Quad Link 2.0 Suspension Breakdown While the concept of the Quad Link 2.0 system is the same as the original design, the new version provides a slightly more linear action for suspension movement. Like the first gen Quad Link, the rear wheel's axle path and leverage ratio on the shock changes as the wheel moves through its travel to provide optimized control and energy transfer. This is accomplished by having the swingarm rotate off of the two quick links that connect the swingarm to the mainframe. Because the swingarm is mounted to two links, it does not rotate from a single point, or pivot. Instead, the swingarm "floats" or rotates from a constantly moving pivot point in space. This pivot point is called the Instantaneous Pivot Center(IPC). Because of this changing pivot location, the shock's leverage ratio and the axle path of the rear wheel change to allow the suspension to react differently to pedal or bump induced forces. The initial pivot point begins above and forward of the BB to provide a higher leverage ratio on the shock. When the suspension is first compressed the rear axle travels in a rearward and up direction, lengthening the effective chainstay length and providing a greater leverage ratio on the rear shock. This offers better square-bump compliance and reduces the tendency of having the bike stall when encountering an impact (especially important to maintain speed while coasting through a corner or when trying to clean that technical climb). The lengthening of the effective chainstay also creates chaingrowth, which promotes the rear wheel to dig into the ground and maintain traction under pedaling force. Midway through the travel the axle path changes to an arc around the BB, yielding zero chainstay growth to allow the wheel to freely move without any pedal induced interference while the leverage on the shock gradually decreases to slow compression and resist bottoming on hard landings. The result is a constantly adjusting suspension system that allows the suspension to easily react to small bumps to maintain traction and reduce rider fatigue while providing greater control under hard impacts or landings. A lifetime warranty on all bearings ensures that the suspension will operate smoothly for the duration of ownership.

2 2. Marin Alchemist Quad XCR Series The Alchemist Quad XCR offers riders a race ready package built upon the Quad Link 2.0 suspension system. New for 2009 the Quad XCR started with a clean sheet of paper. Marin's goal was to build on the incredible pedaling and bump absorbing efficiency of the Quad XC design in a shorter travel format. The design is aimed at the rider who demands a suspension bike with the efficiency and weight of a hardtail while offering more control in harsh terrain. The foundation of the XCR is a new Hydroformed 6066 T6 Aluminum frame T6 is among the strongest and most fatigue resistant grades of weldable and formable aluminum alloy provides a 21% increase in Ultimate Tensile Strength and 13% increase in Fatigue Strength when compared with 6061 T6. This allowed Marin's engineers to develop hydroformed tubes of thinner wall thickness and thus lighter weight while maintaining the stiffness, strength and fatigue test results Marin frames must surpass. Exclusively using 6066 T6 material has resulted in a 100mm travel XC frame chassis with the greatest strength and stiffness to weight ratio that Marin has ever produced to date. The core of the bike is Marin's Quad Link suspension system. For the XCR Marin's engineers have tuned the Quad Link system to provide a slightly more linear spring rate than the Quad XC to provide riders with a compliant yet efficient suspension system in a shorter, 100mm travel application. For stiffness, forgings are used at the main suspension joints for a high strength/low weight combination. The Alchemist will be available in five sizes and three different build levels, ranging in price from $2,299 to $5,499US.

The result is a 120mm travel bike that is fast and efficient for the Endurance/Marathon racer while being durable and plush for the trail rider who wants a capable bike for riding diverse terrain without the weight penalty. Also changed from previous years is the branding of the series, which now designates each model with a number instead of model name. For 2009 the Mount Vision series will offer four models; the top level 5.9, 5.8, 5.7 and 5.6. Since its inception the Quad XC series has been designed as a lightweight and efficient suspension bike, and has always favored aggressive, cross country riding. With the introduction of the lighter, shorter travel Alchemist Quad XCR series, Marin is continuing with the evolution of the Mount Vision by tweaking the geometry to enhance ride quality. To increase stability the bottom bracket height has been slightly lowered(.25in) while the Front Center measurement has been increased(.5in). Mated with a 69.5 degree headtube angle, these small changes allow the rider to expend less energy and concentration on controlling the bike on descents so they have more gas in the tank for the next climb. Weight savings have been performed by revising the tubing in the mainframe; losing 200 grams over the first generation Quad XC frame. Unique to the top-level Mount Vision 5.9 is an all new carbon swingarm, further reducing frameset weight by 400 grams. The swingarm on all models features forged, modular dropouts that are replaceable on both drive and nondrive sides. This not only allows the customer to save big money by only having to buy a dropout instead of an expensive swingarm in the event of a bad crash, but also allows the ability to run Marin's 135mm SRAM Maxle Thu-axle assembly for those wanting the ultimate in stiffness.

