3 Dear Members of the Media: Welcome to the Roar by the Shore the 43rd Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. We've designed this media guide to assist you throughout the weekend, whether it be to reference historical data, information on this year's event or information and statistics on our six weekend races. It also includes a section on transportation, hotels and restaurants to make your stay in Long Beach more efficient and enjoyable. Our three-day weekend is packed with activities on and off the track. In addition to the racing, two concerts will take place: on Friday night at 6:45 p.m., the Tecate Light Fiesta Friday concert will feature popular Mexican rock band "Moderatto," while on Saturday night, "SMG Presents Kings of Chaos Starring Billy Idol, Billy Gibbons and Chester Bennington" will entertain the Grand Prix crowd at the Rock-N-Roar Concert. The Lifestyle Expo, located in the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, will see more than 180,000 Grand Prix fans walk through multiple times. Our annual media luncheon takes place on Thursday, April 6, and will feature drivers from many of the racing series that will be here over the weekend. 8 WHAT: The 43rd Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, featuring the second round of the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series. WHEN: Friday through Sunday, April 7-9. WHERE: THE CIRCUIT: ATTENDANCE: WHO: The streets of downtown Long Beach surrounding the Long BeachConvention and Entertainment Center and encompassing the Aquarium of the Pacific and a portion of the Pike at Rainbow Harbor complex. The start/finish line is on Shoreline Drive miles in length, 11-turn temporary street circuit. The weekend event draws more than 180,000 spectators making it one of the largest paid spectator special events in Southern California. The featured race is Sunday afternoon s Verizon IndyCar Series event, which features an international field of world-class drivers expected to include: defending race and Series champion Simon Pagenaud; Long Beach winners Scott Dixon, Will Power, Takuma Sato, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Helio Castroneves and Sebastien Bourdais, along with Graham Rahal and James Hinchcliffe. Series will have cars with turbocharged engines and aero kits supplied by Honda and Chevrolet. Five other racing events will be run. SUPPORT RACES: BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach: Features the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with three classes: the all-new Daytona Prototypes (DPi), GT Le Mans (GTLM) and the addition of the GT Daytona (GTD) sports car class. Practice and qualifying will be held on Fri., April 7, and the race will run early Sat. afternoon, April 8. Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge: The popular Formula DRIFT invitational competition, taking place Friday and Saturday nights, always attracts huge crowds! Expected to feature 16 of the sport s top cars and drivers. Practice and eliminations will take place both nights! SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks Race: On Sat., April 8 and Sun., April 9, the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Truck Series will bring its 600-horsepower V-8 engine trucks in 20-minute races featuring jumps and lots of excitement. Pirelli World Challenge Championship: Two classes (GT, GT-A) of sports cars from famous marques like Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, Cadillac, Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren battle fender-tofender on Sun., April 9 before the IndyCar race. Can-Am Challenge: New for 2017, these classic horsepower cars from Can-Am s golden era, , will race on the streets for the first time. 14 Race Circuit Has Changed Nine Times Since First Race in 1975 The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach race circuit has changed considerably since Brian Redman took the race's first checkered flag in 1975 directly across from a seedy collection of X-rated theaters and abandoned buildings! Today, the 1.97-mile, 11-turn circuit winds its way around and under gleaming hotels, a famed Convention and Entertainment Center, a popular Aquarium and the Pike at Rainbow Harbor complex. That first race circuit measured 2.02 miles in length and featured the famous "Linden Leap," when cars would barrel down Ocean Blvd., then turn hard right onto Linden - occasionally becoming airborne in the process! The circuit stayed at 2.02 miles until 1982, when the Queen's Hairpin gave way to a series of new turns to accommodate construction of the Hyatt Hotel, upping the circuit length to miles. Construction altered it again in 1983, to miles, taking the cars off Ocean Blvd. for the first time. When Indy cars arrived at Long Beach in 1984, the circuit was shortened to 1.67 miles in length, then was shortened again to miles until That year, the 25th Anniversary of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach saw a revamped, 1.85-mile circuit, with a longer front stretch on Shoreline Drive and new Turn 1, winding past the new Aquarium of the Pacific. 