Introducton Congratulatons, when buyng a RITCHEY part, you made a superb choce. RITCHEY develops, tests and manufactures our products wth dedcaton to uphold the hghest standards of qualty. Lke all hgh-qualty sports equpment, RITCHEY components requre careful nstallaton n order to functon properly and provde long-term dependablty. We recommend that you ask a qualfed mechanc at your local authorzed RITCHEY retal shop for help wth nstallaton and use RITCHEY parts together whenever possble n order to acheve the optmum performance and durablty. Our precse tolerances are ntended to ensure component compatblty, and are carefully montored durng producton and qualty control so that nstallaton wll be easy and trouble-free. Ths manual contans mportant notes about use, care, mantenance and mountng. Please read ths manual carefully, begnnng wth the general nformaton, followed by the chapter referrng to the component you purchased, or you ntend to use. Dong so wll ensure smooth nstallaton and trouble-free use of the product. Keep ths user manual for your records and future reference. If you sell or lend your component or bke to someone, share ths manual wth the new user. Wth RITCHEY components, as wth all lghtweght bcycle products, specal care and attenton need to be pad to proper nstallaton and ntended use. Materals used by RITCHEY are extremely strong and durable, wth very low weght. However, sometmes they can break, rather than bend, n the event of an accdent. Internal damage to the component may not show up obvously or wth vsble sgns of damage. In the event of undue stress of any knd, e.g. as a result of a crash, the components need to be nspected by a qualfed mechanc to ensure the product s safe to contnue usng. Therefore consult your RITCHEY dealer after any such occurrence. Before your frst rde Determned use RITCHEY wheels, quck-releases, tres, tubes, rm tape and brake pads are desgned for use on road and trathlon (.e. tme tral), cyclocross and mountan bkes and ther typcal use. They are, however, not bult for freerdng, dual slalom, downhll, jumps and comparable uses. For more nformaton, see the specfcatons n our catalogue and/or vst our webste at Never modfy the wheels, the rm tape or the brake pads. Do not fle or drll any holes n the components, especally n parts made of carbon, as ths would damage ther structural ntegrty and vod your warranty. We recommend to always use RITCHEY parts together n order to acheve optmal performance and component durablty. If you ntend to combne RITCHEY parts wth parts from other manufacturers, make sure they are compatble,.e., that all dmensons are exactly the same accordng to the specfcatons gven n ths manual. Wheels, tres, etc. are desgned for an overall load of 110 klos (242 lbs) ncludng rder and baggage, e.g. rucksack. If you have any questons, please contact your local RITCHEY dealer. After a crash, accdent or other major mpact, have your RITCHEY wheels, tres, etc. checked by your RITCHEY dealer for your own safety. If one of your wheels or quck-releases gves any creakng or crackng noses or shows any outward damage, such as notches, cracks, dents, dscoloratons, etc. do not use your bke anymore untl you have consulted your local RITCHEY dealer who wll check the part thoroughly and replace t f necessary. Before every rde Check the followng ponts before settng off: 1. Are the quck-release levers or nuts of the front and rear wheel properly closed? For more nformaton, see sectons How to use the quck-releases and Mountng the wheels. Improperly closed quck-releases can cause the wheels to come loose. Ths can lead to a serous accdent 2. Are the tres n good condton and do they have suffcent pressure? Do at least a thumb test by pushng your thumb down on the tre. The tre should only yeld a lttle. For more nformaton, see secton The tre equpment tres, tubes and rm tape. 3. Spn the wheels to check whether the rms are true. Watch the clearance between brake pad and rm, or, n the case of dsc brakes, between rm and frame or fork. Out of round rms can be an ndcaton of cracked tres, broken axles or a damaged rm. As you look over the bke at the brake / wheel area f the clearance on the rght sde dffers from that on the left sde, the wheel or the brake has come out of ts centred poston. 4. Test the brakes whle standng by frmly pullng the brake levers towards the handlebars. The brake pads of rm brakes must ht the rm sdes wth ther entre surface. They must not touch the tres. You should not be able to pull the lever all the way to the handlebars Wth dsc brakes you should have a stable pressure pont at the lever. Ol or brake flud must not leak out onto the rotor or stoppng power wll be reduced and cause unsafe breakng performance. For more nformaton, see your general bke manual. Please note that the brakng effect and the road grp of your bke are both greatly reduced n wet condtons. Be partcularly cautous and do not rde as fast as under dry condtons. Brakng on fast and steep descents can cause your wheels to heat up, possbly damagng the tres, tubes and rms. In the worst case ths can result n a sudden loss of ar and thus n a serous accdent. Let your brakes cool off from tme to tme. Ths symbol warns you about actons that could lead to damage of property or the envronment. Ths symbol ndcates there s specal nformaton on how to handle the product and may refer you to a specfc passage n ths manual requrng your specal attenton. The possble consequences descrbed above are not repeated every tme one of the symbols appears open close 1 2