4 Wolf Ridge Quad Trail Series Although the Wolf Ridge has been apart of Marin s trail bike lineup since 2000, the all-new design features a new frame built around a 140mmm travel version of the Quad Link 2.0 suspension system. Marin s goal was to offer riders a versatile bike that is efficient and light enough to be used everyday as well as being durable enough for light duty freeriding or Super D racing should they decide to expand their riding styles. Frameset now consists of a completely new hydroformed mainframe with reinforced headtube and hydroformed swingarm that features SRAM's Maxle 360 Thu-axle quick release dropout system. This feature significantly improves rear wheel stiffness while maintaining the ease of use of a traditional QR. Geometry has been optimized with a 67 degree headtube angle to increase stability on steep terrain while the wheelbase has been kept to a short 43.8"(Medium size) to maintain agility and responsiveness for tight trails and hard pedaling efforts. Suspension features Marin s new and improved Quad Link 2.0 linkage system providing 140mm of travel. Improvements consist of relocation of suspension links and shock to the inside of the mainframe to optimize mass centralization plus reducing contamination from the elements and the rear tire while improving tire clearance. The Quad Link 2.0 system also reduces additional hardware and weight by housing the shock inside the linkage mounts, requiring only four bolts to hold the shock and swingarm in place. Lastly, the new links feature screw-on aluminum bearing caps to fully protect bearings from contaminants and water spray during cleaning.

5 5. Marin Team Hardtail Series Carbon: The Team CXR frame was derived from Marin s CXR road program with the deviation of designing a frame with organic shapes for aesthetical and structural gain. By design, the flowing shapes helped Marin designers create a structure that distributes external forces evenly through the frame. This dispersion effect takes force input loads and spreads them to all of the structural members of the frame, allowing the tubes to be made as thin as possible without sacrificing stiffness or durability. The tubes that make up the frame utilize 4 different grades of carbon fiber ranging from medium to very high modulus. These filaments are then woven into one of 4 separate geometric orientations. The combination of utilizing different filaments in conjunction with the orientation of the weave, as well as selective choice of resins adds strength and stiffness in key areas while tuning ride characteristics that is nearly impossible to achieve with metal. Unique frame details include bridges at the seat tube and head tube junctions to further disperse loads and a head tube that is enclosed by reinforcement bands from the top and down tubes. These fixtures increase strength without having to employee larger diameter head tubes that require forks with larger and heavier steerer tubes. G7 Aluminum: Evolved from Marin Hydro Edge framesets, three new models feature Scandium enriched aluminum for Aluminum offers the best value for building a lightweight frame for racing applications, but without proper refinement, can often hinder rider fatigue levels by being overly harsh. To improve the ride quality and durability, Scandium is introduced during the alloying stage of the manufacturing process of the frame tubes. Stronger and more dense than aluminum, Scandium requires less material to be used while having an increased ability to dampen shock or vibration transmission to the rider. Combined with the malleability of aluminum the combination allows Marin s engineers to produce a lighter frame with the ride quality and durability of more exotic materials without the associated costs. Titanium: To produce a bike with a lively ride quality equal to steel with zero weight penalties and the durability to be hammered on season after season there is no substitute for titanium. The Marin Team Ti builds on the esteemed metal with enhanced tube shaping and profiles. Triple butted 3/2.5 tubing minimizes weight while profile manipulation retains stiffness in head tube and bottom bracket areas for efficient energy transfer and precise control.

Based on the success of the popular ALPs series and existing cross bikes sales in select international markets, the Cortina and Toscana models usher in a whole new way to experience a Marin bike. Leading the cross charge is the Cortina. The flagship model features a proprietary, Hydroformed triple-butted 6069 Aluminum tubeset. The new tubeset was designed to shed weight while offering ample mud clearance and enhanced ride quality to smoothen out the rough edges of any road or cross race course. Conducting shifting duties is a mix of SRAM Force and Rival components capped off with FSA SL-K Light Compact Carbon cranks. The race ready machine will roll on Mavic Aksium Race wheels with Vittoria Cross tires. Designed with a competition ready geometry and available in five sizes, the Cortina is poised to tackle any barrier, whether on the street or on the track. For riders needing a more utilitarian bike, the Toscana offers the performance of a top shelf cyclocross racer while pulling double duty as a trusty commuter bike. Utilizing technology from the ALPs and Natural Fit series of bikes, the Toscana features a 6061 Aluminum Hydro-Road tubeset with Edge4 seat and chainstays. For the versatility of commuting or light touring, the frame and fork feature rack mounts. The geometry of the Toscana positions the rider in a slightly more upright riding position to minimize rider fatigue, providing trouble free riding while commuting or exploring uncharted roads. Component highlights include a Shimano Sora and Tiagra drivetrain and durable Mavic CXP-22S rims. A FSA Compact Drop handlebar directs rider input down to the Kenda Kross Supreme tires ensuring agile handling while piloting through city streets or down dirt paths.
