2 I DON T KNOW? Bugles Across America, NFP was founded in 2000 the same time Congress passed legislation stating that Veterans have a right to at least two uniformed military people to fold the flag and play Taps on a CD player. In recognition of the service these Veterans have provided to their country, we felt that they each deserve a live rendition of Taps played by a live bugler. To this end, we are actively seeking capable volunteers to provide this valuable service to Veterans and their families. Would you be interested in becoming a bugler? Info on page 29 (A story that could have been prevented by University of Scouting.) Steve and Suzie Scoutleader both volunteer with Scouting. Steve is a Scoutmaster with Troop 123 and has about two years as Scoutmaster under his belt. Suzie is a Den Leader with Pack 123 and really likes working with Cub Scouts even though she has only been volunteering for less than 2 years. Suzie has a Den Meeting coming up and has run out of ideas to keep her very rambunctious Bears busy. She is struggling with the new way of doing things in Cub Scouts and really hasn t had time to read the new Leader s Guide. She just plans on letting the boys play soccer in her back yard but realizes that will not work forever. When the Pack Committee Chair wants to hear her plans for the next month, Suzie replies, I DON T KNOW? Scoutmaster Steve is feeling overwhelmed because annual planning is coming up and he just doesn t know how to keep the Scouts focused. Also, the Scouts have planned a Knots and Lashing Blitz event and Steve knows that he is just not very good at either. In addition, several of the Scouts have unfinished Merit Badges from Summer Camp and Steve just doesn t Occoneechee Scout Sign July 2015 Vol 11 #7 2

3 know where to begin with that. When the Senior Patrol Leader asks Steve, I ve got some ideas for some of our upcoming Troop Meetings, can we talk? Steve replies, I DON T KNOW? Steve and Suzie Scoutleader could have prevented the dreaded answer, I DON T KNOW if they had just attended Occoneechee Council s University of Scouting! Suzie could have taken classes to help her understand the new way of doing things in Cub Scouting. She could have taken a class to help her plan gathering activities and crafts for her Bears. She could have learned to network with other Leaders to gain ideas and help. Suzie could have taken a class to help her add some PIZZAZZ to her meetings. Steve could have taken a class that would offer up unique ways to deal with annual planning that keep the Scouts engaged. He also could have taken a class that would have given him more experience with knots and lashings. Steve might have even taken a class on Merit Badge Counselor Training! OH MY GOSH! Steve and Suzie Scoutleader need to get signed up for the next University of Scouting on Saturday, November 7, 2015, at Wake Tech Community College. As a matter of fact, everyone should mark their calendars now and plan on attending this event so that we never have to use the phrase, I DON T KNOW! Started by Sir Robert S. Baden Powell, Wood Badge s primary purpose is to strengthen Scouting in our units, districts, and local council. Come join in all the fun at our next Wood Badge Course, S The course runs on two weekends, Friday 7:00am through Sunday 5:00pm. Attendance at both weekends is required. 5 New Nature Trail at Camp Durant The next time that you are at Camp Durant with your unit take some time to explore the newly installed Nature Trail. The goal of this trail is to assist Scouts of all ages learn about the flora and fauna that is found on the reservation property along with stations specifically designed to help a Scout toward earning a number of Cub Scout Adventures, rank requirements, merit badge requirements, Ranger LNT requirements, and the Outdoor Ethics Award. Phase I of the trail is complete and it includes a section specifically focused on the Principles of Leave No Trace Frontcountry Guidelines. As a leader, you are encouraged to have your unit stop at each station to learn about each principle and then have a discussion about how to apply that principle while on the property and on your unit s other outings. This is a great section for Cub Scout leaders to help their Den fulfill the requirements for the Tiger Adventure: Tigers in the Wild, Wolf Adventure: Call of the Wild and Bear Necessities: Fur, Feathers, and Ferns. A poster of the Outdoor Code is posted on kiosks at either end of the trail for your use toward these Adventures. For the older Scouts, leaders can use the trail as a tool to help their Scouts toward rank advancement such as animal track, plant, and tree identification and becoming better stewards of our great camp and other outdoor areas. Phase II of the trail is underway and will include the installation of 16 more stations specifically aimed at assisting Boy Scouts fulfill a number of the Ecology/Conservation based merit badge requirements. Where can you find this great resource? You can access the trail from either behind the Handicraft