Specal characterstcs of carbon In the case of RITCHEY products made of carbon fbre-renforced resn, also referred to as carbon or abbrevated CFRP, specal care and attenton s requred. Carbon s an extremely strong materal whch combnes hgh compresson resstance wth low weght. Please note that carbon, unlke metals, shows no vsble deformaton after overstress even though some of ts fbres may be damaged. Ths makes t very dangerous to contnue usng a carbon part after an mpact or undue stress, as t may fal wthout prevous warnng thereby causng an accdent wth unforeseeable consequences. If your RITCHEY carbon part sustaned ths knd of mpact or undue stress, we strongly recommend that you take your complete bke to a local RITCHEY dealer for nspecton. He wll check the damaged bke and, f necessary, replace the defcent part. In case there are any unanswered questons or doubts, the dealer can contact RITCHEY or one of our dstrbutors drectly. For safety reasons RITCHEY components made of carbon must never be repared; they must be replaced at once. Prevent further use by takng approprate measures,.e. destroyng t. Parts made of carbon must under no crcumstances be exposed to excessve heat. Therefore, never have a carbon component enamelled or powder-coated. The temperatures requred for dong so could destroy t. Do not leave carbon fbre parts near a source of heat or n a closed car or trunk durng hot weather. If any notches, tears, deformatons, dents or dscoloratons etc. are vsble on your carbon part or f t makes any creakng or crackng noses, do not use the bke untl the part has been replaced After undue stress, a crash or other major mpact, replace the part or have t nspected by your local RITCHEY dealer before usng t agan. Please note that rms wth carbon brakng surfaces, e.g. WCS carbon tubular wheel sets, need specal brake pads. RITCHEY recommends Swsstop Yellow Kng. Cleanng and care Clean your tres and wheels wth water and a soft cloth at regular ntervals. If necessary, use a non abrasve soap to remove grme. You may add a lttle detergent lqud for cleanng and removng tough stans, such as ol or grease, from hard surfaces. Do not use degreasng agents, whch contan organc solvents (e.g. acetone, trchloroethylene, methylene, etc.). Chemcals of ths sort may damage the fnsh or substructure of the materal. After your bke has dred, apply a wax based polsh to panted, carbon and metal surfaces (excepton: brakng surfaces). Polsh the parts after the wax has dred. Wth ths treatment your wheels wll keep ther nce appearance for years. Whle cleanng, look for cracks, scratches, dents, as well as bent or dscoloured materal. If you thnk there may be a problem, see your local RITCHEY dealer. Have damaged or defectve components replaced mmedately. Make absolutely sure to keep the brakng surfaces free of any cleanng agent, grease or ol. Otherwse the brakng performance mght be drastcally reduced or even rendered neffectve. Be sure to never store the wheels and tres n the blazng sun or near sources of heat. When storng your bke for the wnter perod, make sure the tres have enough pressure. Check the tre pressure at regular ntervals and follow the recommendatons of RITCHEY. Do not use any aggressve agents, such as benzne, thnners, etc. when cleanng your wheels and tres. Mantenance Check the true runnng of the rms, the bolts of the sprocket assembles and the play of the bearngs after the frst klometres ( mles) and true the wheels and/or adjust the bearngs for play, f necessary. Check at least every 2,000 klometres (1,242 mles) thereafter. Please note that trung wheels and adjustng bearngs are jobs best left to sklled mechancs. Ask your RITCHEY dealer to do these routnes. After about three years the tres and tubes have aged to an extent that they need to be checked thoroughly and have to be replaced, f necessary, as, at ths stage, they usually have reached the end of ther lfe span. Contact your local RITCHEY dealer. If your bke s equpped wth rm brakes, have the thckness of the rm sdes measured after you are through the second set of brake pads at the latest. If the thckness s found to be less than 1 mm, have the rms replaced The hubs rotate on hermetcally sealed, replaceable ndustral bearngs. Replacng the bearngs requres some experence. We therefore advse you to leave ths job to your RITCHEY dealer. General notes on nstallaton In general, wheel and tre mountng as well as brake pad replacement are jobs for sklled mechancs. We therefore recommend that you have these jobs performed by an authorzed RITCHEY dealer. Be sure to strctly observe each of the followng nstructons. Nonobservance of these nstructons can lead to a component falure, resultng n a crash or njures. Installaton of non-matchng parts may cause the clampng to fal and lead to a serous crash. We recommend usng RITCHEY wheels wth RITCHEY tres as well as RITCHEY wheels wth RITCHEY brake pads, because they are desgned to ft and functon as an ntegrated whole. If you choose to use a part from another manufacturer, consult the product documentaton of ths part regardng sze accuracy to ensure proper ft and usablty wth RITCHEY components. RITCHEY assumes no responsblty for problems resultng from a RITCHEY component beng used wth a part from another manufacturer. Be sure to check the dmensonal accuracy of tres and rms before nstallaton. If you are n doubt, ask your RITCHEY dealer to check the components. He can decde, whether ths s a problem whch can be solved or whether the part has to be replaced. Damaged parts must not be re-used under any crcumstances whatsoever. If there s any doubt, we recommend replacng the part. Do not use your bke untl ths has been done. Bear n mnd that you need to get used to the brakng response of carbon rms, as wth WCS carbon tubular wheel sets. A carelessly actuated front wheel brake can lead to a crash. Before you set off for the frst tme be sure to practse usng the brakes away from publc roads. 3 4

