3 THE FACTORY 2017 Product Guide 3 It s perhaps a little known fact that every one of our bicycles to date has been through our very own factory and assembly facility in Santa Cruz, California. Each model starts life as a test mule, an aluminum prototype which is designed, machined and welded together here in Santa Cruz, then covertly test ridden on trails all over the place. At the same time, in the same building, our carbon test lab is refining the lay-up process we ll be using on the finished carbon product. Once we re happy with how the mule rides, we release the designs for a carbon mold to be made at our exclusive manufacturing facility in China. We use our own facility because it s the only way to ensure advancements made in our test lab remain proprietary. Every single frame produced is quality checked by a dedicated Santa Cruz employee, before being shipped to our factory in California. Upon arrival in Santa Cruz, every frame is fully checked again before the links and bearings are meticulously hand-torqued into place, the swing arm attached and the shock inserted. Then we check it all again. And then we build the bike to order, with the build kit you requested, in the color you requested, with a pair of wheels we hand-built here in Santa Cruz too. If that all sounds a bit labor intensive, it s because it is. And it s done by crew of people who intimately know their way around our products because they ride them every day. And race them at the weekends, and evenings, and whenever else pride and a beer is at stake. We call them our Santa Cruz Factory Racing team because that s exactly what they are.

4 2017 Product Guide VPP Patented design VPP is based on the patented principle of having two short links rotating in opposite directions. This system provides huge design flexibility, allowing us to manipulate shock rates to the intended purpose and character of each model; from short travel endurance bikes to World Championship winning DH machines. Principles are one thing, understanding them is another. What really sets Santa Cruz apart is the deep knowledge we ve gained over the years on how to tune VPP into all the various shock, drivetrain, wheel size and travel configurations to create the perfect balance. We don t need to come up with new suspension gimmicks each year. We just keep refining our winning one. Short and sweet The beauty of VPP system is that the short links allow us to create compact tidy suspension designs. Combine that with large diameter pivot axles running on angular contact bearings and you get the integrity, responsiveness and precision that Santa Cruz frames are famous for. A lifetime of joy With grease ports on the lower link providing super easy maintenance and a lifetime support on all bearings, the VPP system is guaranteed to keep running forever*. *or at least a very very very long time. 5

5 2017 Product Guide 7 CARBON TECH We pride ourselves on some pretty fancy carbon fiber engineering. In 2015 we made it a priority to trickle-down our carbon radness to within reach of more riders by introducing the new C level option. The catch? A minimal weight gain of approximately grams (0.6 lbs) for the C frame over the CC due to the different grade of carbon used. Whether you re riding a carbon CC or C frame, you get exactly the same legendary strength and stiffness because we use exactly the same manufacturing facility and techniques: One-piece lay-up and curing Laying up and curing the front triangle all at the same time decreases the amount of material used by eliminating overlapping joints that have to be bonded or wrapped with carbon. Less material means fewer grams. This method is more intensive and meticulous because each frame requires its own dedicated tooling and nothing is shared between sizes. Seamless integration of junctions and mounts One-piece lay-up allows us to wrap carbon fiber seamlessly between tubes, allowing the frame to distribute loads and absorb impact energy more effectively. mounts, pivot mounts, dropouts and disc brake tabs are all fully integrated using uni-directional carbon plies, making our carbon frames stronger than any others we ve tested. Optimal fiber compaction Our lay-up process allows us to precisely control the pressure exerted from inside the frame outwards against the mold. This is absolutely essential for achieving maximum compaction of the carbon fiber layers during the lay-up and curing process. Eliminating gaps between layers prevents resin from migrating away from where it s needed, thus minimizing the risk of delamination. The net result is a frame we re as proud of on the inside as we are on the out. Full carbon tubes for internal routing We use full-length carbon tubes for our internal routing that are integrated during the lay-up process. It s a complicated feat, but keeps things tidier than anything else we know of and means hassle-free routing of your cables every time.

It s as at home on a backcountry mission with Steve Peat as it is hopping fences with Danny MacAskill. 130mm of VPP travel produces a shorter chainstay length and lower BB height compared to the Bronson. This creates a uniquely playful character with an insatiable appetite for negotiating steep, technical climbs. And when it s time to head on down home, playtime becomes a riot. The 5010 s 67-degree head tube angle and generous reach welcomes the use of short stems for precise handling on rapid descents. The 5010 shares all the latest VPP hardware as big brother Bronson too. The top-tube-mounted, box-section upper link offers huge amounts of durability and stiffness for a mid-travel trail bike, and the lower link rests cleanly out of the way to minimize rock strikes. Bike choice can be a numbers game, but if your game is conquering anything in your path then 5010 is the only number you need know.

