I have been an officer in the United States Air Force for over 6 years and I m the founder and head instructor of Hanscom Air Force Base Martial Arts Club. I earned my bachelor s degree in Computer Engineering from Auburn University and my master s in Computer Systems Management, Information Assurance from the University of Maryland, University College. 6 Intro In the last six months, I have had several conversations with people, martial artists and not, who challenged the effectiveness and practicality of Taekwondo as a fighting style. I have also come across written assertions echoing the opinion that Taekwondo is a fun activity primarily for children with little to offer adults looking for an effective way to prepare themselves for unarmed combat and self-defense. It s not to say that adults don t practice Taekwondo but the point was made that if you are looking for something useful on the street, applicable in a real world situation, or a system to show how tough you are in a competitive venue, that Taekwondo is lacking. As an adult teaching and training in Taekwondo, I have often said that I will train until I m 80 and beyond. I disagree vehemently with any assertion that it is not a practical or effective fighting art. I am always perplexed at how anyone can say that a martial art that trains its practitioners to knockout an opponent with a swift kick to the head, sometimes while jumping and spinning in the air is not a practical fighting style. Sure, that 1

7 particular technique may not be ideal in a situation outside of a ring fight governed by rules of a tournament, however, if a fighter is able to execute a jumping spinning kicking technique with that kind of accuracy and power against a trained opponent, consider the damage they could do if they stay on the ground and keep it simple on the street. There is far more to the martial art of Taekwondo than it is often given credit for. I took my first Taekwondo class as a sophomore in college, training for about three months and then took a break. (Not because I wanted to but because I didn t have a car and classes were all the way on the other side of the campus.) Three years later, I began again and I haven t stopped since. I am an adult and I will continue my martial arts practice as I train to refine the techniques I ve learned and discover new ones as I pursue my goals. With this book, I hope to encourage other adults who are thinking about beginning Taekwondo, or who are currently training in Taekwondo and are striving to do the same. 2

9 Chapter 1: What is Taekwondo? I saw the following definition on a website and it made me laugh: Taekwondo is An unusual martial art that relies on its followers to have the flexibility of a professional ballet dancer. No offense was intended as the site s topic is martial arts humor, but it s interesting that the extreme flexibility demonstrated by many Taekwondo practitioners is the subject of comment. More on that later. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art whose name translates to The way of the hand and foot. Tae means to strike with the feet. Kwon means to destroy with the hand Do means way. Past styles of Taekwondo were practiced for self-defense, unarmed combat, demonstration, and sport. Like many martial arts disciplines, Taekwondo has evolved since its early incarnations. A significant part of Korean culture, Taekwondo 4

10 came into the twentieth century as a viable fighting system that was and is practiced by people of all ages worldwide. (For a detailed history of Taekwondo, I recommend doing a search on the web.) Taekwondo is distinguished from other martial arts primarily by its dynamic long range kicking techniques. There are seven foundational kicks: Front Kick, Roundhouse, Side Kick, Back Kick, Hook Kick, Crescent Kick, and Axe Kick. These kicks represent the core techniques around which intermediate and advanced kicking techniques are derived. When executed with or without footwork, off the lead or rear leg, while jumping, spinning, or while jumping and spinning Taekwondo s style of kicking can be adapted to effectively attack an assortment of targets from the ground to well above head level. Knee strikes, while perhaps not immediately identifiable with Taekwondo, make an appearance in forms practice and are also incorporated the art s self-defense tactics. Taekwondo is not just about the feet and legs, however, and it is not the way of the hand and foot in name only. The 5