Usng a torque wrench To acheve a relable clampng of two parts, RITCHEY consders the use of a torque wrench absolutely necessary. If the maxmum torque gven by RITCHEY does not generate suffcent clampng force, apply RITCHEY Lqud Torque (assembly paste) to nterconnectng surfaces to ncrease frcton. Exceedng the recommended torque (generally ndcated somewhere on the part to be clamped) creates too much clampng force, whch can lead to a component falure. Ths not only bears the hgh rsk of an accdent, but also vods the warranty. Overly loose or overly tght bolts can result n component falure and n an accdent Be sure to strctly observe the torque specfcatons. If you do not have a hgh-qualty torque wrench, see your local RITCHEY dealer. How to use the quck-releases The wheels are attached to the frame at the hub axles. Each axle s clamped tght n ts drop-outs by means of a quck-release. To remove the wheel open the quck-release lever and loosen the tghtenng nut by a few turns, f necessary. The front wheel s usually addtonally secured by means of drop-out catches at the fork tps whch prevent the wheel from comng off, n the event of an unntentonal loosenng of the quck-release. As the proper use of quck-releases s not common knowledge, whch can be a cause of accdents, we recommend that you read the followng nstructons thoroughly and practce the procedures as outlned. Quck-release retenton mechansms essentally consst of two operatve elements : 1. The hand lever on one sde of the wheel: Release ths lever to loosen the wheel and close t to create a strong clampng force on a 180 degree axs. 2. The tghtenng nut on the opposte sde of the clamp: Set the ntal tenson by turnng the nut on the threaded rod. How to securely mount the wheel Open the quck-release. The markng Open prnted on the lever should become vsble now. Move the lever back as f to close t. Now you should be able to read Close on the outsde of the lever. From the start of the closng movement up to about the frst half of ts travel the lever should move very easly,.e. wthout clampng the wheel. Over the second half of ts travel, the force you need to move t should ncrease consderably. Towards the end of ts travel the lever should be very hard to move. Use the ball of your thumb to push t n all the way whle your fngers pull on an mmovable part such as the fork or a rear stay, but not on a brake rotor or lne. In ts end poston the lever should be parallel to the bke,.e. t must not stck out to the sde. The lever should le close to the frame or fork leg so t cannot be opened accdentally. To check whether the lever s securely locked try to turn t whle t s closed. Apply pressure to the end of the hand lever. If you can turn the lever around, the wheel s not securely fastened. Open the lever agan and turn the tghtenng nut clockwse by half a turn to ncrease the ntal tenson. Close the lever agan and check the wheel for tghtness. If the lever can no longer be turned, t s properly fastened. Fnally lft the bke a few centmetres so that the wheel no longer touches the ground and ht the tre from above (e). If t s properly fastened, the wheel wll reman frmly fxed n the drop-outs of the frame. Be sure to never rde a bke wthout havng checked the secure fastenng of the wheels before you set off. A wheel that comes loose durng rdng s very lkely to cause an accdent Make sure the levers of both quck-releases are always on the sde opposte the chan. Ths wll help you to avod mountng the front wheel the wrong way round. Wth dsc brakes we recommend mountng the quck-release lever on the sde opposte the rotor to ensure a secure clampng. Mountng the wheels Be sure to also read the manual of your bke manufacturer before mountng or removng the wheels. After mountng a wheel n a road bke, please check whether the wheel s accurately seated n the drop-outs and centred between the fork legs or rear stays. Make sure the quck-release lever s properly closed and - mmedately close the release lever of the callper rm brake (Shmano, SRAM) or shft the bolt n the gear/brake lever (Campagnolo) back to ts orgnal poston, - mmedately reconnect the brake cable of V-brakes (rm brakes) Make sure the brake pads touch the rm and not the tre or the spokes, - mmedately mount the brake body of hydraulc rm brakes and close the quck-release Make sure the brake pads touch the rm and not the tre or the spokes, - f you have dsc brakes, check whether the brake pads rest snugly n ther seats n the brake callper before mountng the wheel. Ths s the case f the brake-pad clearance runs parallel to the wheel and f the wear ndcators are n the correct poston. Make sure you push the brake dsc between the brake pads, - actuate the brake lever (wth dsc brakes repeatedly) after mountng the wheel and tghtenng the quck-release. Spn the wheel subsequently. The brake dsc should not drag on the brake callper or on the brake pads. After mountng the wheel test the brakes whle standng. The brake lever should have a defned pressure pont. You should not be able to pull t all the way to the handlebars. If the result of the brake test s not satsfactory, check both, bke and brake system, accordng to your general bke manual. After the mountng make sure the brake pads or rotors are stll free of grease or other lubrcants before you set off on your bke agan. (e) 5 6

