As a new region, we are proud to host this annual event, welcoming those throughout the whole western region of the United States and beyond. 4 Logistics Registration Deadlines In order to get the t-shirt orders in, we need to have your registration postmarked by Monday, February 22 nd. This is also the deadline date for early registration. T-Shirt and Early Registration : Monday, February 22 nd T-Shirts Please make orders for t-shirts by February 22 nd. We are only making a limited supply of shirts and there will not be many extra for sale. The first shirt is $25 and each additional that you buy is $20. Black Belt Grading All participants planning on grading for black belt must be pre-approved to grade. If you have any questions, please speak with your instructor for more information. Black Belt Grading will be closed to the public. Only participants and Dojo Instructors will be allowed. Please make sure that your grading application is filled out and turned in to Sensei Gene Villa at the below address prior to grading. Family Karate Center 313 E Sprague Avenue Spokane, WA Friendship Dinner The dinner Saturday night will be at the Longhorn BBQ at 7611 W Sunset Hwy #2, Spokane, WA starting at 6pm. We have the banquet room until 9pm. The $28 dinner gives you the choice between Chicken, Ham, Sausage or Vegan/Vegetarian meal. It also covers nonalcoholic drinks and the gratuity. 9 Biographies Sensei Gene Villa Sensei Gene Villa has 30 years experience teaching Karate at the Family Karate Center. Martial Arts is Sensei Gene s lifelong passion and career. He began his martial arts training in Judo at the age of 5 and was introduced to Karate at the age of 14. His commitment and deep understanding of Goju-Ryu Karate has been enhanced through the study of other martial arts such as Japanese Sword, Philippine Knife Arts, Thai Kickboxing, and Chinese Wushu. Sensei Gene teaches a majority of classes at Spokane Family Karate Center and leads a team of senior teaching black belts to assure the highest quality instruction. His lifelong training and demonstrated discipline was recognized in his 2010 promotion to the position of Chief Instructor of the IOGKF- USA by Morio Higaonna the master of Goju-Ryu Karate. In this capacity, Sensei Gene is responsible for maintaining the high level of technical capability of USA Black Belt Instructors, overseeing all USA black belt grading, and representing the USA and teaching at IOGKF Chief Instructor International Conferences. Sensei Mirko Buchwald Sensei Mirko Buchwald, 5th Degree Black Belt and chief instructor of the San Francisco Zanshin Martial Arts Center, has been studying Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate for over 25 years. Originally from England, Sensei Buchwald came to the United States in 1989 with a team from the U.K. to compete in the international Miyagi Chojun Festival karate tournament. (He placed first in men s advanced fighting) He decided to stay on after the tournament and take the unique opportunity to train with one of the greatest living karate masters, Goju Ryu world chief instructor Sensei Morio Higaonna. Since then Sensei Buchwald has made the U.S. his home, continuing to train directly under Higaonna Sensei. This has taken him not only to the Honbu Dojo (world headquarters), located in Okinawa, Japan and also on several occasions to Japan where he has trained privately with Higaonna Sensei as well as with legendary karate master Anichi Miyagi (Higaonna Sensei s direct teacher). In 1997 Sensei Buchwald moved to San Francisco. Soon after he discerned a need for a traditional dojo that gave students a solid foundation in the martial arts.

10 Ajarn Roy Harrington While stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Ubonrachathani, Thailand, Roy Harrington studied Lotus Style under Master and founder Precha Mahachanavong, a black belt of Sr. GM Tony Lasit. Lotus style is a kenpo/kajukenbo system, with Muay Thai and judo integrated into it. Currently Ajarn Roy is a Hachidan under SGM Tony Lasit. Ajarn Roy also studies under GM Bram Frank, Founder of CSSD/SC Modular Blade Concepts. He was awarded CSSD/SC certified instructor in He earned his Lakan rank in Hufana Traditional Arnis from Myrlino Hufana. In April 2014, Roy was evaluated and awarded Lakan apat (4 th degree) by GM Bram Frank. Instructing in both CSSD/SC and Modern Arnis led him instinctively to integrate Arnis into the Lotus system. Arnis has opened-doors and addresses many weakness in traditional martial arts. It provides a positive means to integrate weapons and effective concepts into my system.
