3 PROPERTY HISTORY Originally from County Wexford, Ireland, Timothy Murphy, known to some as Don Timoteo or Old Tim, moved to California in In 1844 he was granted 21,679 acres consisting of three Ranchos: Rancho Santa Margarita, Rancho San Pedro, and Rancho Las Gallinas. Upon his death in 1853, John Lucas, Murphy s nephew, inherited the 7,600 acre Rancho Santa Margarita in the shadow of Mount Tamalpais. Cirilo Chillo Gonzales purchased 2,500 acres of the ranch in Timothy Murphy & successors had used all their property for cattle grazing, hunting, and logging. Gonzales changed the 2,500 acres he purchased to sheep grazing and was subsequently contracted by the U.S. government to provide wool for World War II soldiers. He eventually subdivided the land several times selling chunks at a time. The remaining parcels were used for cattle grazing, until their sale. In more recent years, Ben Weisshaut purchased 440 acres of Rancho Santa Margarita. Currently this land is being used for recreation, equestrian, mountain biking, and hiking.
