Presidents Page Birch Entriken Bill Rogers photo My replacement has arrived! As I write this my son is just over 48 hours old. Things in my household are a little hectic, so pardon me if I keep this one short and sweet. I'm already a day behind deadline. With 25 entries we have a shot at a full field this year. There are still a number of pilot quals to finish up. We have limited time on Sunday the 9th for this. A couple of pilots are planning on arriving a day or two early to complete quals, and that is ideal. We will have someone available for observation if you choose this route. Otherwise, if you plan on doing it Sunday, be sure you have practiced and can nail it the first time, as there simply won't be time for a do over. The RV lot is as popular as ever. Our traditional area is full and we have been allotted additonal spaces to the north.. The good news is that the view of the races is better from there The bad news is that these spaces are not on our power/water grid. Still just a short walk to the hangar though. As John mentions in his column, we are short a couple of nominations right now. We don't have anyone up for Secretary/Treasurer or Promotions Director. This organization doesn't run on autopilot. We need someone to step up to the plate and fill these positions. Yes, they take a certain amount of work. But if we want to keep racing we need management to run the house. Even if you have accepted the nomination for a different position, please let us know if either of these jobs would interest you. We can make adjustments. That's it from me. See you next month. Fly fast! Birch Entriken bentriken@earthlink.net Operations Brief Bob Bement Bill Rogers Photo It is time to Race! All the work and long hours in the past year in preparing and the time is here. For those of you who know me, my first priority is always SAFETY. Remember there is always tomorrow if everything is not right today. Remember all competing aircraft are to be equipped with a VHF radio; demonstration of functionality will be required during Qualification. The Operations Director or Race Control may communicate with competing aircraft at their discretion. Please read Reno Rules of Competition, including the points system. Also plan on attending the Mandatory Briefing th on Sunday, Sept 9, 0800hrs (i.e.; NO SHOW, NO FLY). Review/ Refresh Race Procedures: Position aircraft on runway so you have room to go between the aircraft in front of you - (aborted takeoff) Flags During Race Yellow- Caution, continue racing Red -Vacate course, race cancelled Black- Individual aircraft is disqualified White Last lap Checkered- Race finished Flagging Procedures For Start 10 minutes - Once aircraft all in position FORMULA FORUM, SEPTEMBER

5 minutes - Red flag is up 2 minutes - Crews leave aircraft 1 minute - Red flag down Green up Starter s discretion to drop Green Flag and start race in that 1 minute. No Start( Engine) At 1 minute, pull aircraft off the side of runway, possibly into the dirt. You can continue propping. If started, and if SAFE to get your airplane in position, you can start the race. Reminder- engine and oil will be cold, and consider reason for not starting in the first place, (remember you can always race tomorrow). Aborted Takeoff - Roll out straight ahead as far as possible. Wait for all aircraft to pass by before exiting with your aircraft. Pull aircraft to COLD SIDE of runway if possible, and wait for crew to pick you up. Race Over - Cross Home Pylon, clear yourself and pull up inside race course gently to gain altitude. Follow in trail in the cool down, be predictable. Wing wag downwind and base legs. Landing - Th leading pilot will usually land on the same runway as takeoff, but it is the pilot s discretion however. Keep pattern close to airport. If a different runway is chosen, announce intentions if possible, and make sure runway is clear. Be aware a mayday aircraft may have chosen same runway or the rest of the field may be landing in the opposite direction. Looking forward to seeing everybody at Reno. Have a safe trip (and don t forget to safety check your trailers before hitting the road). Be safe, Bob Hot Side/ Cold Side - Hot Side is always farthest from crown line no matter which runway is used. Always land Hot Side, get aircraft under control and transition to Cold Side. Don t get slow on Hot Side. Clear taxiway up onto ramp and spread out. Crew will pick up and take you back. Taxi back is ok, but be careful of people and airplanes. Take Off - Front row must hold line st until past Home Pylon. 1 lap starts st when 1 aircraft crosses Home Pylon, nd the 2 time by. May Day - Pull up inside race course and gain altitude. Be alert for other aircraft. Fly the airplane first, get yourself under control, and deal with the problem. Never turn toward the crowdline, EVER. Use any runway. Use radio if needed; Emergency Crews will respond. 4 FORMULA FORUM, SEPTEMBER 2007

