The comfortable position of pedalling combined with a markedly sporty nature allows us to face even longer journeys, fully loaded, always with pleasure. Our Ridgeback Panoramas have already accompanied us for 2000km through the Balkans region, proving to be strong and fast in all situations we encountered: from the long Slovene bike paths to the remote unpaved road in the mountains of Serbia. Follow Riccardo and Chiara on their adventure Words & Photos Riccardo Rocchi forapieceofcake IDERS A journey by Chiara Ricciardi and Riccardo Rocchi / Riders Stories For a Piece of Cake The story of a journey on two Ridgeback Panoramas, The wheels rolling on the asphalt leave a trace on TORIES halfway between space and history, from Cesena (Italy) to Singapore, travelling in full autonomy. Chiara and Riccardo: we will cycle for more than 18,000km eastwards, until there is land, For a piece of cake. A slice of cake is an obvious pleasure for many but an achievement for others: Chiara suffers from type I diabetes and carbohydrates are an enemy to be defeated through insulin shots and by pushing on the pedals. As a matter of fact, exercise is fundamental for people suffering from type 1 diabetes, since it significantly reduces daily insulin requirement. Biking has never been a sport for us but rather a means of transport, a key to a slow and profound dimension where you are granted the time you need to measure yourself. We like to think of a bicycle as a combination of revolutions: the revolution of pedals and wheels, connecting our feet to the ground without touching it and connecting our effort with space. the road and one inside us: we will tell you about this trace through images and words. The months before we left we consumed our index finger on the pages of our atlas. With a slow and precise movement we caressed mountains and plains that, one page after the other, made us travel eastwards. The movement of our finger turned from an idea into a red line, both precise and imagined, connecting our hometown, Cesena, with faraway Singapore. Our research, commitment, the support of our partners and of Chiara s doctors contributed to turning that red line into reality. We studied the itinerary trying to avoid, whenever possible, cold and rainy weather, although in some cases we found intense heat. At least the weather we are going to find allowed us to travel light and carry very few winter garments. We are quite sure that sooner or later during this year on the saddle, we will find ourselves laughing and cursing at the same time because we ended up in the snow wearing only shorts and a tank top. Chiara Ricciardi (Cesena, 1989). I am Chiara, my pancreas stopped working correctly in 2001, when I was 11: type I diabetes. To encourage a family that was more scared than I was, I gave myself my first insulin shot. I have covered many kilometers since then: from university studies in Portugal to Australia, through the waves of Indonesia and the adobe houses of New Mexico, until I got my degree in building engineering in I like cakes, especially if I have to cycle around the world to eat them. Riccardo Rocchi (Cesena, 1983). I was born and raised in Via Valdagno, pulling wheelies looking at the playing field in front of my house and looked for grasshoppers in ditches. Today I am 33 and I am a photographer. I studied in Milan, worked in Rome and finished the pages of almost three passports: from Panama to Brunei, through Albania, Cambodia, Venezuela, China, Australia and many more. When I travel, I often happen to read the first page of the notebook where I take my notes, the page where you put your address in case your precious book was lost: Via Valdagno always reminds me of what it means to have roots, despite my constant cravings for nomadism.
