Circuit Safety Car Light Panels Start Finish Marshals Gravel Traps Reality check for the race to be #2 T he first race of the European season rammed home the enormity of the task facing the teams chasing the large shadow cast by Mercedes. There were the first tangible signs that Red Bull has emerged as the #2 with Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel claiming third and fourth at Barcelona. While the champion team of the previous four seasons achieved its best collective result after five races this year, it was far from conclusive. The gap between the English-based team from the Anglo-German Mercedes squad was substantial. What is not as clear-cut is the margin Red Bull holds over the rest. Williams is starting to show signs of living up to its promising pre-season test form while Ferrari is lurking but still unable to penetrate further up the grid than mid-to-lower-range top 10. Aside from Fernando Alonso s somewhat lucky third place at Shanghai, Ferrari is a lot more removed from #2 than it had anticipated. Alonso has already made the stark but real admission that hauling in the rampant Mercedes is out of the question. The real target for the Maranello marque is indeed striving to be #2. 5 Round 6 - Monaco Grand I Betting Story 5 Silver Arrows tipped for Monaco monopoly M ercedes stranglehold over the field is reflected in the cramped odds about Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg continuing their triumphal march on the streets of Monaco. The Brackley team streaked to its fifth win of the season in Barcelona with Hamilton grafting out a.6s win over Rosberg. Another silver arrows one-two saw the pair almost a minute clear of the third placed Daniel Ricciardo. Hamilton is rated a $1.65 favorite and is at the even more prohibitive odds of $1.22 to win the championship. Rosberg is assessed as a $2.50 (6-4) chance to win a second straight Monaco GP and is at the more liberal quote of $4.50 to win his maiden F1 world championship. The markets are reflective of the stranglehold Mercedes has over the field with Red Bull s pair of Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel both on the third line of betting at $13. Outside of Ferrari s Fernando Alonso at $21.00 it is big odds the field with the Spaniard s team-mate Kimi Raikkonen next at $ The current markets for the timehonoured race around the principality are almost an admission that Mercedes is unbeatable. Indeed Monaco traditionally is dominated by those who qualify up front such is the overtaking challenges on the tight course. Our proud platinum partners

8 Round 6 - Monaco Grand I Cover Story Paddock plotting to end Mercedes reign in Monaco A fter claiming every pole position and race win this year, its no wonder why Mercedes are being labelled as The Untouchables. The Anglo-German outfit has stolen a march on all of its rivals this season leaving the paddock scratching their heads as to how to close the gap and beat the Silver Arrows. However, this weekend s Monaco Grand could offer teams brief respite from the Mercedes onslaught. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg s domination of the season so far has already been likened to the feat achieved by McLaren in 1988 when the all conquering MP4/4 won 15 of the 16 races. Such dominance prompted Ferrari s Fernando Alonso to go on record before the Spanish Grand claiming that Our proud platinum partners Mercedes are so far ahead they could win every race. Hamilton s fourth victory of the season at the Catalunya circuit not only further enhanced the Brackley team s advantage but it produced a telling statistic of modern F1. In the last 24 grands prix there have just been four different winners which is the lowest number since McLaren s 1988 domination. It was only two seasons ago that the start of the 2012 campaign delivered seven different winners from the first seven races. While the spotlight remains firmly placed on Mercedes leading up to this weekend s jewel in the F1 crown, there is growing talk amongst the paddock that the magic of Monaco could rear its head and disrupt 2014 s natural order. The glamorous streets of Monte Carlo continue to offer a unique challenge unlike any other which tests a driver s skill and concentration levels to the limit. Monaco s mystique has produced its fair share of unexpected results over the years and the 3.3km iconic circuit s tight and twisty nature looks set to aid the paddock in their pursuit of Mercedes. Third and fourth place finishes in Spain two weeks ago confirmed Red Bull as Mercedes nearest rivals. The performance has given reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel reason to believe Monaco could offer him a chance to break the three pointed star s stranglehold. I think we can challenge. It is difficult to predict but maybe in Monaco you need less power, said Vettel. You still need power, but maybe a little bit less than in other places. Hopefully in time we can catch up and give Mercedes a run for their money.

