with Master Tony Johnson, achieving 1st Dan in Tang Soo Do in Dedication, hard training & loyalty to my club meant that I achieved my Master Grade in In 2008 I helped Master Johnson to launch his unique style Kong Sudo, and I remain committed to furthering this art. My training with Master Johnson s Karate has included an introduction to Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Okinawan martial arts and taught me the importance of continual improvement and the constant pursuit of knowledge. Our classes are open to all and I intend to keep the best of our tradition while looking for ways to improve and adapt to modern times. We consistently update our teaching and training methods to bring you the very best in Martial Arts instruction. I have a team of instructors who train with me, and I recommend that students visit as many classes as possible to gain experience from all of our instructors and students. I hope that you enjoy your training with us and promise that my team of instructors and I will help you to achieve your goals and be the best that you can be. Pil Seung! Master Janet McKenna Chief Instructor, 5th Dan

4 Uniform The correct uniform is a white Do Bok with the Martial Arts for Life emblem printed on the back and the badge embroidered on the front left lapel. Dan grade uniforms are edged in navy blue, and have the same embroidered badge and emblem printing. (These uniforms are only available from instructors or via our website). We all wear a white uniform to signify equality. During warm summer months you may substitute your jacket with a Martial Arts for Life T-Shirt (this is not appropriate for gradings where full uniform must be worn). General training tips: Train regularly and consistently. Beginners should train once a week, above purple belt students should aim to train twice a week, and cho dan bo and above should aim to train a minimum of three times a week. These training recommendations generally ensure that students are ready to grade every 3 months up to 1st Dan. It is not essential that students grade every 3 months, however it is recommended to ensure progression and maintain motivation. Arrive early to class (10 15 mins) and use the time to practice & learn from other students. Leave your ego outside the Dojang and show courtesy to everyone. Always look for something positive in every class you attend. Remember there are no limits to what you can achieve and in the dojang everyone is equal. Take pleasure and pride in other student s achievements and help each other. The art of karate is a continuous quest for improvement of body, mind and spirit. The only opponent is yourself. Everyone gets bored with training from time to time, but a true martial artist never quits. Never misuse your knowledge, remember that martial artists only ever use their abilities for self-defence and never instigate violence. Help to promote your club, as it grows so will you.

5 Uhm-Yang and the Trigrams The symbols shown here are derived from ancient Chinese philosophy, and can help martial artists to understand the underlying meanings of the techniques and forms. Chinese philosophy holds that everything is inter-related & therefore each trigram represents various aspects of life. The 8 trigrams encircle the Taoist symbol for balance and harmony, the Uhm Yang and pair with each other to form the 64 hexagrams that make up the I Ching. Eight directions are represented, which can be seen in the techniques we practice in our forms and self defence techniques. Each of the trigrams represents a different attribute that should be applied when executing a technique in that direction. Trigram Name Attribute Image 1 Creative Energy Strength / Virtue Heaven 2 Receptive Energy Yielding / Vulnerability Earth 3 Revolutionary Energy Philosophical / Restful Mountain 4 Joyous Energy Graceful / Tranquillity Lake 5 High Energy Movement / Confrontation Thunder 6 Penetrating Energy Growth / Transformation Wind 7 Illuminating Energy Insight / Volatility Fire 8 Adaptive Energy Fluidity / Vitality Water

6 All grabbing techniques All three-step sparring techniques The student must take an active role in the promotion of their club. The student must take an active role in the promotion or administration of their club. Dojang Manners At Martial Arts for Life we are proud of our tradition of discipline and the excellent manners of our students. You are now a part of this custom and whenever you are representing your art you should remember the following courtesies: Ensure that you are respectful to your instructor at all times, using the term Sa Bom Nim (or Sir / Ma am if you can t remember the Korean word) to address them. When your instructor enters the room the class should come to attention and bow to them as a mark of respect. Be friendly, polite and helpful towards everybody, try to learn the names of the people you train with and use them! Be respectful to everyone regardless of age and grade and remember to defer to the senior grades. Don t use bad language. Ensure that your uniform is clean and pressed and that you have good personal hygiene. Do not wear jewellery in class and ensure that your finger and toenails are not sharp. Be loyal to your instructor. Attending regular classes with one instructor is the best way to train as you will build a relationship with that instructor so they will be able to monitor your progress. However, training with other instructors will broaden your knowledge and experience, so try to visit other classes and attend seminars and club events where possible. Never spread bad feeling, keep opinions to yourself. Always inform your instructor or Master McKenna directly of any unacceptable behaviour or if you wish to make a complaint.

