Once again, Karate Canada is pleased to host some of Canada and of the world s most renown experts, who will lead various conferences and seminars, as well as high quality specific workshops. Sincerely, Dragan Kljenak Président TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL Amongst the many great sessions featured in this year s program, we are thrilled to announce that our National Team Head Coaches will lead a seminar and training sessions intended for provincial, national and international level kumite and kata athletes, while our Officials Committee Co-Chairs will lead a National Referee Clinic as well as hold officials evaluations and upgrades. Our NCCP Committee President, Mr. Gérard Lauzière, will lead a NCCP Comp-Dev training workshop. Furthermore, Mr. Steven Indig will lead the provincial and national staff and leaders / representatives through vital workshops on successful governance for not-for-profit sport organizations. We are also thrilled to announce that such distinguished speakers as Mrs. MarieClaude Asselin (SDRCC Executive Director), a Sport Canada expert as well as Representatives of the Toronto 2015 PanAm Games Organizing Committee will offer essential conferences and workshops on topics such as prevention and management of sports-related disputes, high performance management, and the upcoming 2015 Pan American Games. Finally, we will also be offering a Technical Seminar for all led by one of the most influential and respected figures of Canadian karate, Mr. Guy Brodeur, esteemed sensei and 7th dan in Shotokan karate. Karate Canada is therefore pleased to confirm that we will once again offer various useful workshops, as well as training and development sessions for athletes, instructors, leaders, volunteers, coaches, and officials alike, over the course of all three days. 2

3 1- THE PROGRAM 1.1- PRACTICAL SEMINARS AND TRAINING SESSIONS FOR ATHLETES A. ELITE COMPETITION KATA AND KUMITE TACTICS & TRAINING With National Team Kumite Head Coaches, Mrs. Nassim Varasteh and Mr. Denis Beaudoin, and with National Team Kata Head Coach, Mrs. Katarina Vadovicova : Karate Canada is proud to announce that our 3 National Team Head Coaches will share their wealth of knowledge with our provincial, national and international level kata and kumite athletes during the 2014 Summit. All three are equipped with valuable expertise, as both high level ex-athletes and seasoned coaches who have lead many athletes to excellent international results. Mrs. NASSIM VARASTEHREYHANIAN To this day, Mrs. Varasteh is the most successful Canadian karate athlete with 2 silver medals at the WKF World Karate Championships and no less than 6 gold medals at the Pan-American level. Since she has been dedicated mostly to coaching, Nassim has a strong record of success with many athletes who won medals at the Pan-American and international levels. National Team Head Coach specialized in kumite since 2013, Nassim has successfully provided leadership and support to our National Team on a number of occasions over the last years. Mr. DENIS BEAUDOIN National Team Head Coach specialized in kumite, Mr. Beaudoin has a rich history as an elite coach having trained athletes who medaled at the World level and at the Pan-American Games. Graduate who worked several years as a Physical Education teacher, Denis, who holds a 7th degree black belt from the Japan Shotokan Karate Federation, devotes his time exclusively to his coaching duties at his club (where he manages a recognized Sport-Études program), at the provincial level (Quebec Team Head Coach) as well as at the national and international levels. Mr. Beaudoin has himself once been a member of the National Team and took part in 2 WKF World Karate Championships. Mrs. KATARINA VADOVICOVA National Kata Team Head Coach, Katarina has a remarkable history as an exathlete who has medaled at the Paris Open in 2005, 2007, and 2008, finished 1st at the 2008 USA Open, and won the title at the 2006 Pan-American Championship. Mrs. Vadovicova now lends her valuable expertise to support the development of Canadian hopefuls and elites. She has been, over the last years, a provincial and national kata coach on number of occasions. 3

4 Over the course of the Summit, these 3 highly seasoned coaches will share with you valuable lessons learned during recent international competitions as well as the secrets to success of our Junior and Senior National Teams finest athletes. You will not want to miss this rare occasion to train under our National Team Head Coaches, and to benefit from high-level coaching while our Senior National Team Athletes will be making their final preparations for the 2014 Senior World Karate Championship. Specific and seperate training sessions will be offered to kata and kumite athletes. (Registered coaches are welcome to observe the sessions.) Kumite athletes : Saturday, October 18 from 9:00 to 11:30 for all athletes and from 13:00 to 15:00 Sunday, October 19 from 9:00 to 11:00 and from 14:30 to 15:30 for all athletes Saturday, October 18 from 15:00 to 17:00 exclusively for National Team