The tre equpment tres, tubes and rm tapes Tres have to be nflated to the correct ar pressure n order to work properly. The ar pressure range (mnmum and maxmum permssble pressure) s gven on the tre sde-wall or on the type label. The mnmum pressure specfcaton means maxmum cushonng and s therefore best for off-road cyclng. Rollng resstance decreases wth ncreasng pressure, but so does comfort. Inflaton pressure s often gven n the old measurement unts,.e. n ps (pounds per square nch). The followng table gves the most common pressure values n terms of both systems. ps bar ps bar ps bar Please note that the rder s weght s also relevant for the pressure. Lghtweght rders need less pressure, whereas heavy rders need more. The maxmum pressure specfcaton, however, should not be exceeded, even by heavy rders. Rdng wth too low pressure can lead to pnch flats, also referred to as snake btes. Treat your tres wth care and do not ever rde over sharp edges. Make sure not to exceed the maxmum permssble pressure when nflatng your tre It mght come off the rm or burst durng the rde. Hand pumps are often unsutable to nflate tres to hgh pressures unless fxng a flat whle on the road. A better choce s a hand and foot-operated stand pump equpped wth a pressure gauge whch enables you to check the pressure at home. Tres Make t a rule to only use the tre accordng to ts ntended use, as t may otherwse wear down or fal farly quckly. Be sure to observe the notes on the dfferent felds of usage n the RITCHEY catalogue and ask your RITCHEY dealer for advce, f you are not sure. Tubes RITCHEY tubes are avalable for road bkes and mountan bkes n two weght classes. The lghter ones are ntended to be used n competton, as they provde less rollng resstance. They are, however, more prone to snake bte flats. Generally, there are two valve types used for road bkes, mountan bkes and hybrd bkes: 1. Sclaverand or Presta valves: Ths type s commonly used on almost all types of bcycles. It s desgned to wthstand extremely hgh pressures and accept ar wth less force from the pump. 2. Schrader valve: Ths valve has been adopted from car tres and s manly used on mountan bkes. Both valve types are usually equpped wth a plastc cap to protect them from drt. After removng the protectve cap the Schrader valve can be nflated drectly wth a sutable pump. Wth Presta valves you frst have to undo the small knurled nut a lttle and depress t carefully untl ar starts to escape. Wth ths valve type t often happens that the knurled nut s not screwed down properly and ar slowly leaks out. Check that the nut s seated on ts stem. Rm tape RITCHEY rm tape s avalable for road bkes n the ETRTO sze 622 mm (28 ) n wdths of 17 mm and for mountan bkes n the ETRTO sze 559 mm (26 ) n wdths of 20 mm. The tape s desgned to ft n the rm valley of all RITCHEY wheels. Always make sure the rm tape accurately covers the entre rm base, remans centered and does not slp to ether sde. If the tape s too narrow, t wll not cover the sharp edges suffcently and tend to slp out of the correct poston. Tape that s too wde prevents relable fttng of the tre bead seat and can lead to unexpected tre blow off when nflated. Before mountng the tape, put the valve holes of tape and rm on top of each other. Press the tape n ths area towards the rm base and work t n evenly along both sdes untl t slps completely over the rm flange. Make sure the tape does not get twsted n the process. Fnsh by checkng the correct seat of the tape over the entre rm valley crcumference. Mountng the tres If you want to replace a tre, you need to know the dmensons of the old tre whch are marked on the sde of the tre. There are two desgnatons, the more precse of whch uses mllmetres. The number sequence means that the tre s 50 mm wde when fully nflated and has an nner dameter of 559 mllmetres. The other desgnaton for ths tre reads 26x2.1 whch refers to nches. Mountng a wder tre than prescrbed may result n a draggng of the tre tread along frame or fork. In the worst case, the wheel mght stop rotatng properly. Please note that under extreme condtons a wde tre mounted on a rm that s too narrow can make the tre slp off the rm whle rdng. Ths creates hgh rsk of an accdent Ask your local RITCHEY dealer for advce. Mountng a tre that s wder than the frame specs accept can cause serous njury f body parts nadvertently touch the spnnng tres and mud guards wll not work properly. Tres wder than the ones mounted by the bke manufacturer can make the shoe tp collde wth the tre whle takng a turn and pedallng at low speed. Ths can cause an accdent. Wre bead/clncher and foldng bead tres Check the condton of the rm and the rm tape as a frst step. Make sure the rm base s entrely covered and watch out for sharp edges and holes. Check whether the rm sdes are bent n or worn out n case of rm brakes. If you are n doubt, please contact your local RITCHEY dealer. Be sure to replace a defectve rm tape mmedately. When mountng a tre make sure no foregn matter, such as drt or sand, gets nsde the tre and take care to not damage the tube. Slp one sde of the tre onto the rm. Make sure to observe the prescrbed rotaton drecton ndcated on the tre sdewall. Use your thumbs to press the tre bead over the rm flange along the entre crcumference. Regardless of the type of rm, you should be able to do ths wthout any tools. If you don t succeed, you can use a plastc tre lever ( p. 9). tre. Tubes wear out from age. RITCHEY therefore advses to replace the tube, whenever you mount a new Stck the tube valve through the valve hole n the rm. Inflate the tube slghtly so that t becomes round and push t nto the tre cavty all the way round (e). Make sure not to leave any folds n the tube. To fnsh mountng the tre, start at the pont opposte of the valve. Use your thumbs to press the other tre bead over the rm flange as far as you can. Make sure the tube does not get pnched and squashed between tre and rm. Ths can be prevented by pushng the tube wth a fnger nto the tre hollow as you work t along. Work the tre onto the rm by approachng the valve symmetrcally from both sdes. Towards the end you must pull the tre forcefully downwards to make the already mounted porton of the tre slp nto the deepest part of the rm trough. Ths wll ease the mountng notceably on the last centmetres. (e) 7 8