Shelter or across from the Ecology/Chapel Area. It runs ¼ of a mile utilizing some of the existing trails used to cross camp and then some newly established trails down around the lake. There are kiosks at each end of the trail with a map and other important outdoor ethics information. So, take some time to explore this new feature at our great camp all while Sticking to the Trail and Leaving It the Way You Found It! Share your STORY Scouting Circles Troop 75 Troop 75 New - May 2015 Hello Hello Spring came upon us this month and, as usual, we were outside. This month s highlight was our canoe trip on the Cape Fear River. We camped overnight, cooked breakfast, and packed our canoes with lunch and water and off we went down the river. The lower level of the river exposed many rocks and we navigated through some tough rapids. We concluded with dinner and campfire. Now we were ready to sleeeeeeep. A great time was had by all. Send us your Troop News and Photos Our recent yard sale for raising funds was held on April 25 at Roses in Fuquay- Varina. We started early and sales were doing great. Then at 11 AM when it seemed we were winding down, the rain came. When it appeared the rain was not going to let up we shut down. Coming up next month are the celebrations of our four newest Eagle Scouts and the week at summer camp in Shenandoah, VA. Troop 75 News - June 2015 Hello Hello After the May trip on the Cape Fear River, we were till not finished with our Scouting activities. Two weeks later we were back in action doing our good turns and community projects at the Special Olympics held at the Cary Town Aquatic Center. Our boys were assisting in the start at the swim meet. We spent the entire day helping those special Olympians show their championship styles. Timing is everything! The Occoneechee Council VOA s September kick off event has been tabled until further notice! More information about our new VOA will be sent out within the month. SeaBadge Course # SB-25-NC-2016 SAVE THE DATE FEB Seabadge is intense leadership and management training focused on the "how- to" aspects of managing a successful youth led Sea Scout program. While Seabadge was developed as an advanced leadership training program for experienced Sea Scout adult leaders the course is open to all adult Scout leaders. The driving theme for the training is to "Focus on Youth", which makes the course especially valuable for any Scout leader dealing with older youth. 9 OA NEWS Scouting Alumni Association The Scouting Alumni Association is an organization for anyone who has been positively and personally impacted by the Boy Scout of America: former Scouts, family members of Scouts both past and present, volunteers past and present, and the millions of Americans who benefit from Scouting in their communities every day. 16 What is NYLT? National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership. NYLT is a six-day course. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster. 17 Prerequisites Scouts must be at least 13 years, but no older than 17 years old. All Scouts must be at least First Class rank or above. Venture Scouts must be at least 14, but no older than 20 years old. Ages apply for the start of the course (July 31st). Completion of TLT, ILST, VLSC, or ILSC is highly recommended in order to truly take advantage of this exciting course. Sign Up Now Reservations are first come, first served and due 40 days before the course begins June 20th. Final payment is also due by June 20th. Courses fill up fast, so send in your registration early! Dates The course runs two 3 day weekends. Participants will be required to arrive by lunch time each Friday and stay through approximately 4pm on each Sunday. Both weekends are required to attend the full course, no exceptions. What to Bring After your registration is accepted, you will receive a welcome with a list of what to bring to NYLT. In general a participant will bring camping gear for each 3 day weekend. Venturing and Sea Scouts YES! Venturing and Sea Scouts may attend. If you re a registered Venturer, you may attend. Worried about being the only girl on course? Non-sense! We have made sure accommodations will meet all of our participant s needs. Location Camp Durant located in the western edge of the Sandhills and the eastern edge of the Piedmont, is a year-round operation for the area BSA troops. It is widely known in the area for great programs through out the realm of scouting activities and is a perfect location for NYLT. Why go? It s an investment in the future of your troop. 