athletes. Kata athletes : Friday, October 17 from 18:30 to 20:30 Saturday, October 18 from 9:00 to 11:30 and from 15:30 to 17:00 Sunday, October 19 from 11:00 to 12:30 for all athletes B. IMPROVING SWEEPING AND TAKEDOWN SKILLS FOR KUMITE COMPETITORS With Mr. PEDRO GUEDES (Judo Ontario Technical / Coaching Director) Mr. Guedes is one of Judo Canada s National Team Coaches, and is Judo Ontario s current Technical and Coaching Director. He holds an extensive background as an international competitor himself, having earned several medals on the World Cup circuit for Brazil. Mr. Guedes has worked with Karate Canada s Senior National Team at the 2013 and 2014 First National Training Camp (FNTC) as well as with the Junior National Team during the 2014 Junior National Training Camp, and his contribution at these events has been received with overwhelming enthusiasm by all participating athletes and coaches. Karate Canada s National Team Head Coaches strongly recommend participation in Mr. Guedes workshop to all provincial, national and international level Canadian athletes, as his insights, pointers and drills for improvement of 3-point scoring sweeps and takedowns should be extremely useful and beneficial to all kumite competitors. 5 1- THE PROGRAM 1.2- PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF SPORTS-RELATED DISPUTES WORKSHOPS FOR ADMINISTRATORS With Mrs. MARIE-CLAUDE ASSELIN, Executive director and chief Executive Officer, and Mrs. CYNTHIA COLAS LIVERNOIS, Education and Communication Coordinator, of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada The Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (SDRCC) is a not-for-profit organization funded by Sport Canada. One of the SDRCC s main goals is to create a culture of fairness within the Canadian sport system by reducing and preventing sports-related disputes. When the issues cannot be settled informally, the SDRCC offers professional out-of-court dispute resolution services to resolve sports-related conflicts outside the courtroom. Marie-Claude has considerable experience as a public speaker at both Canadian and international levels. She has also been an active participant in the Canadian sport system for over 35 years as an athlete, coach, official, and director. Cynthia is currently completing a Master s degree in Prevention and Dispute Resolution, and is also a fan of CrossFit. With their combined expertise, these two facilitators will lead interactive sessions using scenarios based on real SDRCC cases. 6 1- THE PROGRAM 1.3- GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT WORKSHOPS FOR SPORT ORGANIZATIONS With MR. STEVEN INDIG, of Sport Law and Strategy Group Mr. Indig is a lawyer and was formerly a certified sports agent. Steve has worked with over 400 national, provincial and local sport organizations providing consulting and legal services relating to governance, employment, contracts, policies, disputes, and privacy. In addition, he has acted as an adjudicator on issues relating to eligibility, conduct of athletes, coaches and membership. Steve has significant first-hand knowledge of sport from competitive swimming at the national level, coaching and refereeing, and he has been a frequent contributor and consultant for Karate Canada over the last few years. Mr. Indig will share some useful and vital insights on proper governance and management of sport governing bodies and organizations, taking into consideration the specific challenges faced by smaller PSOs and NSOs, as well as the latest legislative changes and challenges. 7 1- THE PROGRAM 1.4- NATIONAL REFEREE CLINIC With Mr. ZVONIMIR ZVONKO CELEBIJA and Mr. JAROSLAV YARO TARANA, Co-Chairs of Karate Canada s Officials Committee Mr. ZVONIMIR ZVONKO CELEBIJA, who holds a 7th Dan (IKA), is the President and Chief Instructor of Global Karate-Do Canada. Zvonko began practicing karate in 1972, and taught in his own Club for over 25 years. Many of his students have competed successfully and have won numerous medals at KAO, Karate Canada as well as Pan Am and WKF Championships. Mr. Celebija has been a licensed WKF Referee since He has been voted Referee of the Year by the KNA (Karate Canada) in 2000, and was also voted Referee of the Year by Karate Ontario in He has received a SYLAPS Award for contribution to sport development in Ontario from the Ministry of Health Promotion in Mr. Celebija currently holds WKF licenses in both kata and kumite. Besides being one of Karate Canada s two Officials Committee Co-Chairs and one of its most seasoned International Referees, Zvonko is presently also a member of the PKF Referee Council, and the Chief Referee for KAO, of which he has been a member since its very foundation. Mr.Celebija is major contributor to the education and licensing of our Canadian officials. His efforts over the last ten years have been instrumental in raising the level of KC/KAO officiating to the highest possible standard. Mr. JAROSLAV YARO TARANA, who is currently a 7th Dan holder, is also one of Canada s most experienced International Referees. Yaro holds a WKF Kumite Referee A