Check the seat of the tube nsde the tre once agan and press the last stretch of tre over the rm flange by usng the balls of your thumbs. If you have problems, use plastc tre levers. Make sure the blunt ends pont towards the tube and that the tube does not get damaged. Press the valve deep nto the tre so that the tube does not get caught between rm and tre beads. Make sure the valve stands n uprght poston and does not appear crooked If t does not, you need to remove one tre bead and reposton the tube. To make sure the tube does not get pnched between rm and bead, nflate the tre a lttle and then flex t along the entre tre crcumference. Whle dong so you can check whether the rm tape has shfted. Do not use any tre mountng paste, soapy water or the lke. Otherwse the tre mght get twsted whle rdng and result n a valve breakage. Inflate the tube to the desred pressure. The maxmum pressure s marked on the tre sdewall. Check the proper seat of the tre by means of the wtness lne on the tre sde. The wtness lne must be even wth the rm flange all around the tre. Spn the wheel to check the proper seat. Dsmountng Remove the valve cap and the fastenng nut from the valve and deflate the tre completely. Press the tre from the sdes towards the centre of the rm opposte of the valve. You wll fnd t easer to remove the tre, f you do ths around ts entre crcumference. Poston the plastc tre lever under one of the tre beads approx. 5 cm besdes the valve and lever the tre out of the rm. Hold the tre lever tght n ths poston. Slp the second tre lever between rm and tre at a dstance of about ten centmetres beyond the frst lever and pull the tre bead over the edge of the rm n ths area, as well. Once a porton of the tre bead s levered over the rm edge, the tre sde can be pulled over the rm by workng one tre lever slowly around the entre crcumference. Now you can pull out the tube. If necessary, you can remove the whole tre by pullng the other tre bead off the rm. See to t that the valve does not get caught n the rm, as ths can damage the tube. Replace the tube. RITCHEY recommends reparng tubes, accordng to the nstructons of the repar kt manufacturer, only n case of on the road need and replacng the tube at the next opportunty. After havng removed the tre, you should check the rm tape. The tape should be sound, wthout cracks and ft evenly on the rm base, coverng all spoke ends and holes. Wth hollow secton rms,.e. double chamber rms, make sure the tape covers the entre rm base. It should not be too wde, so as to stand up along the rm sdes. Furthermore, you should only use rm tape made of fabrc or rgd synthetc materal wth hollow secton rms. Contact your RITCHEY dealer, f you are n doubt about what knd of rm tape to use. Tubular tres To ensure a durable ft, a tubular tre needs to be mounted carefully. The mountng needs to be carred out n several steps and may requre a lttle tme at the begnnng. A lttle practce and experence wth the glue you are usng and the respectve tubular model can speed up the job. For your own safety, RITCHEY recommends to have a tubular tre mounted by a dealer. There are two possbltes of glung a tubular tre to the rm,.e. wth adhesve tape or wth lqud tre glue. Usng adhesve tape wll speed up the mountng, the tre, however, wll not hold as relably as wth lqud glue. In the event of a puncture the tape wll often clng to the dsmounted tre and your spare tre may not bond to the rm suffcently. A poorly glued tre can come off the rm causng rsk of an accdent For a better ft of the tre, RITCHEY therefore recommends applyng a thck base consstng of multple thn layers of lqud tre cement (tre glue). The coat of glue wll stck to the rm even after tre removal and allow the spare tre to bond suffcently for the rde home. Once home, the spare tre needs to be removed and fxed permanently wth another layer of tre glue. Specal tre glue does, by the way, not only stck to rms and tres, but also to fngers and clothes. For ths reason be sure to wear old work clothes when mountng tres. When mountng a tre on a rm that has already been used, t may be necessary to remove glue resdues and drt wth a steel brush or wth emery cloth. When you are done, wpe the rm wth a soft rag and benzne. Remove the protectve valve cap and mount a valve extenson, f necessary, to the valve head unscrewed before, f you ntend to mount the tre n a deep secton rm. Use an approprate valve extenson whch s ncluded n the delvery of the RITCHEY WCS carbon tubular wheel set. Inflate the tre to a pont where t starts to become round and then stck the valve through the hole n the rm. Startng from the valve and workng n both drectons, press the tre nto the tre bed all the way round, as descrbed further below. If you are unable to mount the tubular tre completely on the rm or only wth excessve forces, t mght not be properly mounted. Stretch the tre, by puttng your foot n the tubular and pullng t forcefully upwards wth both hands. Stretch the tre n ths way all around