17 LIFESTYLE EXPO: It's the perfect "pit stop" for fun...and the ideal place to take a break for some food, drink or just soaking up the racing atmosphere. Adults and kids can turn some hot laps at the K1 Speed Kart Track (located across from the Expo entrance atop the Arena Parking Garage) wheeling speedy electric karts around a twisting, turning circuit (minimum driver height: 4'10"). Inside the Convention Center, visit the Expo's Family Fun Zone, complete with video games, displays and KidRacer electricpowered cars for kids ages 4-6 to test their racing skills. The Expo also features special displays of many of the historic cars that have raced on Long Beach's celebrated street circuit. And, at 3 p.m. Saturday in Room 103 on the Promenade, you can get the autographs of famed Can-Am series driver George Follmer! There will also be a free autograph session featuring drivers in the Pirelli World Challenge race. Whirling and twirling fun and excitement comes courtesy of giant, padded Bubble Rollers, which you can enjoy on a special oval track inside the arena or outside, on the lagoon near Turn 6 and the Hyatt Hotel. Dance Masters, a nationwide organization dedicated to advancing the art of dancing, returns to do a wide variety of dances and may even invite YOU to join them and try a few steps! The Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge, Can-Am Challenge and Pirelli World Challenge paddocks/garages are located in the Arena/Family Fun Zone area, as is the Verizon IndyCar Fan Village. And, the Lifestyle Expo is the perfect spot to pick up great souvenirs from the 43rd Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. 18 Emerson Fittipaldi, Tommy Kendall To Be Inducted Into Long Beach Motorsports Walk Of Fame 12th Annual Induction Ceremony is April 6 During Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Week The Long Beach Motorsports Walk of Fame will honor Emerson Fittipaldi and Tommy Kendall at its 12th annual induction ceremony, scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, April 6 on Pine Ave. in front of the Convention Center. Fittipaldi raced 18 times on the streets of Long Beach in F/One, CART, Champ Car and IndyCar World Series cars and was twice a runner-up in his five podium finishes. A two-time Formula One World Champion (1972, 1974), Fittipaldi also won the Indianapolis 500 twice (1989, 1993) and was the CART Indy Car World Series Champion in Kendall was a four-time Trans-Am Series champion, finishing 2nd here in 1987 and winning the following year at Del Mar. He also finished 4th overall in the 2002 Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race. Kendall had a dominating year in 1997, winning the Trans-Am crown with 11 straight victories, losing only the last two races of the season. 19 2016 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach: Simon Pagenaud Triumphs in Closest-Finish, Fastest-Ever Long Beach IndyCar race Fans at the 42nd Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach certainly got their money's worth! To begin with, it was the closest finish in race history, with a victory margin of only of a second. It was also the fastest, averaging mph. And, it kick-started race winner Simon Pagenaud's road to capturing the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Championship. Pagenaud, driving the #22 Team Penske Chevrolet, edged 2015 series champion Scott Dixon in the #9 Chip Ganassi Chevrolet for his first 2016 win and his fifth career Verizon Indy Car Series victory. He went on to win four more races and seven pole positions for his first series title. This is my favorite street course, said Pagenaud, a two-time winner in sports car races on the mile temporary street course, but who took his first Indy car victory here today. To win here, especially in INDYCAR, given the level of competition, is amazing. "I knew the wins were coming because we ve been so competitive since the beginning of the year, Pagenaud added. I