1 Qualification Purpose Statement: 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Judo (QCF) Regulation Qualification title Qualification No. Level Credit GLHs 1 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Judo (QCF) 600/4899/ Qualification details Operational start date 01/04/2012 Review date 30/09/2016 Registration Period 3 Years Overview Introduction This qualification is solely awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications as the recognised awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual in England and Northern Ireland and by Qualifications Wales in Wales. The technical content for this qualification has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Judo 2 as the technical agency for judo and sports coach UK (scuk) as the UK s technical agency for sports coaching. The qualification content is derived from the National Occupational Standards for Sports Coaching (2014) and the industry s agreed common content for coaching. It is relevant for learners who aspire to become a judo coach responsible for delivering coaching programmes to a group of participants over a sustained period of time, typically a over a competitive season or year. The qualification sits within a progressive suite of judo coaching qualifications. The qualification and its components are listed on the Register of Regulated Qualifications; component details are contained in the appendix to this specification. This qualification is equivalent to Level 4 on the European Qualifications Framework (EQF). Further information about the EQF can be found at: 1 Guided Learning Hours. GLHs for a specific qualification are defined as the number of hours of largely face-to-face tuition and assessment on-course; this includes all time spent on course-based learning and assessment activities. 2 The National Source Group for Judo is composed of the constituent governing bodies for judo in the UK (British Judo, Judo Scotland, Northern Ireland Judo Federation and Welsh Judo).

2 Objective Structure This qualification is designed to provide benefit to learners on the basis that it prepares them for employment as a lead, or head, judo coach. A level 3 judo coach is able to plan, deliver and evaluate a judo coaching programme independently, although they may work as part of a larger coaching team. In attending the qualification, learners are introduced to the practical and theoretical aspects of planning, delivering and evaluating a progressive judo coaching programme over a sustained period of time. This qualification consists of eleven mandatory units. Learners must successfully complete all eleven mandatory units to achieve the qualification. Unit title Accreditation no. 3 Training and assessment Progression Entry routes for learners Achievement of the qualification is normally through attendance on a course of training and assessment. The assessment specification requires learners to: complete a series of assessed tasks contained within their learner portfolio, provided by 1st4sport. produce and annual plan for a judo coaching programme for a minimum of two judo players plan, deliver and evaluate a detailed phase of the annual plan lasting a minimum of eight weeks, focusing on the two players identified for the annual plan demonstrate their ability to coach session(s) in two 20 minute (minimum) practical coaching assessments (either in their workplace or in a simulated environment). Sessions coached should be taken from their detailed phase of the coaching programme The learner portfolio and the practical demonstration are inclusive of all assessment criteria. Successful completion will result in the achievement of the qualification. Prior to registration learners are required to: be at least 21 years of age hold a minimum BJA Grade of 1st Dan or equivalent via the BJA technical grading assimilation process have a minimum of two years experience of regular judo coaching, evidenced via witness testimonies and coaching logs ideally hold the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Judo (QCF) or a BJA-recognised equivalent be able to communicate effectively in English 3 (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing). Important Notes: Due to the British Judo Association s aims and objectives this qualification will look to develop coaches that wish to develop players through the use of annual planning either to achieve progression of grading over an extended period of time and/or focusing on competition entry and achievement. Screening of learner applications before registration is strongly advised to ensure suitability for entry to the qualification. It is also strongly recommended that learners have appropriate insurance cover before undertaking any coaching practice. Those working with children will be required by an employer to have been positively vetted by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). 3 Learners must be able to understand the requirements of the qualification and the information within the qualification materials in English without assistance. Where there is demand, this qualification may also be available in Welsh or Irish.

4 Exit routes for learners: education The qualification will enable successful learners to progress to other industry-relevant qualifications in coaching sport, physical activity, activity leadership, supporting PE in school sport and sports development. Exit routes for learners: employment Market and Support This qualification leads to paid or voluntary roles in coaching the sport of judo in a variety of settings including working as a head coach within a judo club, in schools and in colleges. Other roles that the learner may consider exploring include Activity Leader, Sports Official or Sports Volunteer. Target Audience: Learners Target audience: centres Target Audience: employers Alternatives: The qualification is designed for those who wish to develop their judo coaching skills further in order to become a head or lead coach with responsibility for the ongoing development of players over a competitive season. The qualification builds on existing skills and knowledge within the sport of judo and can help learners secure employment within established judo clubs. This qualification is delivered through a licensed workforce exclusively managed by the governing body of sport. 1st4sport is happy to direct any organisation aspiring to deliver this qualification to the governing body of sport, where appropriate, to facilitate access for learners to the qualification. The qualification is designed to support employers in the sport, active leisure and physical activity sector; supporting development pathways of employees and volunteers. Qualified and competent employees and volunteers in this sector supports the professionalisation of the industry, ensures quality assured services and duty of care to stakeholders. The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Judo (QCF) may be more appropriate for less experienced coaches, or those who need to develop their confidence delivering activities through working with smaller groups before taking overall responsibility for a coaching group. Learners who do not hold the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Judo (QCF) will be required to complete this qualification prior to registering for the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Judo (QCF). 1st4sport Qualifications also award a number of alternative sport-specific qualifications in Coaching at Level 3. 5 Support The qualification is recognised as the industry standard level 3 qualification for judo coaches by the national governing bodies for judo in the UK, British Judo, Judo Scotland, the Northern Ireland Judo Federation and Welsh Judo. These four bodiesare also the home nation professional bodies for judo coaches, providing services and support to those who hold this and other coaching qualifications. The qualification is recognised as the industry standard level 3 qualification for coaches by sports coach UK, and it is mapped to their UKCC endorsement criteria. The support is focused on the benefits of the qualification for learners, the objective of the qualification and the predicted learner demand. This information was gathered through valid research and consultation with a range of stakeholders including British Judo, Judo Scotland, the Northern Ireland Judo Federation, Welsh Judo and sports coach UK.
