1 1 Volume 8 Issue 4 RODS & RELICS CAR CLUB NEWSLETTER April 2016 The Rods & Relics Car Club of Lincoln Hills is a non-profit organization formed by individuals with an interest in: The restoration, preservation and enjoyment of collector vehicles such as Original, Antiques, Classics, Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Special Interest, Modified, and other American or American-powered and older. We use this strong interest to facilitate fund raising and community service to Nonprofit organizations and people in need. JOIN US! Rods & Relics meet every 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:30 PM at STRIKES 5681 Lonetree Blvd Rocklin Everyone Is Welcome Our PRESIDENT S MESSAGE I m happy to be returning as your President, having served in this capacity from 2010 to My thanks to Ray Geiger for his many significant contributions to our Club and adding to our reputation of excellence! I am joined by individuals who bring seasoned experience to their positions and I look forward to working with them! Your new Board involves the following: George Funk, Vice President, elected to a new two-year term; Craig Kirkpatrick, Treasurer, with one year left on his term; Ed Branco, Secretary, elected to a new two-year term; Norm Penrice, Membership Director, with one year left on his term; Ray Geiger, Activities Director, completing a one-year opening; and Ed McVey, Member-At-Large, elected to fill a one-year term. Your Board will be holding a Planning Session at the Board meeting on April 18. It will be a time to discuss the expertise we each bring to our respective positions and to update our list of duties. You will be receiving a brief survey at the April 21 General Business Meeting. It is important for me to know your current preferences and suggestions. Under Ray Geiger s direction, you can plan on a wide variety of Car Shows and carrelated activities. Dust off your ride and plan to join our Club members as the season unfolds! Rich Ragan President

2 2 RODS & RELICS CAR CLUB MARCH 17, 2016 PRESIDENT RAY GEIGER Ray called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm, welcomed everyone and then announced that this is the Club s 10 Anniversary. This is the last meeting of Ray s term as President. He thanked the Board and membership for their support. Bill VanGundy has had open heart surgery Sandy Garcia is recovering from her surgery and should return home this weekend. CAR SHOW REPORT KENT PARSELL Kent reported the following: * 64 Car registrations are in * The Waffle Farm has raised their sponsorship from $500 to $1,000 * Allen Taylor has sent us many sponsors * Committees are all going OK * The next committee chairman s meeting will be at the VFW on April 13 th at 1:00 pm. SECRETARY S REPORT ED BRANCO Ed asked for a motion to approve the February meeting minutes located in the Newsletter on our web site. George Funk so moved and Al Alves seconded. Secretary s Report was approved. TREASURER S REPORT CRAIG KIRKPATRICK Craig reported the March 2016 month and year-to-date activity and balances for both the Club and Car Show accounts. We have $635 in Club merchandise. Contributions total $500 for the year and $114,829 to date. George Funk moved to approve the Treasurer s Report and Julie McVey seconded. The Treasurer s Report was approved. ACTIVITY REPORT RAY GEIGER Ray discussed the following shows: (Flyers are in the back of the room) Feel Good Shows and other club promoted shows March 19 Casa Roble High Auto Shop in Folsom March 20 Cars & Coffee, Nugget Market Center in Roseville April 16 Capital City Cruisers Spring Fling, Palladio, in Folsom April 20 Roseville Care Center, 1161 Cirby Way in Roseville April 30 Century 21 Car Show, 801 Sterling Parkway in Lincoln May 30 Mistywood Retirement Community where Bob Fish s dad is a resident. The Club promoted Downtown Woodland Car Show in Woodland and the Gold Rush Car Show in Oroville are both on May 7 th. (Please see our web site for other shows) Rich reported on a party that Al Alves plans to have at his car museum. Two dates were proposed and the members present selected Saturday July 9 th. The cost will be $15.00 each prepaid and a salad or dessert. Space is limited, so the first 60 guests who sign up will get in. There will be an open bar and Al will have a drawing to raffle off some of his trophies. More details to follow.