knew I could win races. It s not my first win; I ve been around. It was just a matter of when and it s when we were going to put ourselves in that position. Starting the 80-lap race third, Pagenaud took his first lead on Lap 52 when teammate and pole sitter Helio Castroneves made his final pit stop. Pagenaud lasted two more laps before pitting for fuel and tires, exiting the pits just ahead of Dixon and Castroneves. He led the final 25 laps to take the checkered flag. It was the first Verizon IndyCar Series caution-free race since Mid-Ohio in August 2013 and the first completely green-flag race on the streets of Long Beach since Behind Dixon, Castroneves finished third in the #3 Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet, leading a race-high 47 laps. 20 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Highlights, More than 46,500 fans invaded the streets of Long Beach to watch Brian Redman capture the inaugural edition of the Long Beach Grand Prix in Jim Hall's T-332 Boraxo Lola. The win - by seconds over Vern Schuppan (Jorgensen Eagle) - clinched the F5000 title for Redman. Eppie Wietzes was third in a Formula Racing Lola Polesitter Clay Regazzoni steered his Ferrari clear of early-race attrition and went on to win the first Formula One race held on the streets of Long Beach. More than 60,000 fans saw Regazzoni's Ferrari teammate, Niki Lauda, finish second and Patrick Depailler (ELF Tyrrell) third The race produced the famous "James Hunt airborne" image - as well as Mario Andretti's win, the first by an American in a U.S. Grand Prix. Andretti (John Player Lotus) edged Lauda (Ferrari) by.773 seconds before 65,000 in the race that helped solidify the race's future. Jody Scheckter (Wolf Ford) was third A mid-race mistake by Gilles Villeneuve handed the lead - and the win - to Ferrari teammate Carlos Reutemann, who went on to beat Mario Andretti (John Player Lotus) to the checkered flag by 11 seconds in a race that started on Shoreline Drive, rather than Ocean Blvd., for the first time. Patrick Depailler again finished third in the ELF Tyrrell Villeneuve was fast qualifier in his Ferrari and ran a mistake-free race for the victory as only nine F/One cars completed the race. It was the debut of the soon-to-be-dominant 1.5-liter turbo Renaults, which practiced and qualified but did not race because of broken driveshafts. Jody Scheckter (Ferrari) and Alan Jones (Saudia/Williams) shared the podium with Villeneuve Brazil's Nelson Piquet was fastest right off the truck, being first to break the 1:18 mark in qualifying (1:17.694). Piquet piloted his Parmalat Brabham to the fastest race lap ever (1:19.83) and went on to a 49-plus-seconds win over Ricardo Patrese and his Penthouse Arrows, with Emerson Fittipaldi third in a Skol/Fittipaldi Amid a bitter, behind-the-scenes F/One political squabble, more than 82,000 race day spectators saw Alan Jones in his Albilad Williams outdistance teammate Carlos Reutemann and Nelson Piquet (Parmalat Brabham), as only eight cars finished the race. Mario Andretti (Marlboro Alfa Romeo) was fourth Niki Lauda roared back from a three-year retirement to qualify second and take his first F/One victory since 1978 in a Marlboro McLaren. Keke Rosberg (TAG Williams) was second and Gilles Villeneuve third but was later disqualified for his Ferrari's staggered wing. 21 1984 A new era dawned at Long Beach as CART cars replaced the more-costly-to-stage F/One machinery. But one thing stayed constant: Mario Andretti was still the guy to beat! He won in a Budweiser Lola, becoming the race's first two-time winner and the first to win in both F/One and CART livery as he beat Geoff Brabham's Kraco March to the checkered flag by more than a minute. Tom Sneva (Texaco March) was third Fuel economy was the deciding factor. Polesitter Mario Andretti held off some early challenges to win handily in his Beatrice Lola but, behind him, hard-charging Danny Sullivan (Miller March) ran out of fuel a scant 120 yards short of the finish line, handing second place to Emerson Fittipaldi and his 7-Eleven March Two up-and-coming youngsters - Michael Andretti (Kraco/STP March) and Al Unser Jr. (Domino's Pizza Lola) - gave a hint of things to come in front of 77,500 fans, dueling through the final laps before Andretti edged Unser at the checkered flag by only 0.38 seconds or 44 feet! Another offspring, Geoff Brabham, snuck his Valvoline Lola by Tom Sneva for third place Ilmor-Chevrolet power ruled the streets of Long Beach as Mario Andretti grabbed the pole and, on race