11 Olympic competition format The Olympic Games mountain bike competitions are cross-country events run on undulating circuits featuring technical descents, forest roads, rocky paths and obstacles. Riders must complete several laps of the circuit, which vary from 4-6km, with winning times usually between 1h25-1h40 in both the men s and women s events. The number of laps to be raced will be announced at the team managers meeting on the day before the first race (the women s race), with the aim to ensure that the winning time is within the set parameters. The number of laps may be changed up to two hours before the start of the race, reflecting any changes in weather conditions and the track. A total of 50 men and 30 women race on separate days. Riders are seeded into a starting grid according to their current Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) ranking. After a mass start, the first rider to cross the finish line is declared the winner. Differences between the UCI world championships and the Olympic Games There are no differences in the format or rules. There are more competitors in the field at the UCI world championships than at the Olympic Games, due to different quotas for each NOC at the Olympic Games there are a maximum of three men and two women per NOC. At the UCI world championships there are also junior and U-23 competitions. Changes since the London 2012 Olympic Games None. Sport rules and procedures Equipment description Competition Format and Rules Formato e regras da competição / Format et régles de la compétition Most mountain bikes used in competition are available for general purchase and share the following characteristics: Wide off-road tires Disc brakes Some form of shock-absorbing suspension (front and/or rear) Tiebreak rules If they cannot be resolved by electronic means, ties will stand. Penalties/disqualification rules A rider may be disqualified if during the event he/she commits any of the following infringements: Pushing or interfering (jersey pulling) with another rider by hand or by other means Obtaining non-regulation assistance Displaying indecent conduct or using foul language Committing acts of violence Going outside the race course boundaries Using radio links or other remote means of communication

12 Lapping Any rider whose time is 80% slower than the race leader s first lap is pulled out of the race. This rider is required to leave the race at the end of his/her lap in the zone provided for the purpose (the "80% zone") except when the rider is on his/her final lap. Riders pulled out of the race are listed in the results in the order in which they are pulled out of the race, showing the number of laps down. Protests/appeals The Commissaires' Panel decisions are final. There are no protests.
