Unfortunately the day was marred with several mishaps, including a midfield, midair collision between Peter and Lee. Lee was able to repair his plane and continue. Rick Walsh flew straight and true, racking up the highest points. Bud Parker won a heat and did well in the standings, attached. Oopses, In the last month, there was more carnage and mid-airs than usual. There\fore, the Obits Pieces and are spread throughout the newsletter

Eight pilots competed in a day that had more destruction than usual. In heat 1A, Rick W s plane suffered a structural failure in flight and crashed. The fuselage cracked behind the firewall with a loud snap. In 1B, Lee and Bud had a midair collision at the north pylon, and had to retrieve multiple pieces. In 4a, Rick W had a prop strike on takeoff, and never made it to the first pylon. In 4b, Paul was flying too low trying to stay up with the leaders and struck the ground, breaking the prop. The order of finish: 1a: Kregg, Paul, Rick M, Rick W DNF 1b: John, Peter, Bud DNF, Lee DNF 2a: John, Kregg, Peter, Paul 2b: Rick W, Lee, Rick M, Bud 3a: Kregg, John, Lee. Rick W 3b: Peter, Paul, Rick M, Bud 4a: Rick M, Lee, Bud, Rick W DNF 4b: Kregg, Peter, John, Paul DNF Kregg had the high score of the day with 1, followed by John 13, Peter 12, Rick M, Lee 8, Paul 7, Rick W, Bud 4. 5 Guttersnipe Pylon of May 17 The May 3rd pylon race was weathered out, but a make-up was scheduled at the club meeting for the 17th. Three guttersnipes were present for the event: John, Lee, and Rick Walsh. They raced four times, with Rick W. winning each of them. John finished second on all of the races, except for the first race which he did not finish. Lee finished second there, and third in the remainder. Examining the pieces below. June 7th Guttersnipe Pylon Ever seen a Guttersnipe kiss the ground on landing after a particularly harrowing flight? Oops, too soon. The gloves and machete give Rick away. It was a great day for Guttersnipe Racing, with sunny and mild conditions with little wind. The field conditions were excellent, thanks to Rick Walsh. Five Guttersnipe pilots remained after the E-Snipe race., so we had six races with each pilot sitting once. There was one mid-air, and the pylon watchers were kept busy calling cuts particularly at the north end. Kregg won the first race, followed by Lee and then John.. Rick M failed to start. While Kregg sat the second race, John and Lee s snipes linked up before the first pylon for a new dance step, called the tandem stall-turn to the turf. That left the two Ricks, whti Walsh finishing ahead of Magnuson. In the third race, Lee failed to start while Kregg and Rick tried to see who could cut the most pylons. Both were DQ d, so John picked up the win by default. The fourth race was the one and only race with four finishers. The order of finish was Kregg, Rick W, John, and Rick M. In the fifth race, Rick M. crashed into the trees down the back stretch and Lee quit early with an out-of-control Snipe. Kregg finished ahead of Rick W. That left three snipes for the final race, with the order of finish: Kregg, Rick W., and John. For the day, Kregg finished with 16, Rick W. 13, John, Rick M. 4 and Lee 3. Thanks to Bernie, Don, and others who watched the pylons.

6 Olympic Radio Control Association May 14, 2014 Meeting Minutes President called the meeting to order with 12 ORCA members and one guest in attendance at our new meeting venue, Poulsbo City Hall. President s comments: Peter opened the meeting by thanking members responsible for laying out the logs that now define our pit and parking areas. As noted last month the club needs a new Safety Coordinator, as it is position required by AMA. Peter pointed out that the Safety Coordinator is not a policeman. Rather the Safety Coordinator is there to enhance safety at the field. There were no officer's reports. Remaining May events include the Slow Stick pylon race and the final indoor micro flying session. Since the earlier guttersnipe race was called off due to heavy rain, it was decided to hold a make up guttersnipe race after completion of the Slow Stick race. Peter asked the guttersnipe pilots to call others who might be interested. Old Business: Bob Kampmann noted that there is overnight parking/camping in the Uplands area that is not associated with an OPG approved event. Also, non-orca members are parking within the logged area that defines club parking. The suggestion was made to have another sign made and posted opposite the existing entry sign. Peter reminded all that the shared use situation is a challenge for us all and we should proceed cautiously and be patient. May is the last of the three indoor micro flying sessions. At this last session, participants will be ask for their opinion if indoor flying should continue in the fall/winter. New Business: Julio Gonzalez is going to be a father! Congratulations Julio. Rick Walsh said that there is going to be a change in the household closest to the field. In light of the upcoming change Rick suggested that gas powered planes be allow to fly again. After discussion, Rick will keep abreast of this change and, at an appropriate time, submit a proposal that the members can review, edit and/or approve. Peter can present the final plan to OPG. Rick Walsh asked the club's opinion about using the field, at a time when there is no RC flying, as a paraglider runway. Peter asked the members to think it through and be ready for discussion at the June meeting. Peter will check with AMA for any additional considerations. After discussion the idea was tabled. Peter had two moneymaker ideas and asked for a volunteer to lead one or both. One was to participated in the AMA August 16 th National Model Aviation Day that is supporting the Wounded Warrior Project. Since the 16 th is a planned slow stick race day, the suggestion was made to move up the scale meet and make it a two-event day. No action was made to finalize this proposed event. The other moneymaker was to have a raffle with the winner getting a ride in Fifi, a B-29. However, given the cost of the ride, $7, and the number of ticket that would have to be sold, this idea did not (so-to-speak) fly. Larry Elliott received a solicitation to add a classification section to our web site. The members did not think it was of any benefit and rejected the solicitation. Larry Elliott asked members if the weather section of the web site was meeting their needs. This topic was moved to the June meeting for discussion. Members can Larry with any comments they may have. A situation came up where a biker asked to have to port-a-potty unlocked so the bike rider could use it. The club policy is that the port-apotty is for ORCA use only and should not be unlocked for non-orca use. Show N'Tell: Julio Gonzalez had his B-17G to show off. It is from Hobby King and has many features. Julio got it as a scratch and dent item and completed it. He is now offering it for sale for $200. Julio also has many other planes for sale, as his flying days will be limited due to the upcoming arrival of his first-born. Julio also builds for others at $/hour. The meeting was adjourned at 8:1 p.m. June, 2014 Meeting Minutes President called the meeting to order with 8 ORCA members, including new member Bill Slater, in attendance. President s comments Peter opened the meeting by discussing the present mixed use of the area around our flying field. Some of the shared use issues are our port-a-potty being used by the general public, parking within our logged area and the trail entrance location. While there were some ideas regarding these issues, no specific actions were made. is our new Safety Coordinator, a position required by AMA. There were no officer's reports. Remaining June event is the Slow Stick pylon race. Old Business The proposal to use the field for paragliding was rejected by OPG due to noise considerations. The September meeting will be at the Woodfired Pizza in Poulsbo. New Business A suggestion was made to revisit the operating hours for glow-powered aircraft by extending the stop time from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. No definite action was taken on this suggestion. Show N'Tell Ron Bruhn brought his Bat Bone tri-copter inspired by an article in the March 2014 issue of RC Flyer. The Bat Bone is made from some specific ready made parts, some balsa and off-the-shelf motors, ESCs and electronic controls. The Bat Bone generated a lot of questions and interest in this relatively low cost multi-rotor machine. Ron will make available a copy of the RC Flyer article and pass it along to our web master The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
