Followed by Youth Weapons, & Adult Chanbara. Equipment: Traditional uniforms for forms, sparring, weapons, & koshiki (must cover elbows) Foam Safety equipment (head, hands, feet) is required for all Sparring divisions. All Sparring, Chanbara, TDS, and Koshiki divisions require mouthpieces for all competitors, and Groin protection for all male competitors. TDS competitors must wear approved caged headgear, open hand gloves, and shin guards. 3 Annual Seminars Sunday, October 13, 2013 Location: Jim Hawkes Karate 405 Montano NE #5, Albuquerque, NM Adrian Galvan Sparring (Point Sparring) 9:00 10:30 am Training techniques to increase speed, reaction time, and improve your timing. Adrian Galvan is a 5 th Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and Shorei Goju. Adrian Galvan trains under his father, Juan Galvan. Together, they run Master Juan s Karate in The Colony, Texas. He has an unprecedented record of sparring titles: 7-time PKC Internationals Grand Champion, 6-time USKA World Grand Champion, and 5-time USKA National Grand Champion as well as the 2013 Ozawa Cup Grand Champion. Mr. Galvan s timing, accuracy, and control is impeccable. He has a regimented workout routine for himself as well as his team, and it works! Learn some of his effective sparring drills and apply them to improve your point sparring as well as your fighting in the dojo. Eli Guzman Take Down Sparring (TDS) 10:30 12:00 Noon Successful TDS strategies to use in the ring. Eli Guzman is a 6 th Degree Black Belt in Kenpo Karate. He is also skilled in Jiu Jitsu and trained as a bodyguard, and was a varsity wrestler. He runs Guzman Sport Karate & Kickboxing in Las Cruces, New Mexico. His school has been voted the Best Martial Arts School in Las Cruces many times and is the largest school in the city. Mr. Guzman is our Take Down Sparring Stylehead and formed TDS to allow competitors to compete in an event that encompasses everything from sparring to grappling to Jiu Jitsu, but in a safer environment than the MMA. It really allows the well-rounded competitor to shine. Tim VanDenover Kombat Kenjutsu (Chanbara) 12:30 2:00 pm Proper handling of the Chanbara sword and effecting blocking sets. Tim VanDenover is an 8 th Degree Black Belt in Shorin Ryu under James H. Hawkes. He is trained in Chanbara, and has competed at the World Sports Chanbara Championships in Yokohama, Japan. He runs Rising Sun Karate in Scottsdale, Arizona. Mr. VanDenover is our Kombat Kenjutsu Stylehead. He is helping to keep the Samurai spirit alive through the practice of Kombat Kenjutsu, the new era of weapons and sword play. This is a safe way to fight with swords and other weapons as the equipment is specially padded to allow practitioners to perfect their techniques at full-speed, 100% of their strength, power and capability without the risk of injury.

Notes: Some divisions may be divided further if there are enough competitors. Beginners: 1 st Three Belts For Example, in some styles White, Orange, & Yellow Belts. Adult Kyus: Competitor 18 years or older and under the rank of Black Belt. Point Sparring: 5 points for adult Black Belts, 3 points for children & adult kyus. 2 minutes fighting time. Light (touch) face contact Adult Brown & Black Belts (No rocking of the head). No face contact for Youth, Novice Adults, or Colored Belt Adults. Target areas are: Head (excluding the top of the head), Face (adult brown belts and black belts only may lightly touch the face; youth competitors and adults under brown belt may score to the face, provided there is NO contact), neck (except throat area and back of neck), Chest, Abdomen, Back (excluding shoulders and spine), and Groin. Kombat Kenjutsu: Kombat Kenjutsu competition involves combat with weapons made of the new piston-flex plastic with cushioned padding covering the striking surface. The Kombat Kenjutsu matches at this event will be with the sword (provided). The first competitor to reach three points shall be declared the winner. Target areas are: All main parts of the body, Head, Torso, Legs, and Arms. Koshiki: Required gear: Headgear and Chest Protector will be provided. A competitor may score with hands, feet, elbows (except to the head), or knees. Two points will be awarded for a properly executed, scoring kick to the head. All other properly executed, scoring techniques will be awarded one point. At the end of two minutes, whichever competitor has the most points wins. Take Down Sparring: Required gear: Caged head guard, open hand gloves, shin guards, groin cup (males) and mouthpiece. There will be one 2 minute round. You will be judged on striking, take down and grappling. Punching, kicking and leg kicks are allowed. No groin shots and no elbows or knees. Referee may stop the fight if submission is locked in or by unanswered punches or by tap out. Referee decision must be accepted and respected for the safety of the competitor.