day, ran away and hid in his Hanna Lola. His victory margin over Al Unser Jr. (Domino's Pizza March) was a phenomenal one lap-plus seconds, or almost 2.5 miles! Tom Sneva (Skoal Bandit March) finished third and Michael Andretti was fourth, nearly 3.25 miles behind his father "Little Al" Unser came up big and went Mario Andretti one better, winning his first Long Beach race by one lap plus 33 seconds, leading for 73 of the race's 95 laps in his Valvoline March. More than 84,000 fans watched as Bobby Rahal (Budweiser Lola) and Kevin Cogan (Schaefer/Playboy March) followed Unser Jr. across the finish line It was Little Al for the second year in a row but this time his win wasn't quite so popular! Dicing with Mario Andretti in the closing laps, Unser locked his brakes and spun Andretti off-course in Turn 3. Unser went on to win in his Valvoline Lola by 12 seconds over Michael Andretti (K/Mart/Havoline Lola) and Emerson Fittipaldi (Marlboro Penske), but was greeted by a hearty chorus of boos on his victory lap Al Unser Jr. made it three in a row in the Valvoline Lola, but it was Michael Andretti who won the lion's share of the kudos. Starting 5th on the grid, Andretti spun out on lap 2 and fell to the rear of the field. He then methodically worked his way back up through the pack and crossed the finish line in 4th place to thunderous applause. 22 1993 While Michael Andretti went to F/One, Nigel Mansell came over to CART, won the Long Beach pole in his first try and went on to finish third in his Kmart/Texaco Lola behind race winner Paul Tracy - his first-ever CART victory - and runner-up Bobby Rahal (Miller Rahal/Hogan). Tracy logged a 12-second margin of victory in his Marlboro Penske After 36 years of racing and four Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach wins, Mario Andretti ended his career on the legendary seaside circuit with a 5th place finish in a Kmart/Scotch/Havoline Lola. Al Unser Jr. got back on the victory trail in a Marlboro Penske, winning by 39 seconds over Nigel Mansell (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Lola) and Robby Gordon (Valvoline/Cummins Lola) Ho hum. Another Al Unser Jr. triumph - his 6th - came on the race's 20th anniversary as he and his Marlboro Penske outlasted early leaders Michael Andretti, Paul Tracy and Gil de Ferran. Unser finished more than 23 seconds ahead of Scott Pruett (Patrick Racing Lola) and Teo Fabi (Indeck Reynard) Gil de Ferran snagged the pole and led 99 of the first 100 laps before a faulty hose slowly robbed him of power. He ultimately finished fifth as a succession of incidents (some earning hefty driver fines!) yielded the lead to Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard). Vasser went on to a 3.4-second win over Parker Johnstone (Motorola Reynard) and Al Unser Jr., (Marlboro Penske) It was a year of change featuring new drivers, chassis and engines and 2/3 of the starting field from outside the U. S! Alex Zanardi, driving Chip Ganassi's Target/Honda captured the victory in a race that featured seven lead changes. Mauricio Gugelmin (Hollywood Mercedes) and Scott Pruett (Brahma Ford) rounded out an all-reynard chassis podium Seven full-course cautions marred Bobby Rahal's last Long Beach race (he finished 17th) and Zanardi's second straight win as the top 14 finishers piloted Reynard chassis. Zanardi (Target Honda) took the checkered flag two-plus seconds ahead of Dario Franchitti (KOOL Honda) and Bryan Herta, who led for 26 laps in his Shell Ford Rookie Juan Montoya burst onto the CART scene with a convincing win in the 25th Anniversary of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in front of more than 102,000 fans. Montoya's win - in only his third race - featured a 2.8-second margin of victory over Dario Franchitti (KOOL Honda/Reynard) that was close only because of a yellow flag with eight laps remaining. Bryan Herta was third in a Reynard/Ford. Driving Chip Ganassi's Target Honda/Reynard, Montoya averaged MPH at Long Beach, and went on to become the 1999 CART FedEx Series Champion Paul Tracy, starting 17th in his KOOL Reynard/Honda, took the lead with 20 laps to go and went on to capture the 26th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach the same course on which he won his first Champ Car race in Tracy finished 3.91 seconds ahead of Helio Castroneves (Marlboro Penske) and Jimmy Vasser. Vasser's third-place finish in his Toyota-powered Target Lola was the best to date for the new Toyota powerplant. Tracy averaged MPH for the win as nine cars were running at