Round 6 - Monaco Grand I Cover Story 9 Vettel s view is echoed by Alonso with the Spaniard confirming that Red Bull has a real shot at victory come Sunday. The double world champion feels teams need to put more pressure on the runaway championship leaders to force them into mistakes. This year I think Monte Carlo will be one of the few opportunities maybe to challenge Mercedes, especially for Red Bull, said Alonso. In the corners they are very fast but on the straights they seem to lose a lot of lap time. In Monte Carlo there are no straights so Red Bull could challenge Mercedes there. Our thinking at the moment is to work hard on the car with all the team in Maranello and try to become more competitive and make things a little bit more difficult for Mercedes. When they win by one minute from everybody, they don t stress the car, they don t make mistakes, so the first step for us is maybe not to win, but not to finish one minute behind and try to complicate things a little bit for them. While its often easy to be absorbed by the magic of Monaco, there is no denying Mercedes remain the odds on favourites to continue their 100 per cent winning start to the season. However, Rosberg has revealed that there are growing concerns within the team this weekend although he fully expects to be challenging for victory along with teammate Hamilton. For sure the opposition is going to be closer in Monaco. I expect Red Bull to be a lot closer, said Rosberg. But we have a strong package, engine and car, so we should be fine. FLASHBACK Monaco Grand 1993 Ayrton Senna became the master of Monaco as he guided an underpowered McLaren to a record breaking sixth win on the famous street circuit. The Brazilian s triumph eclipsed twotime world champion Graham Hill s record of most victories at Monte Carlo, a feat which had stood for 24 years. Alain Prost claimed pole position in his all conquering Williams ahead of Benetton s Michael Schumacher with Our proud platinum partners Senna third almost a second adrift of pole. Prost jumped the start and was issued with stop/go penalty which dropped him down the field. Schumacher inherited the lead but a hydraulics issue forced him into retirement leaving Senna in the lead. The Brazilian made no mistakes as he secured his sixth win at Monaco from the Williams of Damon Hill and Jean Alesi s Ferrari.

10 Round 6 - Monaco Grand I Feature Sir Jack Brabham S peedcafe.com s Gordon Lomas pays tribute to Australia s legendary three-time F1 world champion Sir Jack Brabham, who died aged 88 this week. The remarkable Sir Jack Brabham lived a life most would not dream possible. Starting from humble beginnings at Hurstville in Sydney Brabham worked on motorbikes as a teenager, juggling jobs while attending night school. Brabham did not set out to become a racing driver it just happened. He spent two years in the air force as a flight mechanic during WWII where he learnt a lot about engines. After the war ended in 1945, Sir Jack and a mate, who would be the driver, built a speedway car together. But following a few crashes his mate had no choice but to give it away at the stern order of his wife. So I was left with the car and I thought I d have a go at driving and that s how I started, Sir Jack told Speedcafe.com in a lengthy interview last year. Brabham would famously go on to win Our proud platinum partners the F1 world championship in 1959, 1960 and 1966 during an era that was notorious for being the most dangerous in history with mortality rates among grand prix drivers appallingly high. Black Jack very nearly lost that first championship when he ran out of fuel at Sebring and was forced to push the car over the line for the last 45 metres. Brabham dominated in 1960 but when the rules changed to 1500cc engines he was left wanting, with Ferrari becoming the powerhouse. The most thrilling win in 1960 was the French GP at Reims when we downed the Ferrari team and everybody said we couldn t beat them because it was a fast circuit, he recalled. The French GP was celebrated vigorously by the drivers and Brabham s efforts that weekend in 1960 brought with it enough bubbly to throw a party for a small village. Part of the prize in 1960 was 100 bottles of champagne for the fastest driver in practice and I won that. Then the second day they had another 100 bottles providing the time was better than the first day and I won that. I then won the race as well which was another 100 bottles so I had 300 bottles of champagne. The celebrations ended though for

Round 6 - Monaco Grand I Feature 11 the following year when Brabham s considerable nous for engineering would be brought to the fore. In 1961 I brought Ron Tauranac over to England and decided to build our own cars under Motor Racing Developments, Sir Jack recalled. MRD really got going in 1962 and we built our first F1 Brabham car. It was the beginnings of Brabham s greatest achievement when, in 1966, he managed to win the world title in a car designed by himself using a Repco engine built in Australia. Between us (Repco) we built an engine for the new three litre formula and it was very successful. We only used the Oldsmobile block and built the rest of the engine around it, Sir Jack told Speedcafe.com When Sir Jack decided to walk away from F1 in 1970, he was torn but ultimately bowed to his family s pressure. We lost three drivers in 1970 Piers Courage, Jochen Rindt and Bruce McLaren and my father, Tom, urged me to give it away which I did. Originally I wasn t going to drive in 1970 because Rindt was supposed to drive for us but he went and drove for Lotus and was unfortunately killed (Rindt remains the only F1 champion to claim the title posthumously). In many ways Sir Jack was a pioneer in motor racing, an innovator and an engineer who would achieve remarkable feats against the might of the finest racing stables from England and Europe. He built the first rear engined