19 Qualifications Be a registered adult in the Boy Scouts of America Have not previously completed 21 st Century Wood Badge Completed the training requirements for your Scouting position, including any applicable outdoor skills training (A) Be capable of functioning safely in an outdoor environment Have a current Annual BSA Health & Medical Record, Parts A, B & C ( Safety/ahmr.aspx) Be invited to attend Wood Badge S Submit all fees, medical forms and paperwork by July 17, (A) Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills is a required prerequisite course for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches and Assistants, and Venturing Advisors and Co-Advisors of crews with an outdoor program. All other participants are encouraged to complete the Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training before attending a Wood Badge course, but it is not required. (B) The BSA National Office requires that Wood Badge courses be structured by invitation only so as to ensure that the courses reflect as wide an array of diversity as possible, including program diversity (Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venturing) and geographic diversity (all of the districts our council serves). 20 Occoneechee Council - BSA Leave No Trace Trainer Course October 2-4, 2015 at Camp Reeves Registration deadline is August 31, 2015 All registrations for this course will be handled online. Course size is a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 9 students Registrations will not be accepted after 8/31/15. This 16-hour, overnight training course is designed for youth and adult members of Scouting 14 years of age and older, who value the outdoors and want to instruct others in their unit and/or district in outdoor ethics. The course assists the student participants in learning more about the seven principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for teaching these low impact skills. Completion of a LNT Trainer Course is also a pre-requisite for the Boy Scout Leave No Trace Trainer youth leadership position within troops and crews. Lead discussions on outdoor ethics and help others explore their own personal outdoor ethic. Participants who successfully complete the course will be registered with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics in Boulder, Colorado as a LNT Trainer. They will also receive a LNT Trainer certificate, a trainer pin, and will be commissioned to present LNT principles and outdoor ethics, to teach the BSA LNT 101 course and to qualify individuals for the BSA Outdoor Ethics Awards. Time: The course begins at 7:00 pm on Friday night and is continuous until noon on Sunday. You must attend and participate in all sessions which run through the evening. This experience is meant to provide relevance to the curriculum, through practicing LNT techniques and methods, observing examples of impact, and creating awareness of use and its purposes.. 21 Minimum age: The minimum age set forth by The Center for Outdoor Ethics is 14 before the class starts and First Class rank (Boy Scouts only) for all youth participants with their Scoutmaster/Advisor s permission. The age requirement is non-negotiable. Fees: Registration is $70 paid to the Occoneechee Council using the online registration system. This fee covers all meals from cracker barrel on Friday night through breakfast on Sunday, all Leave No Trace program and training materials, certificate of recognition as a LNT Trainer, and a BSA Leave No Trace Trainer card Pre-req: You must take the online LNT Awareness course ( prior to coming to class and submit the training certificate. Facilities: We will be primitive camping at Camp Reeves. Half of the course will be taught indoors with the other half being outdoors, weather permitting. 22 SEABADGE Course # SB-25-NC-2016 SAVE THE DATE FEB Save the date for a fun filled weekend of fellowship. Seabadge is intense leadership and management training focused on the "how-to" aspects of managing a successful youth led Sea Scout program. While Seabadge was developed as an advanced leadership training program for experienced Sea Scout adult leaders the course is open to all adult Scout leaders. The driving theme for the training is to "Focus on Youth", which makes the course especially valuable for any Scout leader dealing with older youth. Seabadge does not cover topics like boating, knots, or other program-related materials found in the Sea Scout Manual. Overview & Purpose Seabadge is a weekend course that begins Friday afternoon and concludes with a closing ceremony before lunch on Sunday. Course participants and staff function as a model ship to help participants understand how a ship or youth-led unit should function. The curriculum includes twenty sessions, with established objectives, that are presented in a motivating and informative forum. The objectives of Seabadge are to: Improve the understanding of leadership, management, and motivational skills among adult leaders. Provide management, leadership, and presentation skills and tools to adult leaders so that they may use and share them with others in their day-to-day Scout activities. Use the skills and tools acquired at Seabadge to improve the quality of the Sea Scout program. 