3 3 VICE PRESIDENT REPORT GEORGE FUNK George thanked our 5 members that came to help move books for the Friends of the Library book sale. Friends of the Library mentioned the Rods & Relics help in the letter section of the March 17th issue of the Lincoln News Messenger. MEMBERSHIP REPORT NORM PENRICE Norm reported that the guest prospective member present for his second meeting was Tony Verandes with his 1962 Corvette. Norm made sure everyone signed in. MEMBER AT LARGE REPORT RICH RAGAN See New Business. OLD BUSINESS None NEW BUSINESS Ed McVey discussed t-shirt colors and plans to sell the tee shirts for $12.00 to Club members and $15.00 to non-club members. Ed also sells Club hats $15.00 to $17.00 each. He plans to sell black t- shirts to Club members, only if he gets enough interest. Dan Larsen displayed some and described other Club wearing apparel that he sells. He will be sending out information and order forms for purchasing again in the Fall. 10 th Anniversary Celebration will follow the meeting. Original charter members present are Murrill Conley, Dan Larsen and Ed & Julie McVey. Bill VanGundy was not able to attend due to his surgery and Sue Ernst was away. Julie has done exceptional work for the Club including being on the Board, writing, editing and publishing the Newsletter for the last ten years! Thank you Julie! With no further business to discuss, Ray Geiger asked for a motion to adjourn. Ed McVey so moved and Tom Kirkbride seconded. The meeting adjourned at 7:15 pm. President Ray Geiger handed over the gavel to newly elected President Rich Ragan. THANKS FOR A GREAT JOB RAY! Our 10 th Anniversary Celebration began with a beautiful cake. 4 4 CASA ROBLE HIGH SCHOOL CAR SHOW Ed McVey Saturday morning, March 19th, I cruised over to Orangevale, to the Casa Roble High School Car Show. What I like about this show is the hours are from 9 AM to 2 PM and it is just a 20 minute drive! The show attracts around 250 cars plus and you don t have to be there at 7 AM. I got there around 8:45 and there were plenty of parking spots. The weather was great! Besides myself, Bob Fish, Gary McCoig and Murrill Conley represented our Club. Guess which one of us took home a trophy! You probably guessed right so I am not going to tell you. They gave out about 15 trophies, took all of 15 minutes to do it and I was home by 2:45. This show is a little different from most shows we go to. All cars and trucks, new and old, U.S. or foreign-made are all parked together. You get to see a lot of new stuff, Camaros, Mustangs, Jaguar and even a Maseratti. Dave s Dawgs was there along with a taco truck and a BBQ set up, with coffee and donuts in the morning. Also convenient indoor restrooms a nice touch. The judging was done by teens from Casa Roble High School. It was rather odd to see a kid with a clip board instead of a Cell phone in their hand. It is a good show, laid back, easy in and out. I liked it and will be going next year.

5 5 IN THE HEADLIGHTS Hi. My name is Tom Ware and I am in my first year of membership in the club. A little about me, I was born a baby boomer in Huntington IN to Worth and Beulah Ware. We traveled a bit as dad was in advertising for General Motors. We enjoyed some side benefits to that as dad was always bringing home different cars and we went to auto shows. The GM Motoramas were especially interesting for a lad of my tender years. I went to school mostly in Wisconsin and Illinois. My first car was a 1940 Olds two-door sedan. We paid $60 for it off a used car lot on Cicero Ave. in Chicago. I never did drive it because I was 13 at the time and my folks bought it for me so I could "tinker" with it! After University of Illinois, I stayed in Champaign, IL and worked for a Pontiac dealer where I became the high performance specialist. Sold, traded for, and drove a lot of pretty neat cars. Moved to Denver, CO for a few years, then on to So Cal. Have stayed in California ever since. My real passion has always been for just about anything with an engine. My wife and I have had a number of great cars over the years GTO convertible, 1970 Dodge Challenger RT convertible, 1961 Chrysler 300G convertible, 1970 Pontiac Trans Am, 1972 Olds 442 convertible plus the imports. I went through a Brit car and motorcycle phase starting with a Triumph Spitfire on through Austin- Healy's with an occasional MG thrown in for good measure. I still have one motorcycle, a 2000 Harley Dyna Super Glide Sport after many bikes. We currently have a 2013 Porsche Boxster S plus wife's Lexus SUV, Toyota Solara convertible and the 1962 Corvette. Oh yeah- a golf cart, too! I have to say that I think Rods and Relics suits me to a "T" not just because of the cars, but the folks I have met. I have been (and still am) a member of numerous car and motorcycle clubs over the years and Rods and Relics folks have been most welcoming. Tom Tom s 62 Corvette SAFETY ALERT Kent brought to my attention that there have been numerous reports of door being kicked in throughout Sun City Lincoln Hills. To help stop this, key word help, we should have screws that are in the neighborhood of 3 to 4 inches long on the strike plates of all doors that allow access to the outside. Apparently, Del Webb and /or Pulte used much shorter screws in some/all homes. I found some stubby little guys in the striker plates for our front door and side door of the garage, which I replaced with screws that reach into the studs that frame the door opening. If you have not yet had the ones in your striker plate checked (and replaced if required), please do so now, by calling Neighbors In Deed at (916) , Mon- Fri 9 AM - 5 PM. Planning Ahead Cloverdale is planning for their 23rd annual Car & Motorcycle Show, September 9th is the Cruise on the boulevard along with a dance. Saturday the 10th, over 200 classic cars and motorcycles will line the boulevard. There will be fun for the whole family. Registration is now open, forms are on the web. Pre-Registration is $35 for the first vehicle, the 2nd vehicle is $25, the 3rd is $10 and 4th is free. They also have free tours to the Geysers, many vendors and local tourist attractions, plus a Dance and Tri tip Barbeque. Sounds like a fun weekend. If you go, take notes!