Teaching an Old Dog Smokey Young If you were at PRS this year, you may have noticed a new blue and white Formula 1 on the course. Rolled out of its trailer late Wednesday night she was assembled under a veil of secrecy in Pat Gleason s Stead Skunk Works hangar. The crew labored through the night and into the next afternoon to get her ready for first flight. At 5:00PM Thursday, after the field reopened to general traffic she took to the sky slipping out of the pattern to do air work and confirm all systems were operating normally. Upon landing she was quickly wheeled back into Pat s hangar and locked away from prying eyes. On Friday morning she came out again, did a couple turns on the course with the rookies and then landed. As quickly as she had arrived at Reno, she was gone. Disassembled and placed on her trailer the airplane was whisked back to Southern California Friday afternoon. The plane you saw at PRS and also graced the cover of the July 2007 Forum really isn t new or some secret weapon. She is actually a familiar sight to those of you who have been around air racing for the past several years. The airplane is the Western Air Race Special which has been racing at Reno since Until this past November the airplane was owned by George Budde who raced it as #2. She is now back as race #3 with new owners, a new paint job and a new name, Sly Dog. My rookie year was 2003 when I showed up at Reno in a fairly stock Cassutt and ran a respectable third in the Bronze. The racing bug bit hard. I was overcome by a maniacal desire to go faster and be more competitive. Unfortunately this desire manifested itself in a complete teardown of a decent airplane which kept me out of racing for two years and resulted in only a 15 m/h speed increase. As the 2006 races came to a close, I realized that continuing to race Zarrina would mean either more major modification or perennially running at the back of the pack. Neither option was appealing. There is an old saying; Friends will help you move. Real friends will help you move a body. I think that should be changed to Real friends will help you race an airplane. I first met Rob and Nancy Sobczak back in We were neighbors and they actually helped me move into the condo next door to them. Over the years we became good friends. Rob and Nancy first came to Reno in 2005 as sponsors for Zarrina. The air race bug bit them hard too. Both are licensed pilots and love exotic airplanes and the spirit of camaraderie that exists in Formula 1. They were back in 2006 as crew and sponsors for Zarrina. They shared my disappointment in the minimal performance gains #77 had made but they had a more palatable solution. Up until 2006, I had been a one man show. This made aircraft modification time consuming and difficult. Rob and Nancy proposed that we form a partnership with each FORMULA FORUM, SEPTEMBER

of us contributing to the team what we do best. We formed Sly Air Racing, the word Sly being based on the initials of the three partners; Robert Sobczak, Nancy Laning Sobczak and Richard (Smokey) Young. Next we took a good hard look at Zarrina. Getting her out of the Bronze and to the top of the Silver, maybe even the Gold would be a huge task. We felt a better option was to buy a new airplane that was already competitive in the faster heats. Several were considered. My six foot tall frame kept us out of one and unavailability until 2008, kept us away from another. Then I remembered George Budde s #2. I always thought it was one of the prettiest airplanes in IF1. It didn t race in 2006, and I had heard through the grapevine that George might be willing to sell her. A little research showed the airplane had last qualified at Reno with a speed of 215 m/h. Not exactly the performance we were looking for. However, a check of race records back to 1984 showed that she had regularly run in the high 220 s and had qualified one year at 235 m/h. I felt the airplane had potential. A long drive from Los Angeles to Oklahoma City confirmed that I could fit in the airplane and that she was in good shape to race. Rob, Nancy and I bought her. Once back in California the airplane was bolted together and I started to fly her. The airplane easily accommodates my 6 foot tall frame however, my 200lbs girth is another issue. The airplane is very narrow. I fit in her just fine but it is a snug