license, as well as a Kata Judge A license. A constant world traveler, Mr. Tarana tirelessly seeks to perfect his skills as an International Referee while also further practicing his beloved art of karate-do himself. Yaro is currently the President of the Canada National Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Federation. He has just returned from Japan, where he served as a Referee at the 2014 Okinawa Open Karate 1 Championships. As Karate Canada s Officials Committee Co-Chair, Mr. Tarana has been generously and dedicatedly sharing his knowledge and expertise with his fellow Canadian Referees, so as to help raise the quality of officiating and to help ensure our officials meet the highest international standards. Both Mr. Celebija and Mr. Tarana will lead this National Officiating Clinic, where they will provide guidance on the proper implementation of the latest and current WKF competition rules. Please note that national evaluations and license upgrades will be offered as well during the course of this Clinic. 8 1- THE PROGRAM 1.5- TECHNICAL SEMINAR FOR ALL 40 Years of Karate: My Journey in The Way With SENSEI GUY BRODEUR 7 th dan with Karate Canada As part of the 50th anniversary of the foundation of Karate Canada, we are pleased to welcome sensei Guy Brodeur, one of the pillars of Canadian karate, at the 2014 Summit. Mr. Brodeur received his black belt in 1982 from O sensei Tsuruoka, founder of Karate Canada and father of Canadian karate. After many years in karate and great success as a competitor and coach at national and international levels, Mr. Brodeur, who was the first Canadian to receive a 7 th dan from the NKA (now Karate Canada), now devotes his time to the leadership of Shotokan Canada as well as to teaching the sport aspect of karate aligned with the traditional aspect of budo karate. Mr. Brodeur was one of the few karatekas to excel both in kata and kumite when he was competing in national and international level tournaments in kumite, in individual kata and in team kata. In 1990, he received the NKA Athlete of the Year Award for his performances in these two areas of competition. Mr. Brodeur strongly believes in the complementarity of these two streams of karate, and seeks to promote this integration in his teachings which is of great richness. During this seminar, sensei Brodeur will share some valuable insights related to his understanding of Shotokan karate acquired through years of learning and experimenting, namely under the guidance of the famous sensei Steve Ubl, himself a direct disciple of O Sensei Nishiyama, notable student of O Sensei Funakoshi (father of Shotokan karate). This seminar is intended for all brown and black belt practioners. Sunday, October 19 from 13:30 to 14:45 8

9 1- THE PROGRAM 1.6- COMP-DEV NCCP TRAINING COURSE FOR COACHES. With Mr. GÉRARD LAUZIÈRE, Senior Coaching Consultant, High Performance at the Coaching Association of Canada. NCCP SPORT SPECIFIC MODULES Karate Canada is proud to offer 2 very important sport-specific modules, which are required of all coaches seeking training and certification at the Competition Development (Comp Dev) level, within the National Coaching Certification Program. This level of coaching education and certification is particularly relevant to coaches working with athletes who compete on the provincial and national scene, and is currently the highest sport-specific NCCP coaching certification offered by Karate Canada. We wish to remind all members that being trained at the Comp Dev level (or certified at the Comp Intro level) will be a mandatory pre-requisite for any and all coaches acting as Provincial / Territorial Team Coaches at the upcoming Karate Canada National Championships, as of This therefore constitutes a great opportunity for all to further their coaching education and to progress towards Comp Dev certification. Here are the 2 (karate-specific) modules being offered at the Summit: ANALYZE TECHNICAL & TACTICAL PERFORMANCE The Analyze Technical & Tactical Performance module will allow you to: Analyze technical and tactical performance for factors that influence performance Analyze technical and tactical performance by observing and defining key performance factors that affect technical and tactical performance Analyze technical and tactical performance by applying the principles of motion to detect and correct key performance factors Identify strategies to monitor and evaluate technical and tactical performance Implement and assess the effectiveness of corrections Thursday, October 16 from 9:00 to 16:00 (w. break from 11:30 to 13:00) Friday, October 17 from 9:00 to 11:30 9