several tmes. Then try agan and see whether the mountng has become easer. After mountng the tubular tre (that has not yet been glued), spn the wheel and see whether the tre runs true. The area where the valve comes out of the tre s often thckened whch leads to a vertcal runout of the rm and makes the wheel jolt durng the rde. Remove the burrs from the valve hole of an alumnum rm or countersnk t wth a bg drll, a trangular scraper or a round fle. If you have carbon rms be careful when removng the burrs from the hole edge wth a round fle. Insert the fle only from the outsde to the nsde and not vce versa, otherwse the fbres of the resn matrx mght fray out. Seal the area wth nstant glue subsequently. Ths pretreatment wll lead to an mproved valve fttng to the rm. If tme permts, you can leave the unglued tre nflated on the rm for a few days to make the fnal mountng easer. Clean the rm base from any grease or ol usng a benzne or sprtsoaked rag (e). Wat untl the solvent has evaporated completely before you start applyng the tre glue. The easest way to apply the glue s by clampng the wheel n a trung stand or by mountng t on an old fork clamped n a vce. Benzne and tre glue should only be used n a well-ared place, snce both materals are hghly flammable. Keep them n a safe place out of chldren s reach. (e) 9 10

Wth lqud tre glue you need several layers to create a well-adhesve base. Spread the tre glue evenly and n very thn layers over nearly the entre crcumference of the rm. Leave a secton of fve to ten centmetres wthout glue rght opposte the valve to facltate tre removal at a later date. Wth a lttle practce you wll be able to apply the glue straght from the tube. If ths does not work at frst, you mght fnd t easer to use a stff brush. When usng tre glue n tns, you need a brush n any case. Allow the tre glue to dry untl a fnger test wll proof that t s tacky-dry. Ths can take several hours. Apply another two thn layers of glue n the same way and let them dry agan. Leave the wheel unrdden untl the next day. Before mountng the tre also apply a coat of glue to the base tape. To complete the adhesve bed add a last coat of glue. Let the topmost coat flash off for a short moment, but not dry, and place the wheel on the ground wth the valve hole facng upwards. Inflate the tre untl t starts to round and then stck the valve through the valve hole and press t frmly aganst the rm. Make sure the sdes of the tre do not touch the adhesve bed, snce your tre wll otherwse look smudgy rght away. If you have taken care to leave the secton opposte the valve hole free of glue, you need not be concerned about glue smearng on the ground or drt gettng nto the glue when you place the wheel on the ground. Take hold of the tre rght and left of the valve wth both hands, pull t vgorously downward and work t bt by bt nto the rm base untl you have about 20 cm left to go. Startng from the top agan on ether sde of the valve pull the tre down wth your hands, lettng them gradually slp down to the not yet mounted secton. Keepng the tre taut by holdng your fngers aganst the rm and your thumbs on the tre, brace the wheel aganst your hps. Press the tre wth both thumbs nto the rm base. Once the tre s seated n the base, t needs to be centred, snce t wll rarely run true rght away. To do so clamp the wheel n the mountng stand agan and spn t. If the tread does not run accurately n the centre or f there s any lateral swervng of the tubular, lft t n that area, twst t a lttle and place t down agan. When the tre runs smoothly n the centre, take the wheel off the mountng stand and nflate the tre to approxmately half ts normal pressure. Lean your hands on the ends of the axle and quck-release skewers and roll the wheel a few metres on the ground. As you roll the wheel, vary between pressng t vertcally downward and at a slant to ether sde. When the tre runs true durng the fnal check, nflate the tre to the maxmum pressure. Now release the pressure to about 4 bar. Wat at least eght hours, or better yet, a whole day, before takng t for a frst rde. Inflate the tre to the desred pressure, accordng to the recommendatons of RITCHEY. Removal To dsmount the tre, start opposte the valve by pushng the tre to the centre of the rm untl there s a gap and the tre starts to come off. If the tre remans tght, stck a plastc tre lever nto the gap and lft the tre off the rm. Wheels Although wheels are delvered accurately trued, t s a matter of fact that the spokes wll bed n to the hub and rm on the frst klometres. As a result thereof the spokes lose a lttle tenson. Furthermore, a loosenng of the spokes on ther own can lead to a lateral or vertcal runout of the wheel. For ths reason make sure the wheel set s checked and trued up, f necessary, after you have run t n, at the latest, however, after about 400 klometres (248 mles). Trung up the wheels Trung the wheels s a job best left to a bcycle dealer. Inapproprately tghtened spokes can cause rreparable damage. If you feel you are sklled, be sure to observe the followng nstructons: Do not release the npples to true up a lateral or vertcal wobble. Always re-tenson the spokes to regan the tenson they have lost durng rdng. The npples of wheels may clng to the spokes f the wheel s older. It s advsable to start wth slghtly releasng the npples,.e. by a quarter turn, before you tghten them, to prevent the spokes from wndng up wth undue tenson. To avod any damage RITCHEY recommends storng RITCHEY wheels n a wheel bag when transportng your bke wth the wheels removed or when you do not use them for a longer perod of tme. (e) Mountng the sprocket assembly