the checkered flag Polesitter Helio Castroneves led from flag to flag to win the 27th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in his Marlboro Honda/Reynard. The 25-year-old Brazilian withstood early pressure from Kenny Brack, who later retired with a broken gearbox, then outdistanced fellow Brazilian Cristiano da Matta (Texaco Lola/Toyota) to the checkered flag. 23 2002 Michael Andretti used his veteran guile to take the 28th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in his Team Motorola Honda/ Lola. The 39-year-old American used a brilliant pit strategy and withstood polesitter Jimmy Vasser s late run to win the race by seconds. Max Papis finished third Heartbreak for Michel Jourdain Jr. at the 29th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. With seven laps to go and leading the race, the Mexico native s transmission broke leaving his final pit stop. The victory went to Paul Tracy in his Player s/indeck Ford-Cosworth, after staying close to Jourdain every step of the way. It was Tracy s third Long Beach win. Adrian Fernandez was second, seconds behind, while Bruno Junqueira was third Paul Tracy put the new Champ Car "push-to-pass" power boost to good use, firing by polesitter Bruno Junqueira in the first turn and holding on to win the 30th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, his second straight win and fourth overall at "The Beach." Junqueira motored to a second place finish, while France's Sebastien Bourdais finished third, but would go on to win the Bridgestone Presents the Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford championship For the first time in his Champ car career, Sebastien Bourdais started outside the top three. It was a minor annoyance, as he charged to the front of the pack after 35 of 81 laps, then held off a series of challenges to win by seconds. Paul Tracy finished second, followed by Bruno Junqueira After a first-lap shunt virtually eliminated three of his closest competitors, Sebastien Bourdais motored on to win his second straight race through the streets of Long Beach by more than 14 seconds over runner-up Justin Wilson. Katherine Legge finished 8th the highest-ever Champ Car finish by a woman Coming off the worst weekend of his four-year career in Las Vegas, Sebastien Bourdais dominated the 33rd Annual race to score the 24th win of his career, pacing 58 of 78 laps and winning his third straight on the streets of Long Beach. The story of the day, however, was Forsythe Racing's Oriol Servia, who jumped into the ride after Paul Tracy was injured on Saturday morning. Servia - despite having no seat time in the car - roared all the way from 14th on the grid to finish second Team Australia's Will Power, driving for KV Racing Technology, vaulted from fourth to first at the start of the race and cruised to victory in the final race in Champ Car World Series history. Franck Montagny was second, followed by Mexico's Mario Dominguez. Power led all but two laps during pit stops. The race also saw the first standing start on the streets of Long Beach since the 1983 Formula One race IndyCar's debut at Long Beach saw Target Chip Ganassi's Dario Franchitti rally past polesitter Will Power to take the checkered flag by seconds on his way to the 2009 IndyCar Series championship. Team Penske's Power was second, followed by Andretti-Green's Tony Kanaan. Much of the pre-race excitement surrounded Team Penske's Helio Castroneves, who made his return to the series after a lengthy - and sensational - court case. With only two 30-minute practice sessions under his belt, Castroneves brought his #3 machine home 7th overall Ryan Hunter-Reay, the newest member of the Andretti Autosport team, held off Justin Wilson by seconds to give the team its first win since June 2008 at Richmond. Hunter-Reay, driving the #37 IZOD car, dedicated the win to his mother who had recently passed away. Polesitter Will Power finished third in a race sloweed by just one full-course caution. 