fit. In the air the airplane handles beautifully. It has excellent directional stability making takeoff and landing a non event. In flight, she is pitch sensitive like most other racers. Going over the airplane, we uncovered the need for some muchneeded tender loving care. Once I got comfortable flying her she was disassembled to begin a series of projects that would run from late November 2006 until the Tuesday prior to PRS. The fiberglass needed a lot of attention. Over the years areas had cracked and either been patched or ignored. We had the cowlings removed and reworked. Doing this, uncovered an interesting surprise. Over the years the airplane had been painted several times. However, the airplane had never been stripped prior to each successive paint job. As a consequence, we uncovered eight layers of paint on the airplane!!! The airplane was taken to a professional paint shop where it was stripped to its bare surfaces. She was then repainted in her current livery. We also removed the engine and replaced it with the one that had powered Zarrina. Finally a Microline radio and new tach were installed which required installation of a new instrument panel. Most of the work was completed just prior to PRS. The late night arrival, secret hangar and whisking away were the result of schedule not subterfuge. The airplane left the paint shop Tuesday afternoon and was loaded into the trailer. The next day, Wednesday, I began the 10 hour 6 FORMULA FORUM, SEPTEMBER 2007

drive to Reno. The RARA hangar was closed for my late night arrival, so Pat Gleason graciously offered the use of his hangar for assembly that evening. We were on a tight schedule since I had to leave Saturday morning for a business trip to Europe. Pat Gleason and Ed Dutreaux put the airplane together for me. Thanks so much guys!!! Rob and Nancy were there and greatly assisted the operation by telling me to stay away from the airplane and let Pat and Ed do their job. Gary Dalleske arrived Thursday morning to help with final fit and inspection. The airplane flew again Thursday evening and performed flawlessly. Friday morning we got the airplane on the course for two quick practice sessions. After landing, my fabulous crew took her apart and loaded her on the trailer. She was gone by 2:00PM Friday. Rob, Nancy and I each contribute our own talents to the success of Team Dog. One of the more noticeable aspects of this collaboration can be seen on the aircrafts tail. All of the artwork and team logos were designed and drawn by Rob. In addition, the creative use of aircraft contrails to outline the racing number was also his creation. Come by our pit this year and check it out. As I said earlier, the reason we didn t show her off a little more at PRS this year was totally due to schedule. My big disappointment was not being able to spend much time with all the great F1 folks who were there helping with Rookie School. So come on by and see us. Sly Dog may be an old dog but I think we ve taught her some new tricks. Smokey Smokey rolling in Sly Dog Birgitta Nurmi Photo FORMULA FORUM, SEPTEMBER

Tech Tips Tom DeHart Bill Rogers Photo Well, once again it is time for Reno. Everyone should be ready with their airplanes and have tried them out by now. We will be starting inspections at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday September 8. Even with our budget cut this year you will still get a full inspection of your airplane as usual. There are a few requirements that we need you to go by to make inspect-ions as smooth and fast as possible. Please have your name on the inspection sign up sheet only WHEN YOU ARE READY TO BE INSPECTED. It will be on a first come first serve basis. The only exception is if you are a rookie or you have a brand new plane. picking a wild card as we always have. This is to keep everyone on their toes knowing their aircraft may be subject to post race inspection. This is an air race not a fly in. Everyone is given plenty of notice if you are the wild card. It should be no shock to anyone and time is available to prepare for it. If you have nothing to hide, then you should not mind having it inspected. I know you want to pack up and go home on the last day- as do I, but it does not take long and you and/or your crew chief can be present. Hope to see everyone there. Be safe, Tom Please make sure that all fuel is out of your plane. You must fuel at Reno with a Tech inspector waching. If you must empty the fuel out of your plane, please DO NOT do it in the hangar. We are still having problems with people emptying tanks or storing fuel in the hangar. Please remove one spark plug from each cylinder. All spinners must be on props. Check with tech. as to which cylinder is to be inspected; you need to have the rocker cover and baffling out of the way on that cylinder. Make sure to have all of your paperwork in order to be checked off. I would hate to have someone travel all that way and have a problem with the paperwork. There has been some debate over the issue of the wild card. We will still be 12 FORMULA FORUM, SEPTEMBER 2007