RITCHEY wheels are only avalable wth a freehub for Shmano, Campagnolo and SRAM sprocket assembles (e). If you have a Shmano 10-speed assembly, make sure to nsert the thn spacer rng on the freehub, pror to nstallng the sprockets. Otherwse you wll not be able to fasten t securely. RITCHEY freewheel bodes are made of steel or alumnum. If you ft the alumnum freehub bodes of WCS wheel sets wth sngle sprockets or wth sprocket assembles that are assembled from sngle sprockets plus spacers, the sngle sprockets wll eat ther way nto the softer materal of the freehub body whch makes a later removal dffcult. The freewhub body wll be damaged or notched from ths type of use It s more advsable to use Shmano Spderarm carrer-style sprocket assembles. These sprocket assembles have the larger sprockets mounted on an alumnum or plastc support, whch provdes a larger matng surface, thus dstrbutng the load of the sprockets more effectvely. Performance Tp: Spray the sprockets and the whole sprocket assembly wth a thn coat of wax before mountng t and let t dry well. Ths prevents corroson and makes for an easer removal at a later date. Push the sprockets onto the profled freehub body. The profle s asymmetrc to ensure the ramps of adjacent sprockets are optmally postoned n relaton to one another. Make sure that the tooth number engraved on each sprocket faces nward. If there are no engraved tooth numbers, mount the sprockets so that the ramps face outward. Grease the thread and the contact area of the lock nut and tghten t by hand by one to two turns before applyng a fxng tool. Tghten the nut wth a torque wrench ftted onto the fxng tool (f). Be sure to observe the recommended torque of Nm and do not exceed the maxmum torque. Over tghtenng the torque can damage the thread. Fnsh by turnng the freehub assembly wth the sprockets nstalled. Check t for ease of movement and make sure the sprockets run true. If they do not, you need to remove the sprocket assembly and fnd out the cause. After replacng a sprocket assembly or mountng the rear wheel for the frst tme onto your bke you need to check the functonng of the gears. Please make sure the deralleur lmt stops are properly adjusted. An napproprate adjustment can lead to a falure of the drve or make the rear deralleur collde wth the spokes causng rsk of an accdent and damage to your bke (f) 11 12

Dsmountng the sprocket assembly Start wth mountng a plug tool that matches exactly the profle of the sprocket assembly lock nut. Secure the tool, f necessary, wth the quck-release. Instead of closng t as usual, however, be sure to only tghten t a lttle to help tenson the plug tool nto the splnes. Ths s to prevent the tool from tltng or slppng off abruptly. Hold the sprocket assembly tght wth a chan whp. Loosen the assembly locknut by usng a rng or fork spanner that matches the extractor tool. Open the quck-release bt by bt as the lock rng comes loose so that you can remove t. Remove the sprocket assembly from the freehub body. The frst sprockets and the spagers are mounted ndvdually. If they cannot be removed, they may have worked themselves nto the surface of the freehub body. Free the sprockets by nsertng two wde-blade screwdrvers opposte each other nto the gaps at the outermost sprocket and gently work the sprocket loose. When checkng and adjustng the rear deralleur, be sure to follow the nstructons of the general user manual of your bke or the user manual of the gear manufacturer. Mountng the brake rotors RITCHEY MTB Dsc Wheels are made for 6-hole mountngs n accordance wth the IS 2000 standard. Place the rotor on the hub flange. Observe the arrow on the rotor. It must be vsble from outsde and pont n the wheel s rotatonal drecton. Check whether the rotor engages fully wth the hub flange. If not, both the rotor and the hub flange need to be measured. In ths case, contact your dealer. Be sure to always use orgnal parts suppled by the brake manufacturer (rotors and bolts). Insert all sx bolts wthout grease and tghten them wth a Torx or Allen key untl ther heads engage wth the rotor. If necessary, apply a lqud bolt retanng compound (Loctte) to the bolt threads, f they have not yet been treated wth retanng compound by the manufacturer. Now rotate the rotor contrary to the drecton of the arrow and tghten the bolts crosswse wth a torque wrench to a torque of 3 to 4 Nm. Then tghten them further to the torque recommended by the manufacturer (e). If the bolts are to be re-used after dsmountng, they need to be treated wth another coat of retanng compound Be sure to strctly observe the mountng nstructons of the bke and brake manufacturers n the respectve user manuals. (e) Brake pads for rm brakes RITCHEY recommends combnng RITCHEY brake pads wth RITCHEY rms for best results. Contact your local RITCHEY dealer f you have questons. If the brake pads are worn down, have them replaced mmedately. The degree of wear can be determned by the wear ndcators, such as grooves n the pads that wear down gradually wth brakng (f). For safest brakng performance n the straght be sure to always actuate both brakes when brakng s requred. The front brake controls up to 100% of the stoppng force. Over brakng the front wheel can make the bke topple over. Be sure to test your brakes after a brake pad replacement n an area free of traffc untl you have full control of your bke. Be careful when applyng the brakes n a corner. Rtchey recommends that you avod brakng n corners as ths makes the tres slp and leads to a crash. In the unlkely case you have to slow down when takng a turn please actuate the rear brake. Please note that the brakng