1 TJI s with Side Top Flange tches TJI flanges should never be cut or notched; however, it is recognized that damage occurs from time-to-time. The tables in this technical bulletin only apply to notches in the side of the top flange; however, it does not apply to conditions including notches across the top of the flange, notches within 3 feet of an intermediate support (multiple/continuous span joist), notches in the bottom flange, or multiple notches in a single joist. For any of the preceding notch conditions, see the three options below: 1) Header the TJI joist off around the notched flange area. See Technical Bulletin, TB-816, for maximum allowable joist header spans. For special conditions that fall outside of TB-816, contact your Weyerhaeuser representative. 2) Replace the damaged joist or add a new TJI joist within 3 inches of the notched joist. For joists spaced at 24" on-center (or greater), a new joist may be required on each side of the damaged joist due to sheathing span limits. Use Weyerhaeuser software or literature to verify the allowable joist span when adding a new simple span joist beside a damaged multiple span joist. 3) Contact the Weyerhaeuser Technical Support office in your area for specific notch analysis. In the following tables, the " " columns give the maximum allowable notched flange spans that do not require a repair, while the "" columns show the maximum allowable notched flange spans when a repair is required. Figure 1 below shows how to determine a notch location, "X" and the side notch depth, "d". Figure 2 and Figure 3 show allowable repair options when a repair is required. Either option is permitted to be used with the tables. Figure 1: Allowable tch Location and Side tch Determination Page 1 of 8