7 REQUIREMENTS FOR BLACK STRIPE BELT CHO DAN BO Junior Syllabus Additional requirements for Senior Students The student must possess knowledge of all lower rank requirements, plus additional class responsibilities. Advanced hand and foot combinations and jump kick combinations. The student must have a black stripe for performing Bong Hyung Il Bu. Belt meaning: Cho Dan Bo represents total commitment. The student has become an accomplished Kong Sudo exponent, eager and willing to share their knowledge and experience with others. A minimum of 10 hours teaching assistance and class responsibilities are a requirement, together with the ability to conduct formal classes given the prior approval of Master Johnson. Perform Bong Hyung Il Bu and E Bu, also any of the previous forms may be requested. One-step sparring technique numbers 21 & 22 One-step sparring technique numbers Muk Yum Muk Yum is a Korean term which literally translated means Meditation. The practice is therefore often misconstrued by beginners who, due to western preconceptions, think of Buddhist monks sitting in the lotus position with special hand gestures. In our classes however, none of this applies. This is a time to reflect on your training. Here are a few tips to get you started. Sit cross legged, back straight and head up with your hands formed in loose fists and your wrists resting on your knees. This position is important as it helps you to remain alert and motionless. Close your eyes, breath in through your nose and out through your mouth, taking slow deep breaths which fill your lungs. Avoid thinking about the outside world. At the beginning of class think about how hard you are going to try in class and about what you intend to do well. At the end of class run through new techniques you ve learned in your mind and think about what you intend to practice and improve on before your next session.

8 Grabbing technique number 11 Grabbing technique number 12 The student must know what Sip Soo means, and the animal that it represents. The student must be able to briefly describe the heritage of Kong Sudo PROMOTION AND GRADINGS Initial Grading Criteria We require all of our students who apply for promotion to satisfy the following prerequisites: Have a current and valid club membership. Students should seek the approval of their instructor prior to applying to grade. We only recommend students who are properly prepared to take gradings which ensures our excellent pass rate. Know all of the requirements set out in the syllabus (set out in the latter part of this manual). General Information Expect to be nervous (this is natural). If you do not feel ready for the grading on the day (for whatever reason), then please do say so we can come to an alternative arrangement. There are no guaranteed passes. Candidates are judged on their performance and attitude on the day. Yellow belt tests are held monthly. Gup Gradings (Orange belt to Cho Dan Bo) are held quarterly. Dan gradings are held three times per year.

One-step sparring technique number 19 One-step sparring technique number 20 JUNIOR SYLLABUS The Junior Syllabus has been introduced for children under the age of 10. At Martial Arts for Life our aim is to encourage students to see their karate training as a way of life, and hope that the children learning with us will continue to enjoy training for many years. Regular gradings are a necessary motivator for adults and children alike, however expecting a small child to make the same progress as an adult is unreasonable. Children are therefore expected to learn a reduced syllabus, and are also judged on their own merits rather than compared to one another. The Junior Syllabus is based on the grading requirements which have always been taught in our clubs, but with reduced content for our younger members as they progress through the gup grades to 1 st Dan. On achieving 1 st Dan those children working through the Junior Syllabus will continue to meet 3 monthly targets to achieve levels 1 3 before taking 2 nd Dan, then levels 4 7 before taking 3 rd Dan. On reaching 3 rd Dan the Junior Syllabus will have brought those members in-line with the full syllabus. On achieving each of the levels 1-7 the junior student will be awarded coloured stars to sew on the navy stripe along the front of their Dan uniform. The seven stars have a special link with the founder of Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan; Grandmaster Hwang Kee, who was nicknamed star child by his mother, meaning that he was destined for great things. He also created a set of forms called the Chil Sung, meaning Seven Stars, the inspiration for which being his nickname and the seven stars in the Plough constellation. Although all under 10 s will automatically be taught according to the Junior Syllabus, any young members who are excelling at their art will not be held back, and may at the instructor s discretion be moved onto the full syllabus.