24 2011 England s Mike Conway overtook Ryan Briscoe on lap 72 of 85 and held on to win the 37th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Conway was as far back as 11th on a lap 66 double-wide restart, but roared back to take the checkered flag ahead of Briscoe. Dario Franchitti finished third, with James Hinchcliffe and Alex Tagliani rounding out the top five Will Power steered his Team Penske mount to victory in the 2012 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, but it wasn t easy. Power qualified second, just a tick behind polesitter Dario Franchitti. However, prior to the start, IndyCar penalized all Chevy-powered cars for unapproved engine changes and he ended up starting 12th. Avoiding some early-racing troubles, Power and his team held fast to a two-pit-stop strategy and that made the difference as he rolled up enough of a lead to hold off fast-charging Simon Pagenaud - who had made three stops - for the win. James Hinchcliffe was third Takuma Sato became the first driver from Japan to win an Indy car race, prevailing in the 39th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. He was also the first Japanese driver to win at Long Beach, and the first to be on the podium in the race's history. Sato, who started fourth in the 80-lap race on the mile, 11-turn street circuit, provided A.J. Foyt Racing its first victory since July 7, 2002, at Kansas Speedway with Airton Dare behind the wheel. The last win for the team on a road/street course was by A.J. Foyt on Oct. 1, 1978, at Silverstone. Sato led Graham Rahal across the finish line under caution. It was the best finish for Rahal since finishing second at Texas in June Mike Conway, driving for Ed Carpenter Racing, claimed his second victory on the streets of Long Beach, beating Will Power by.9005 of a second. He inherited the lead with two laps remaining and held it to the checkered flag, winning the 40th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Power finished second for Team Penske and series rookie Carlos Munoz scored his second IndyCar podium finish with third place for Andretti-HVM Racing Scott Dixon, who entered the weekend with just one top-five finish in eight Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach starts, won the 41st edition of the historic street race by seconds over Verizon P1 Award winner Helio Castroneves. When Dixon beat Castroneves off pit lane on the first service stop on Lap 29 to take the lead, he wasn't to be denied in a race that had only one caution flag during its 80 laps. Juan Montoya placed third in the No. 2 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet. 89 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series: Changes Making for Exciting Racing! Change was the name of the game in the Verizon IndyCar Series off-season. In the powerplant division, Chip Ganassi Racing switched from Chevy to Honda, while A. J. Foyt Enterprises went the other way, from Honda to Chevy. In the driver sweepstakes, Team Penske signed Josef Newgarden to pilot its #2 entry, driven last year by Juan Pablo Montoya. While still under contract with Penske, Montoya will not race at Long Beach but is a good bet to do - at least - the Indy 500. Dale Coyne Racing signed Sebastien Bourdais and Indy Lights champion Ed Jones to drive its #18 and #19 entries, respectively. Takuma Sato left the Foyt camp and signed with Andretti Autosport to drive the #26 car. Meanwhile, Foyt inked Carlos Munoz (#14) and Conor Daly (#4) to contracts as his team's two drivers. And one of those many off-season changes immediately paid big dividends: Sebastien Bourdais won the March 12 season opening race at St. Petersburg. And, he did it the hard way, starting dead-last in the field of 21 thanks to a crash in qualifying. Bourdais, who last raced for Dale Coyne six years ago, methodically made his way up through the field, taking the lead on lap 36 and leading for all but five of the remaining laps to pick up is 36th career IndyCar win, breaking a tie with Bobby Unser for sixth all-time. "Honestly, I'm a bit speechless," Bourdais said post-race. "We had a miserable day yesterday and that was all me, and today we turned it into a great day. I just have to say thank you to the guys." In all, Bourdais - who won the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach three straight times, from led 69 laps. For Dale Coyne, it was his fifth win as a team owner in 33 years, made even sweeter when his other driver, rookie Ed Jones, scored a 10th-place finish in his IndyCar debut. Defending Long Beach and IndyCar Series champion Simon Pagenaud (Penske Racing) finished 10.3 seconds behind Bourdais, with Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing) grabbing the final podium spot. Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport) recovered from some early-race mechanical issues to finish fourth followed by teammate Takuma Sato, securing a top-5 finish for his new team. Rounding out the top 10: Helio Castroneves (Team Penske); Marco Andretti (Andretti Autosport), Josef Newharden (Team Penske), James Hinchcliffe (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports) and Jones. Honda engines dominated the race, powering seven of the top-10 cars. Just prior to the start at St. Petersburg, IndyCar announced that Honda and Chevrolet, as well as chassis maker Dallara and tire supplier Firestone, had inked multi-year agreements to stay involved in the future of IndyCar racing. Said Jay Frye, IndyCar director of competition and operations, "It's another sign of the positive momentum we continue to build as we grow this sport into the next decade." 94 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship: BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix Takes Center Stage Three high-powered racing classes will take the green flag at 1:05 p.m. Saturday for a 100-minute sprint in the BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach, round 3 of the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Series. And with two races in the books one thing is certain: the Taylor brothers are on a roll! Jordan and Ricky Taylor - last year's Prototype (P) Class winners here at long Beach - got 2017 off to a flying start by teaming with Max Angelelli/Jeff Gordon to win the Rolex 24 at Daytona driving a Cadillac DPi. Then, on March 18, they joined with Alex Lynn to capture the 12 Hours of Sebring. The Taylors finished the 2016 season in third place behind P Class Championship winners Dave Cameron/Eric Curran and their Corvette. In the GTLM Class, Dirk Mueller, Joey Hand and IndyCar star Sebastien Bourdais - winner of the IndyCar season opener at St. Petersburg - took first at Daytona (5th overall) in a Ford GT, then came back to finish second at Sebring behind the Corvette of Antonio Garcia/Jan Magnussen/Mike Rockenfeller. Last year, Patrick Pilet/Nick Tandy won at Long Beach in a Porsche 911 RSR, but finished behind eventual GTLM Class champions Oliver Gavin/Tommy Milner and their Corvette C7.R. The GTD Class did not race at Long Beach last year, but Allesandro Balean/Christina Nielsen emerged as series GTD 2016 champions in their Ferrari. At the Daytona 2017 season opener, Carlos de Quesada/Michael Christensen/Jesse Lazare/ Michael de Quesada/Daniel Morad won GTD honors, finishing 18th overall. 111 Pirelli World Challenge Championship: Shaping Up To Be Hotly-Contested Again This Season Three competitive classes. Fifty minutes. Wheel-to-wheel action. It all begins at 10 a.m. Sunday when the GT and GTA classes of the Pirelli World Challenge battle it out in Round 3 of its 2017 competition. Every year, the Pirelli World Challenge, North America s top GT Production-based road racing series, proves to be extremely competitive. Witness last October, when the championship came down to the final lap in the final race of season! In a classic wheel-to-wheel duel for the PWC GT point title, Portugal s Alvaro Parente and Patrick Long of Manhattan Beach were just inches apart on the final circuit of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and were being closely hounded by Cadillac s Johnny O Connell and rookie Michael Cooper. And when the dust settled, newcomer Parente was celebrating the GT championship atop his McLaren 650S! The 2017 Pirelli World Challenge series is expected to be another down-to-the-wire battle with a superb lineup of GT- and GTA- Class drivers fighting it out for the championship in legendary racing brands like Porsche, Ferrari, Cadillac, McLaren, Mercedes, Acura, Bentley, Audi, Lamborghini, Nissan and Aston Martin. Back to defend his GT crown is Parente, the former open-wheel driver who quickly made a name for himself with six GT wins (including here at Long Beach) and five pole positions in his first year. Parente wheeled his McLaren 650S to victory in race 1 of the season opener March at St. Petersburg, then finished fourth behind arch-rival Patrick Long in race 2. Long and his Porsche 911 GT3R, third in race 1 at St. Petersburg, edged Johnny O'Connell's Cadillac ATS V.R by 1.4 seconds to win race 2. The win was good enough to vault him into the points lead, 46-44, over Parente heading to Long Beach. While those three drivers lead the 2017 standings, they'll be challenged by a contingent of strong contenders including Michael Cooper (Cadillac VTS-V.R), Ryan Dalziel (Mercedes AMG GT3), Jon Fogarty (Porsche 911 GT3 R), Bryan Sellers (McLaren 650S) and Ryan Eversley and Peter Kox in two all-new Acura NSX GT3s. The action in the GTA category should be just as fierce as in GT! Alec Udell, last year's GT Cup champion, steered his Porsche 911 GT3 R to wins in BOTH St. Petersburg races to take the early points lead over Michael Schein, winner of six GTA races last season, in a similar Porsche. Udell s teammate, James Sofronas is another solid GTA contender, along with John Potter (Audi R8), Mike Hedlund (McLaren 650S), Tim Pappas (Porsche 911 GT3 R) and Mike McCann (Audi R8). 