26 Gone Home Stanley Richard Williamson Overseas Arrowman Association member Mr. Williamson died Feb. 1, 2015, at age 71. Stan was orphaned at age 13 in March 1957, and became a ward of the state. During his teenage years, he found himself in a number of state-operated institutions and finally in a group home for children, called the Children s Home of Baltimore. The home, located on Woodburn Avenue, was the estate of Enoch Pratt, founder of the first public library in Baltimore. The home provided a stable lifestyle for Stan. He was one of 35 boys and seven girls. It was where he met his future wife and lifelong companion, Jeanne. On his 17th birthday, he quit school and enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 13, 1960, where he served for the next 20 years, 6 months and 18 days, retiring on Nov. 30, 1980, as a sergeant first class. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served two combat tours of duty in the Southeast Asian country. During his career, he had been a multichannel carrier operator, a radio operator, a military instructor at two Army service schools, a battalion training noncommissioned officer and his last six years as a newspaper editor at Fort McClellan, Ala. 3 During his leisure time as a young man, he volunteered in 1975 as a leader in the Choccolocco Council, Boy Scouts of America, and held nearly every position from committee member to cub master (Cub Pack 110-Fort McClellan, Ala.), and scoutmaster (Boy Scout Troop 527-Mannheim, Germany). He was a three-bead wood badger having served on four Wood Badge Training Courses in Germany and Alabama. He closed his career as a Scout leader in 1989 after 14 years of service to our young men and future leaders. Among his Scouting awards are the Silver Beaver and numerous council and district training awards. Stan and his wife, Jeanne, were foster parents in South Carolina, Alabama and in Germany ( ) and cared for over 70 children of all races and backgrounds, ranging in age from newborn to 17 years old. Following his retirement in 2002 from civil service, he became a Chapter Service Officer for the Disabled American Veterans, Fry Chapter 14 of Sierra Vista. In this capacity, he provided assistance to veterans, and their surviving spouses and children, in obtaining their benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. In April 2005, he and his wife moved to Nolanville, where he again volunteered his services with the local Disabled American Veterans, Harry Axline Jr., Chapter 22. He continued in this position until his death. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4008 in Belton. 29 Bugles Across America Sanus Veneratio ~ Veneratio Sanus Sound the Honor ~ Honor the Sound Bugles Across America, NFP was founded in 2000 the same time Congress passed legislation stating that Veterans have a right to at least two uniformed military people to fold the flag and play Taps on a CD player. In recognition of the service these Veterans have provided to their country, we felt that they each deserve a live rendition of Taps played by a live bugler. To this end, we are actively seeking capable volunteers to provide this valuable service to Veterans and their families. Would you be interested in becoming a bugler? Join our group by going to our website shown above and register. You will be joining over 5500 bugler volunteers located in all 50 states and a growing number overseas. For the last 13 years, Bugles Across America has been given credit for over 100,000 Funeral Missions. Our members have given over a million hours of volunteer time to our veterans and their families. You will also be qualified to wear the new BSA Honor Guard Insignia. Bugler Volunteers can be male or female. They can play a traditional bugle with no valves, or they can perform the ceremony on a Trumpet, Cornet, Flugelhorn, or a 1, 2 or 3 valved bugle. The bugler can be of any age as long as they can play the 24 notes of Taps with an ease and style that will do honor to the Veterans, their families, and the burial detail performing the service. There are no fees or dues to participate as a volunteer, although there are certain directives that must be followed. Bugles Across America NFP does not charge members to join nor does it collect dues. Our membership consists of men and women of all ages, races, and creeds. They are active military, veterans, Scouts and Scouters and civilians alike. Many are professional musicians, while others are capable but purely amateur. Regardless of background or previous experience, we require all volunteers to audition by sounding Taps for a Director before being placed on the active bugler list to assure that every veteran s family will receive a dignified sounding of Taps. The very purpose of existing as an organization is to provide a live sounding of Taps, powered by heart rather than by batteries. It is understood that every note may not be absolutely perfect every time, although that should be the goal each time we are called on to provide the honor. The demand is not for absolute and unwavering perfection, but rather for every mission-ready bugler to be able to sound a generally acceptable version of Taps on a consistent basis. With this in mind, each bugler shall be prepared to sound Taps at the reasonable request of their State Director.