Cooper F1 car in 1955 on a sports car chassis which he raced at Aintree. Cooper managed to find a sponsor so Brabham could do the 1961 Indy 500 which he finished ninth against considerable odds. We only had a 2.7 litre car and we were racing against 4.2 litre engined cars, Sir Jack said. tanks had been milked without my knowledge and we were flying over the biggest lake in Sweden, Sir Jack said. When the engines stopped it certainly gets your attention but we managed to switch over to the tank which had fuel in it and fire up the engines again which was a relief. There were also some hijinks with Denny Hulme and Bruce McLaren in 1970 after Brabham won his final grand prix in South Africa. We spent some time at Kruger National Park and were told by the people never to get out of our motor car because it was too dangerous. Denny had a movie camera and he was filming these monkeys and Bruce McLaren had a packet of biscuits in his hand. Then a baboon got up onto the bonnet But I was surprised at how well it did and and looked through the window and could it paved the way for Indy to field all rear see the biscuits. engine cars. He could see the window was down Some of his most colourful stories were and he came in through the window and revived to Speedcafe.com during the pushed Denny to one side and reached candid interview. over and grabbed the biscuits and took off. 12 12 Round 6 - Monaco Grand I Circuit Guide T : T T DRS ACTIVATION DRS DETECTION MONACO GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT Qualifying A race weekend in Monaco must be approached in a logical and progressive manner. The crescendo is qualifying, which defines the weekend. This is where the work carried out by both team and driver throughout each practice session shines through, as it is where those who can get the maximum from their car without making a mistake will prosper. This is what makes Monaco such a special and unique challenge. There are a number of things a team can do to maximise the potential of the car. During the final qualifying sessions a driver will realistically have just one, possibly two clear laps to make an impression and it s not uncommon to see a surprise name caught out during Q1. With 22 cars enclosed on a very short circuit, each driver must find clean air in which to put together a complete lap. A combination of yellow and sometimes red flags, coupled with traffic, makes it very easy to be caught at the wrong time on the wrong part of the track. Approaching Monaco requires significantly more diligence towards mitigating risk than at any other circuit. Track Evolution In reality, the Monte Carlo circuit is not a circuit. Even Melbourne, another street circuit, sees enough action aside from Formula One to make track evolution reasonably minor over the course of a weekend. Again, unlike any other venue, the Monaco circuit is open to the public throughout the race weekend: running Our proud platinum partners All-In-One Security times aside, obviously. Between qualifying on Saturday and race day on Sunday, with thousands of people streaming through the streets clutching drinks and so on, the track will have changed dramatically. It s predicting that, understanding it and getting it right, that enables you to have the best possible result in the race. It s been the case time and time again that tyres may behave one way on a Thursday but completely differently during a race. This is why it s such a special event for both drivers and engineers. Tyres As per last season, the soft and super soft are allocated for Monaco. This comes as no surprise and is common practice for a street course, as the tarmac is not of the same type as that found at a permanent circuit. Fundamentally these are still public roads. Monaco is superb in terms of the care and attention put into the roads, with around a third of the road surface used during the race resurfaced each year. The quality of the tarmac is far superior to that seen on any average road, hence the need for such frequent work, however it is still very smooth. There isn t the sort of damaging abrasion that can be expected from a more normal track surface. Hence, the softest allocation of tyre possible is required to give the greatest level of adhesion on the low-grip track surface. The downside of this is that there is a high probability of tyre graining - damage to the tyre surface that causes shearing and tearing across the top of the rubber. This is particularly common on Thursday when the track is at its lowest grip. Again, this furthers the principle that you may experience a very different engineering challenge during practice to that of the race. Cooling Achieving effective levels of cooling is a very difficult task around Monaco. Often, teams struggle with both engine and brake temperatures. This is mainly owing to the fact that, with the exception of the leader, almost every car will find itself in traffic for the majority of the race. No matter if you expect to have a performance advantage or not, every car must be set up under the assumption that it will be running in traffic. Furthermore, the low-speed nature of the circuit layout is an obstacle to cooling. The way to cool a car down is to travel at speed but there simply isn t sufficient space around Monaco to do so. Teams therefore have no choice but to run higher than average cooling levels. Weather Weather is not too difficult to predict in Monaco, with rain normally arriving from one direction. There is a cloud that sits behind the mountain and if it comes over there will be rain. If the cloud is low-lying and does not clear the mountain, however, it will stay dry. That said, it s entirely possible that the first time the drivers experience wet weather running will be during qualifying. There is a relatively high probability of rain in Monaco which takes a situation that was already complicated and makes it far more so.