CREATE AND MANAGE AN EFFICIENT HIGH PERFORMANCE PROGRAM With Dr. PETER G. DAVIS Founder and Director of Sport Performance Management, a USA-based consulting business specializing in performance management, and consultant of Karate Canada s High Performance Committee A graduate from the University of Oregon and from the University of Minnesota (in the USA), Dr. Davis has been involved in the field of elite sport management for over 28 years. In the 80 s, he has worked for Nike with the best Track and Field athletes in the world and helped prepare Australian athletes for the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics after which he was recruited by the United States Olympic Committee to direct their Coaching and Sport Sciences Division. He has thus worked with the US Olympic teams for the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games, the 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games and the 2006 Torino Winter Olympic Games. Thereafter, Dr. Davis became the Director of Sport Sciences, Sports Medicine and Technology for Own The Podium in preparation for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. He also worked on various projects with both professional sports teams and non-olympic amateur sports teams of all ages and all levels. In addition to his specific expertise in the field of high performance and his international experience, Dr. Davis is also a well respected speaker and has delivered dozens of presentations, congresses, and conferences. During this lunch conference, Dr. Peter G. will share with Karate Canada s members and community some key governing lessons and principles for the optimal and efficient conduct of a high performance program to allow our elite athletes to achieve the highest summits of sporting excellence. While Canada and Toronto are getting ready to host the best Pan-American Games ever, to offer Canadian athletes unprecedented opportunities, and a unique visibility to Canadian sports, the Organizing Committee has generously accepted to offer Karate Canada members two separate conferences to best meet the distinct needs of our participants: The Direct Impact Of The Pan American Games On The Local Sport Dynamic And The Potential Benefits For All Involved Sport Organizations This conference is exclusively intended for dojo owners, club managers, and provincial and national officials, administrators and representatives, to give them an updated overview of the scope of these upcoming multisport Games and large scale celebration of sport excellence. Sunday, October 19 from 11:30 to 12:30 Promote The Pan American Games And Take Part In Them As An Athlete Or Simply As A Toronto-Area Resident This conference is exclusively intended for coaches and athletes, regardless of their rank or status, to determine how everyone can contribute directly or indirectly to the success of this unique event that celebrates both the sport excellence and the cultural diversity of the host-city. 12 Special Celebrations for the 2015 Pan Am Games Taking place in the 2015 Pan Am Games host city, and less than a year from the start of these Games, this edition of Karate Canada s Annual Summit will have a particular flavour, with several special activities held on the afternoon of Saturday, October 18th. These activities will seek to promote karate and to highlight the participation of our National Team at these multisport Games, as well as all aspects of the event itself. The general public, media and entire karate community of Greater Toronto and Ontario are warmly invited to the following events: From 13:00 to 15:00 (training room) : Senior National Team Demonstration and meeting with local and national media From 13:30 to 14:30 (lobby): Meeting with Pachi, the official 2015 PanAmerican and ParaPanAmerican Games mascot From 13:30 to 15:30 (parking lot): Presence of the TO2015 Community Tour, with its Games information tent, inflatable interactive sport activities, possible athlete appearances, sport equipment showcasing athletic records, interactive photo cut-outs, and swag! 14 3- RESERVATION PROCESS It is strongly recommended for all Summit attendees to pre-register online by October 4, thus saving on the cost of registration fees. Online pre-registration will remain open until October 12, but all participants who register after October 4 will need to pay higher registration fees (see chart below). Please note that online pre-registration will be mandatory for all participants in the NCCP Training Course. Online pre-registration is available at and will remain open until October 12 th. All Summit attendees who pre-register online by October 4 th, will be entitled to a discount on the cost of registration fees. Participants who register between October 4 th and 12 th will need to pay the regular registration fees. Please note: Participants must also register in person at the event (ID Pick Up). On site registration will take place at the Toronto Airport Sheraton Centre, at the following times: Friday, October 17: from 16:30 to 18:00 Saturday, October 18: from 8:00 to 9:00 Sunday, October 19: from 8:00 to 9:00 IMPORTANT : On site registration for participants who did not previously pre-register online will be subject to availability, and Karate Canada may not guarantee access to the event for everyone. No cash, cheque or money order payment will be accepted for payment of all online pre-registrations. Additionally, please note that no refund of registration fees will be issued for cancellation after October 12, under any circumstances.