122 SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks: Gearing Up for a Fender-Banging Two-Race Battle If there's an early favorite heading into the SPEED Energy Stadium Super Trucks doubleheader this weekend, it has to be Sheldon Creed. Creed, from El Cajon, took both Super Trucks races at Long Beach last year, then went on to win 10 more races and captured the 2016 Super Trucks championship -- his second straight title -- finishing 75 points ahead of runner-up Matt Brabham. In the three-race Clipsal 500, the 2017 season opener March 3-5 in Adelaide, Australia, Creed won the second race and finished 7/5 in the other two, then finished second in both races March at St. Petersburg. Brabham, from Gold Coast, Australia, finished 2/3 here last year and ended 2016 with three race victories. He was 3/12/2 at the Clipsal 500. At St. Petersburg, Brabham was ninth in the first race, then led wire-to-wire to handily win the second race. Series founder Robby Gordon finished third in the series and also scored three race wins. Gordon, the series champion in 2013 and 2014, ran 12/3/4 at Adelaide, then scored his first win of 2017 in the first St. Petersburg race before finishing third in Race 2. The three will be banging fenders again this weekend amid a field of 12-plus identically-prepared Super Trucks barging through tight corners, running frequently on two wheels and getting airborne more than 150 feet down the track off ramps, a wild combination that has made the action-packed series a fan favorite. Other series drivers include: Arie Luyendyk Jr., long-time Indy Lights driver from Scottsdale AZ; Jeff Hoffman (Phoenix AZ); Gaven Harlien (Mesa AZ), Eric Davis (Burbank); Bill Hynes (Nazareth PA) and Paul Morris (Gold Coast, Australia), with more drivers yet to be announced at program press time. 129 Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge: 3-time series champion Chris Forsberg heads the field A lineup of 16 top Formula DRIFT cars and drivers will be slipping, sliding and smoking up the streets of Long Beach under the lights Friday and Saturday nights in the two-race Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge. Formula DRIFT season series champion Chris Forsberg will be out to defeat defending race champion Matt Field, who beat out Michael Essa for the win. Last year, Forsberg outran Frederic Aasbo for the season title by 37 points, Vaughn Gittin Jr. finished third in the standings, followed by Aurimus Bakchis and Field in the top five. Forsberg is a three-time Formula DRIFT champion, having also won titles in 2009 and 2014, while Essa was the series champion in The starting field will be battling wheel-to-wheel in turns , with Grand Prix ticketholders able to catch all the action from grandstands 16, 18, 24, 25 and 26. 133 Can-Am Challenge: Historic Cars Take to the Streets for the First Time Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach fans will get a ground-shaking taste of the 1000-horsepower cars that dominated the golden age of Can-Am racing when the historic machines battle on the world-famous seaside circuit. The inaugural 20-minute Can-Am Challenge race starts at approximately noon Saturday, just prior to the BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix event. It will be the first time the powerful cars have competed on any city's streets, and the tremendous sounds the 1000-hp engines produce is something race fans will long remember! Can-Am, short for the Canadian-American Challenge Cup, was a wildly popular racing series that ran at tracks in Canada and the U.S. from 1966 to The Can-Am era featured sleek creations from McLaren, Porsche, Lola, Shadow and more, with a list of famed drivers that included Jim Hall, Mark Donohue, Mario Andretti, Parnelli Jones, George Follmer, Dan Gurney, Phil Hill, Bruce McLaren and John Surtees, among others. The Long Beach race will feature 22 cars from Can-Am's era and will be sanctioned by the Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA). Grand Prix Foundation Key Member of Long Beach Community Since its inception in 1991, the Grand Prix Foundation of Long Beach has contributed more than $4 million to a wide variety of charitable organizations throughout the greater Long Beach area.
