Paris Brest Paris: After the mother of all Brevets, we decided to create our new ROAD Race helmet with a special focus on comfort. I spent hours days, even sleepless in the saddle to conquer the 1,230 km. As each hour passes, every gram on your head gets heavier, every little pressure point hurts more, and webbing chafes mercilessly. Starting with the contact points where helmet meets head, to the new webbing dividers and the newly developed fit system, the RACE helmet feels as unobtrusive as a cap. So I can concentrate on my burning thigh muscles and finding the perfect line through the next hairpin bend without any distractions. 009

The fast and furious course is peppered with root sections and I need to stay fully focused and ready to take risks if I m to stay at the front. Our new Badger trail helmet is so versatile, it s ready for everything from tough races to transalpine crossings. We worked closely with our Action Team riders, dealers and customers to develop a helmet that meets every last one of your needs. Several uniformly distributed ventilation openings guarantee a cool head with room to safely attach headlamps and cameras using velcro straps. I might break a sweat on the gnarly trails but the Badger won t, thanks to antibacterial CoolMax pads. There s plenty of room to stow my goggles beneath the visor and the shell extends down towards the neck to offer dependable protection in tricky situations. 011

The rigid sole preserves every last ounce of energy and transfers the combined force of my muscles directly onto the drivetrain. Just a few metres to the descent now. I pull on the CUBE ratchet again for a really snug fit. The shoes feel like a second skin thanks to the low-profile ratchet and the CUBE elastic lacing. 17 HIGHLIGHTS HIGHLIGHTS T E C H N O L O G Y EVERY GREAT PRODUCT HAS A STORY THAT MAKES IT DISTINCTIVE. Hydration pack: check. Windbreaker and spare base layer: check. I stow my smartphone in the side pocket and quickly check my well-organised tool compartment before heading out. The first climb is tough going but great back ventilation and the EDGE TRAIL S slimline design make it more comfortable. Uh oh! I overcook it on the wet roots and crash but the back protector keeps me safe. The first lookout point is already here and my efforts are rewarded with fantastic views. I grab my smartphone from the easy-access pocket, post a snap to Instagram and jump back on the bike. 017

Ergonomic requirements were implemented to the exact millimetre with careful attention to detail, and state-of-the-art technical materials and manufacturing technology used for the best possible result. 018

And we ve wanted to ride that forest track at the halfway point for so long, so today we finally add the challenging detour into the woods to our route. The ascent is rougher and longer than we thought, but the perfect contrast to the road. No sign of tired hands or forearms thanks to the ergonomically optimised design and the tried-and-tested Shock X material we can still lift our beer mugs afterwards with no problems! 019

20 LIGHTS HPA 2000 Daniel Englbrecht, Product Design We wanted to set new standards in lighting, so we created the HPA 2000 front light. Our main focus was on obtaining the perfect beam, so we set about creating a brand-new lens geometry. The compact size and low weight of this high-end light, combined with the accessories included with delivery, make it the perfect companion for a multitude of sports and won t leave you in the dark. 020

Just a quick climb up to the summit followed by one or two drinks, and it s dark already. I snap the HPA 2000 on to my helmet, quickly check the battery status and head out into the dark night. One click of the remote control switches the light into high-power mode, ideal for higher speeds. The trail snakes through the trees, it s chilly but perfectly lit. The beam from the light follows as I glance over the last root section and then we re at the bottom already, back in civilisation. 021

28 TEAMLINE FEEL THE RUSH. Our race isn t won or lost over the last few metres. We work together the whole day, keeping the peloton in check and reeling back in the breakaway. It s not only about looking like a team, but acting as one, too. Then it s my turn at the front I battle against the wind, head down, hands in the drops, my gaze fixed on the stem and the team in my slipstream. 100 metres, 300 metres, and back out paceline formation. The Italian fabric and Skyving pad offer more comfort in the saddle for longer, and more comfort equals more energy throughout the race. The sun beats down and I m at my HRmax but my jersey and bib shorts stop me from overheating. 34 BLACKLINE LEGS AND STYLE ON POINT. The original idea was an easy after-work spin. But the group has other plans. Full gas from the start, we head out of the city and into the weekend. I barely notice the changeable weather my mobile phone is safely stowed in the waterproof pocket. The long-sleeved jersey keeps me well protected in all weathers. 46 AM SERIES RUN-OF-THE-TRAIL. It s 5.30 am on a Wednesday morning and just starting to get light outside. I can see it s drizzling as I look out of the window, so I grab my storm jacket, jump on the bike and head around the corner to meet the guys. Together, we traverse mist-covered fields and forest. Wearing my zipoff pants was a great idea. The double layer of fabric on the thigh keeps me comfortably snug. Bit by bit, we emerge from the forest and reach the look-out point. We take in the sunrise and tuck in to our packed breakfast. The fog clears with the sun and the day starts to warm up. We need to get going if we want to be at work on time. Lake Constance appears like an endless mirror and I can t wait to get out on the bike. My husband and I have a quick breakfast then it s time to go. 70 JUNIOR SERIES START SAFE, STAY SAFE. I proudly look down at my parents from the podium: My first ever cyclo-cross race and I won! The pad in the liner shorts designed especially for children was really comfortable and my kit shrugged off the crash at the start without a trace, which mum will be happy about when she washes it. The last few days have been mega exciting. Working with dad to get my bike in shape and checking out the course together. Even my outfit matches dad s. 74 AFTER RACE RELAX IN STYLE. The finish line is here: the last metre conquered. I stop, get off the bike and lean it against the crash barriers before dropping exhaustedly onto the grass. The blood still rushes in my ears, my heart races. The final sprint was tough but my training paid off. It couldn t have gone better. 80 BASELAYER WEATHER? WHAT WEATHER? We ve decided on our route, now we just have to select the right clothing and nutrition for the day. The forecast says it will be partly cloudy with no chance of rain. The route takes in 2,200 metres of climbing, which means 21 C in the valley and 8 C at the summit. Just 10 km until we cross the pass. I ve left my neck warmer at home but my choice of base layer was perfect. A few more metres and we re at the top next comes the fast bit: downhill! I just need to take a picture of the stunning sunrise over the mountains first. Then I jump back on the bike, zip up my jacket and off we go. The strong wind is bitterly cold. The two central philosophies are the general fit of the shell and the ability to make further adjustments according to head size. We developed the former on the basis of global anatomical studies, concentrating not only on the shape of the head, i.e. the ratio of length to width, but also the structure of the skull. Every helmet also needs a fit system for fine personal adjustments. Avoiding pressure points was a central focus of our development activities in this field, too. Additionally, we have researched the paths of larger blood vessels in the past and made great progress in the area of ergonomic design. Our fit systems allow you to stay in the saddle for hours at a time, without getting a headache. In particular we looked at the bone sutures. The large number of free nerve endings make these areas especially tender and much more sensitive to pressure.
