3 Dear Karate-ka: 7 th Annual KIYOBUKAN INTERNATIONAL Summer Camp 2016 Welcome! This year, I have the honor and privilege of serving as your host for our 7 th Annual Kiyobukan International Summer Camp. It is with great pleasure that I welcome everyone attending this momentous event to Maryland. In the past several years I have watched the Kiyobukan family grow in strength and numbers. It is our hope that you will take advantage of the training we have planned for you and benefit from the opportunity afforded you to learn from the very best in our industry. If this is your first time at the Kiyobukan International Camp make sure you take the time to introduce yourself. This year s camp will be held at the Sheraton Town Center, Columbia, MD in the Terrace Ballroom. We have gained access to the Terrace Ballroom and the outside terrace for your enjoyment. There are lots of walking trails around the facility. Please take advantage of all Maryland has to offer. Columbia, Maryland is situated directly between Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC. This area also provides easy access to Philadelphia, PA. Please take note to the cutoff date to receive the special rates. 4 th ANNUAL ALL-KIYOBUKAN CHAMPIONSHIPS This has proven to be a very exciting highlight to our camps. Compete and be a part of the action! Cheer on your favorites and watch new champions emerge! Like last year, the first place winners will receive full tuition to next year s camp. The Championship will be open to only Kiyobukan members. Please refer to insert for details on the competition. CAMP PHILOSOPHY: If the training is easy, winning will be hard. If the training is hard, winning will be easy. We expect that every camper, at all ranks, will attend and train in every session. If there is an injury or situation that prevents a person from participating in specific activities please inform me prior to camp. 4 Seiei Nakaza Our Founder Seiei Nakaza was born in Okinawa, Japan in He began studying Shorin-Ryu in 1957 with Joen Nakazato. In 1960, he began studying Goju-Ryu with Seiko Higa. In 1966 he began studying Shorin-Ryu with Shugoro Nakazato. From , he served as Vice Director of Kochinda Dojo. In , he served as Vice Director Shorinkan Association. In 2004, he was promoted to 9 th Dan Hanshi by Shugoro Nakazato. In 2008, Nakaza Founded the Shorin-Ryu Kiyobukan Kyokai. In 2013, he was promoted to the rank of 10 th Dan by and elected official of Okinawan. Later in that year he passed away. Today this organization stands as testament and legacy to his strength and commitment to Shorin-Ryu. Kiyobukan Director, BRIAN HOBSON 1982, began studying karate with Hanshi Frank Hargrove (9 th Dan) Shorinkan Association. 2005, retired from competition with 20 National Championships in kumite, kata, long & short kobudo (AAU & USA Karate) , made 1 st ever AAU Jr. National Karate Team; AAU & USAKF adult teams, (sanctioned by the U.S. Olympic Committee). 2008, received Shihan (Instructor License) certification from Hanshi Seiei Nakaza. 1985, attained Shodan under Hargrove , serves as Kiyobukan Rijicho (North American Director). 1991, appointed Shihan-Dai (Chief Instructor), Hargrove dojo. 2009, promoted to Nanadan/Kyoshi (7 th degree Black belt) by 2001, won Gold medal at Okinawan Rengokai World Hanshi Nakaza. Championships-Kobudo. 2013, appointed as the So Honbu Cho (Main Association Director); and received promotion to 9 th Dan by Hanshi Nakaza. This was Seiei Nakaza last instruction for the organization.