Secretary/Treasurer Input ominations for the 2008 Leadership John Housley Nand Committee member positions have been tallied and the results will be provided to full members in an upcoming mail ballot. Ballots must be received by the Secretary by 10 September if sent by return mail, or provided in person by 12 September at the Reno races. Two key positions, the Secretary/Treasurer and Promotions John Garrett photo Chairperson, are currently open on the ballot. These will be filled by the Board of Directors in accordance with our bylaws. If you would like to volunteer for either of these, please contact a member of the Board. Bylaw changes to reduce cost/facilitate voting and provide more time for the Procedure/Tech rules committees to evolve changes were approved by the membership. Updated Bylaws are available on the IF1 web site ( Our annual general meeting will be held at Reno on Wednesday, 12 September, This meeting normally begins at 3:00 and runs until about 5:00 unless flying schedules or other events dictate a change. We ll plan to review the state of the corporation, financial results, outlook for future races, and open the floor to membership questions and suggestions to improve the experience of being an IF1 member and racing at Reno. Please come prepared with some constructive ideas for your organization. We ll have leased a trailer to sell IF1 merchandise at Reno this year. It would be a big help to Smokey if many people helped man the point of sale for a few hours during the week rather than expecting a few dedicated souls to carry the load for the entire group. Please lend a hand in the trailer, especially if your team is selling merchandise there as well. Looking forward to seeing everyone again at Reno. 14 Odds and th This month s logo for the 60 Anni- versary of Formula One/Goodyear Racing is the second by Victor Archer. For graphics work contact him at aaphotography.com. In spite of the fact that USPS has changed the postage rates, we decided to bite the bullet and pay more for oversize mail so that we can deliver the Forum in the same condition as before. Congratulations to President Birch Entriken and his lovely wife Nadia on the arrival of a baby boy, Joseph Skylar Entriken, on Friday, August 10. Joey arrived at 11:15pm and weighed 5lbs 5oz. Mother and baby doing fine. Joe is looking forward to his first air races. Our sympathies go out to the families and friends of Unlimited Mustang pilots John McKittrick and Gerry Beck who were killed recently in landing accidents at Camarillo and Oshkosh. Midget Mustang Race # 8 pilot, Larry Hardy, from Colorado had a successful 24 minute first flight on August 2nd, not quite early enough to be ready for Reno. Dan Chrapczynski was not so lucky on th his first flight on July 16 with Horse Power when the engine failed on takeoff. Dan was able to put the plane down without damage to himself but the gear was torn off and will take some time to repair. He credits the PRS with good training on how to handle the emergency. If you are selling merchandise like tee shirts at the IF1 booth, remember to put labels on them per Smokey Young s article in our last issue. IF1 Fifty Years Ago From 1949 to 1960 the only group that kept air racing alive in the United States was the Goodyear Midget racers. From 1961 to 1963 no races were held at all, until F1 racer Bill Stead, started the Reno Air races at Sky Ranch in In 1957 two Formula races were held, the first in August at Oshkosh, WI, which was won by Steve Wittman (for the S.J.Wittman Trophy) with Tom Cassutt second and Bill Falck third. The second event, held over the Labor day weekend at Fort Wayne, IN, was won by Bill Falck from Steve Wittman and Tom Cassutt. Jim Miller was 6th. Another good year for Formula One. The entry list for this year s Reno should be a challenge for the historians. Several aircraft have changed hands and their new owners have changed race numbers, paint schemes and, in a couple of instances, registrations. Swedish aircraft became American, and American aircraft became Canadian. An aircraft that last raced in 1972 returns and another reverts to the registration that it was originally raced under -I think!