12 2017 Product Guide 20 BRONSON When we introduced Bronson, it took the market by storm, redefining what people expected from a 150mm trail bike. From the Trans-Provence to the Andes Pacifico, it became the bike of choice in uncertain terrain. The geometry has since evolved to meet the demand from riders on a bike of this ilk today. The seat tube angle places the rider right in control above the cranks and perfectly in position to lay down the power. Meanwhile a 66 degree head tube angle combines with ample reach and short chainstay lengths to create a fullon rally-ready geometry. The VPP lower link tucks neatly above the bottom bracket, fully-recessed and protected from impacts. Meanwhile the box-section upper link mounts cleanly to the top-tube and enhances lateral stiffness as a result. The shock is tuned to deliver better small bump sensitivity and a more progressive mid-stroke than the original Bronson did. Now incorporating many subtle undertones from the Nomad, the Bronson delivers teenage kicks right through the day. And night. All right.

18 2017 Product Guide 32 HIGHBALL The Highball is a race ready hardtail available in 29 and 27.5 wheel sizes to accommodate the broadest range of rider styles. We kept the geometry similar between the two versions, to enable the different wheel size traits to shine through. This delivers some fantastically compact chainstays for the 29er, in order to keep it inline with its 27.5 brother. Both models enjoy a relatively long reach which encourages them to be ridden with shorter stem/bar combos that liven up the feel and turn response. The 70.5-degree angle supports that approach, striking the right balance of quick handling and stability with a front end that doesn t wander all over the climbs. In size small, we offer the 27.5 carbon and the 29 aluminum models specifically. And for single-speeders, we offer the aluminum versions with replaceable dropouts. With a lightweight, compliant 27.2 mm seat post as a finishing touch, the Highball reveals itself as unapologetically fast and surprisingly fun. Every bit what an endurance hardtail from Santa Cruz should be.

When conditions get loose and the traction just ain t there, you ll want to reach for bigger tires elevates Hightower to a whole different level, enabling you to rise above the pow, rail the soft spots and carry momentum where standard tires bog down. No matter what size you run, geometry remains optimized thanks to a neat little High/Low setting on the upper link that flips to adjust bottom bracket height*. Hightower s 67 head angle, longer reach and trim chain stays combine to create an altogether different class of dreadnought in any configuration. 135mm of VPP travel is reinforced by a 148 rear axle spacing and the kind of Nomad-style linkage arrangement and swingarm design we reserve for the heaviest hitters in our model line up. 34 2017 Product Guide 64 NOMAD The Nomad was originally designed to meet the rigors of the emerging Enduro World Series race format. The aggressive 65-degree head angle seemed worthy of the new breed of enduro stages that were increasingly like full-on DH courses. However, the more we rode this bike, the more we realized how deceiving the numbers on paper were. After all, a bike with 165mm of travel could perhaps be forgiven for feeling a bit overkill when riding your local trails, right? But the Nomad doesn t need exonerating for anything. The rangy cockpit, relatively steep seat tube angle and VPP suspension make for a frighteningly efficient pedaler for such a capable descender. Designed specifically around one-by drivetrains only, the Nomad is also able to boast some seriously compact chain stays as a result. And with 12 speed now hitting the market, you ll never look back. The Nomad is uncompromising in its purpose, and yet somehow accommodating on almost any kind of trail. So much so, that the DNA created here can now be traced throughout the entire Santa Cruz line.

38 2017 Product Guide 72 STIGMATA The Stigmata is a cyclocross bike deserving of the Santa Cruz name. We do things a bit backwards here at Santa Cruz. While most companies first introduced carbon fiber on their road bikes, we made mountain bikes from it to prove its strength and versatility as a material. Then we made a downhill bike from it. And only then did we deem it worthy for the reincarnation of the Stigmata! We created the carbon Stigmata simply because we missed the old one! There was a lot more we could do with carbon than we could with the original aluminum model. Including hydraulic disc brakes, which meant we wouldn t have to put up with ancient braking technology to get our drop bar on. The new Stigmata was primarily designed as a thoroughbred cyclocross race bike. But it inadvertently became a devilishly versatile all rounder too. It ll fit 41mmwide tires with room for mud, but handles nicely with skinny road tires for base miles. It s also home to our first PressFit 30 bottom bracket. We didn t make this decision lightly, but not only is PF30 capable of accommodating all road bike cranks, it allowed us to make the bike lighter while maintaining the strength and durability in the bottom bracket area that you d expect from a Santa Cruz. By using our C grade of carbon fiber, we were also able to put Stigmata performance within the reach of more riders than ever before. The Stigmata became a regular at grass roots cross meets around the world within its first season. And went on to win the notorious 3 Peaks race in Yorkshire on its first outing at the hands of Hope Factory Racing s Paul Oldham.

In desert-dry conditions the wider tires float above the dust and find oases of grip where standard tires flounder.