power and the road grp of your bke are both greatly reduced n wet condtons. Be partcularly cautous when rdng on wet roads and do not rde as fast as you would n dry condtons allowng for addtonal tme to stop. Brakng on fast and steep descents can heat up the wheel and possbly damage the tre and/or tube. The glued tre can come loose or the tube may suddenly lose ar. Ths can make you lose control of your bke and lead to a crash. Do not let the brakes drag when rdng downhll. Stop, f necessary, and let the brakes cool down from tme to tme. Before usng your RITCHEY wheels n a race whle t s ranng, we strongly recommend you test rde your bke n the ran to get used to the dfferent brakng performance. Please note that the sdes of the rms wear down, as well. Ask your dealer to check the rm thckness after you are through the second set of brake pads at the latest (g). (f) (g) worn ok 13 14

Warranty terms Under European consumer law, the purchaser has full statutory warranty rghts wthn the frst two years from date of purchase. In North Amerca, these rghts apply to the frst year from the date of purchase. Accordng to these laws, your dealer s responsble for ensurng the product s free of defects that could cause premature wear from normal use. The two year warranty law s only vald n countres where European (EU) regulatons apply Please ask your dealer about the regulatons n your country. Warranty clams wll only be accepted, f the bcycle has been used solely for ts ntended purpose (see secton Before your frst rde ). It does not cover damage resultng from wear (wear of tres, brake pads and brake track of the rm n the case of rm brakes), neglect (nsuffcent care and mantenance), accdents, overstress caused by overloadng, ncorrect nstallaton, mproper treatment or as a result of modfcatons made to the component. Be sure to strctly follow all assembly nstructons n ths manual as well as all addtonal nstructons provded by the manufacturers of products used n conjuncton wth RITCHEY products, especally bolt torque specfcatons and the prescrbed mantenance nstructons. Observe all nstructons wth regard to procedures and verfcaton processes lsted n ths manual as well as any other nstructons that may be ncluded n the delvery of RITCHEY pro ducts. Also adhere strctly to any and all nstructons referrng to the replacement of safety relevant components, such as worn brake pads and rm sdes. Your drect contact wth regard to all ssues outlned n ths manual and correspondng nstructons s your local RITCHEY dealer, who should be qualfed to answer your questons. In order to obtan assstance from a RITCHEY dealer, you may be requred to show your recept. If you have a warranty ssue or concern, you must contact the RITCHEY dealer who sold you the bcycle component n queston. RITCHEY has exclusve agreements wth all of our partners to servce potental warrantes. If you purchase a RITCHEY product from an unauthorzed dealer, e.g. an aucton ste at the nternet, you have no recourse through RITCHEY on any of ts authorzed dealers, the warranty becomes vod and you must seek resoluton wth the reseller who sold you the product. A note on wear Bcycles components are subject to wear due to normal and proper use. The rate of wear wll depend on care and mantenance, the bcycle usage and the envronmental condtons, such as ran, mud, dust and sand. Some components requre regular care and mantenance. Nevertheless, just lke all components, they wll sooner or later reach the end of ther servce lfe dependng on ntensty and condtons of use. The followng RITCHEY components are especally subject to wear due to the nature of ther ntended use and not covered for wear under ths warranty: Tre equpment Tres wear down dependng on the rdng style, the surface of the ground and the stress they are exposed to. Ths wear cannot be prevented, but t can be reduced by adoptng good rdng habts and careful handlng. A worn tre wthout tread can no longer provde the usual road grp and may result n an accdent. Be sure to replace tres that are worn, cracked or damaged n any way for your own safety. To lengthen the servce lfe of your tres, avod any brakng that stops the wheel suddenly and drags t over the ground and do not rde over sharp edges. Tubes Tubes wear down and get old, as well. RITCHEY therefore advses to replace the tube, whenever you mount a new tre. Rms wth rm brakes Rm brakes not only cause wear to the brake pads, but also to the rm. Therefore, check your rms regularly, e.g. whenever nflatng the tres. Be sure to observe the specfcatons gven on the rm. Ask your bcycle dealer to examne the remanng thckness of the rms at the latest when you are through your second set of brake pads. If the rm sdes deform or show harlne cracks when you ncrease the pressure, ths may be a sgn that the rms have reached the end of ther servce lfe and that they have to be replaced. Worn rms can fal wthout warnng and cause serous njury, so do not neglect ths nspecton. Brake pads Brake pads wear down durng brakng as a result of the frcton on the rm. Dependng on rdng habts, topography, surface of ground and weather condtons, the brake pads wear down at a more or less rapd pace. Brake pads on carbon brake tracks wear down partcularly quckly. Therefore, be sure to check the condton of the brake pads after every rde and replace them n tme. Manufacturer s guarantee RITCHEY products have been developed and manufactured wth great care and have gone through numerous testng controls. Our products are examned as part of our nternal qualty control pro cess to meet strct standards as well as by external, ndependent test laboratores.
