Liz and I had a couple fabulous weeks in the sun of Orange and North San Diego Counties of Southern California. We were late getting out there because of the snow but, once there the weather was chamber of commerce quality all the way. Since we've been back home I understand they've had torrential rain. Lucky us! Big News! We have a new Meeting location. Starting with the March meeting this Thursday, March 5, we'll meet at 6:30PM at American Pie, 927 Maple St. Carrollton. This is a pizza and Italian restaurant. We'll have a private room and they offer audio/visual equipment at no charge. Thanks to Glenn and Debbie Novak for arranging this new site and providing the evening's program as well. Spring appears to be finally coming around. Time to air up the tires on our old clunkers and have some fun. We've got some fun things in the works for spring time. Bill Hearnburg has been working on a trip to Griffin, Ga to visit a collectable car dealer's facility. The fellow generally has a minimum of 50 cars at any one time. Many of us remember the warm welcome we received last year when the West Ga Region was invited to attend the Cottage Landing Retirement Home Expo with the Golden City Cruisers. This year the Expo will be on March 22nd, 10AM to 3PM, at the Gold Dust Park in Villa Rica. Lets all try to support this worthwhile cause. We will have special parking for the old cars on display. Speaking of the Golden City Cruisers. The Cruisers have extended an invitation to join them on a tour to the George Bugg Collection in Athens, Ga. on April 26th. George has been collecting cars for many years. He has around 110 at the moment. His cars run the gambit of brands and it will be quite a day. Even sooner yet is the Cruise-In at Bojangles on Highway 61 in Villa Rica Friday afternoon and evening. Sorry for the delay in getting the March newsletter out but we've been playing "catch up" after being gone the last two weeks. Hope to see everyone tomorrow night at American Pie. 3 Crane retrieves first three Corvettes from sinkhole - from Old Car Weekly It s been almost three weeks since a 40' wide, 60' deep sinkhole opened up within the Skydome of the National Corvette Museum, taking eight prized Corvettes with it. Construction and engineering teams have been hard at work since day one, putting a plan in place for the recovery of the cars and restoration of the building. The recovery of the three most accessible Corvettes: the 2009 Blue Devil ZR1, a th Anniversary Ruby Red Corvette and a 1962 Black Corvette commenced on Tuesday with all three cars being successfully saved. Monday s Operation Corvette Plus resulted in the recovery of the 2009 and the 1993 and nearly all day Tuesday was dedicated to the 1962 a car that was recovered around 1:45pm CT giving spectators watching from the Museum s plexiglass viewing area and the construction and engineering crews a huge sigh of relief. The team began work early Tuesday, extracting a portion of the car lift that had become mangled around the car, removing the hood from the 62 and tying a strap to the engine bay, then drilling anchors into the slab of concrete that appeared to be wedged into the grill. In hooking their lifting devices to the car they discovered that they didn t have to lift the slab to free the car. Really, all that went better than I expected that s my favorite car, said Mike Murphy, CEO of Scott, Murphy and Daniel Construction. I see body damage. The chassis looks intact, the frame s not bent, the interior (other than being a little dirty) is pristine. So, I think it s some fiberglass work, some ornamentation work, and paint, said John Spencer, Manufacturing Integration Manager at the GM Corvette Assembly Plant. This car is in amazing shape considering what it s been through. I don t see anything unrepairable. Murphy indicated that the next step will be to remove the concrete slab off the bank of the hole, and to remove the rest of the car lift. After those are out of the way they will begin stabilizing and securing the red spire and the walls of the hole. I m tickled to death that we were able to get those three cars out with no problems, and they were in good condition, he added. 4 MEMORANDUM FROM: CHARLES NORRIS, GA/AL AACA REGION RE: EUFAULA PILGRIMAGE TOUR AND CAR SHOW I have received a notice of a car show to be held in Eufaula on the weekend of the Eufaula Pilgrimage Homes tour. It is being organized by the ALAGA Club in Eufaula and it gives us several advantages for that weekend. First, registration is free if you contact them and register before April 1! Second, if you are registered in the car show then tickets to see 10 homes are only $20. This whole event ticket is normally $70. (see attached flyer). My suggestion is that if you are even thinking about going, then register before April 1 It is free and if you decide not to go it will not matter. Lynn and I and a few others are planning on going down Friday afternoon and spending the night. There is a night time tour of homes and a small show on Friday night. We will be staying at the Quality Inn and if you want to stay there let me know, we will give you the information. Alternately, if you do not have time to spend two days there, you could come down Saturday morning. Then put your car in the show, get your tickets and tour the homes that day. If you are thinking about going just let me know and I will keep a list. Thinking of a summer Cruise-In (no specific date proposed). 5. March club activity is a car collection visit in Griffin GA on March 29, Proposed to invite LaGrange club to also attend. 6. Club intends to make Lowell Opry House Cruise-In an annual event. Bill Hearnburg has already received a commitment from the T-Bird club to attend. This could be a big attention getter for our club, but will require a big promo and early advertisements. 7. March 6, 2014 meeting will be held at American Pie on Maple Street in Carrollton at 6:30PM.
