30 FORMULA 1 PIRELLI 2018 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX STOFFEL VANDOORNE For Stoffel Vandoorne, it became a question of when rather than if in his quest for racing in Formula One. That when occurred after he was called up from his reserve role to deputize for the injured Fernando Alonso on the McLaren team at Bahrain in Vandoorne began his motorsport career at six years old in 1998 and earned his first race and championship victories in national karting series. He went on to finish runner-u in the KF2 World Cup in During 2010, he went into the F4 Eurocup series scoring six victories as he wrapped up the title with two rounds in hand. He joined the McLaren Young Driver Program in 2013 after he became the vice-champion with four wins in the 3.5 series in F1 Team McLaren Car Number 2 Nationality Belgian Date of Birth 26 March 1992 Stoffel joined the McLaren team as their Formula One reserve for 2014 and combined that with a maiden GP2 campaign with ART. He ultimately finished second to Jolyon Palmer after four victories and 10 podiums. In a continuous momentum, Vandoorne proved to be unstoppable in 2015 as he solidified seven wins, 16 podiums, four pole positions, and five fastest laps as he landed the series title in dominant fashion. Vandoorne s Formula One debut came in early 2016, when, deputizing for Fernando Alonso, he scored a point in his one-off Sakhir outing. He combined his reserve role with a season in Japan s highly competitive Super Formula finishing fourth overall after two wins. His biggest prize of the year, however, was landing a full-time race drive with McLaren for 2017, stepping into the sizeable shoes of Jenson Button. As an F1 rookie, he scored 13 points to Spanish teammate Alonso s 17 in what was a tough final year of McLaren s revived Honda partnership - and duly retained his drive alongside the two-time champion for

31 JENSON BUTTON A veteran of 306 Formula 1 Grand Prix weekends, Jenson Button is a modern-day icon of motorsport. The 2009 World Champion grew up in the sport, maturing from a carefree youngster into a seasoned survivor whose perseverance paid off in a fairy tale finish with a team that came from nowhere. Championship Wins 2009 World Champion F1 Career Wins 15 Last Race 2017 Monaco Grand Prix Nationality English With many onlookers comparing him to the late world champion Ayrton Senna, Button took the 1998 British Formula Ford championship. A year later, he was quick and confident in testing one of multiple world champion Alain Prost s F1 cars. The result, an invitation to test a Williams F1 car, which ultimately landed. Button s winless record in F1 ended with a somewhat fortuitous first victory in the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix. Ineffective cars in the next two seasons kept him far away from the forefront and prompted Honda to make a shock withdrawal from the sport late in Then came the miraculous resurrection that began just three weeks before the first race of the new season with a management takeover led by team principal Ross Brawn. Against all the odds and expectations, the Brawn-Mercedes driven superbly by Jenson Button won six of the first seven races. Jenson steadily accumulated more than enough points to lead the standings all season long, clinching the driving title and helping secure the Constructors Championship for Brawn. Button s last appearance in an F1 car came in 2017 for McLaren-Honda (deputizing for Fernando Alonso), at Monaco, marking the end of his illustrious F1 career, in which he claimed 15 wins and 50 podiums in 305 Grands Prix. 31
