24 DAMON HILL Born into a racing family in 1960, Damon Hill became accustomed to the F1 lifestyle from an early age, with regular visits from his father s friends such as Stirling Moss, Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart to the Hill home. Tragedy struck in 1975 when Graham Hill and several members of his team were tragically killed in an air crash. Damon started competing in motorbike racing in 1981, before changing to four wheels and climbing the ladder to International Formula Hill s attributes as a hard-working and talented driver impressed Frank Williams, who hired him as a test driver for Hill was promoted to a full-time drive with Williams in 1993, winning three races and finishing third overall to his title-winning team mate Alain Prost, who promptly retired. When Ayrton Senna was killed at Imola in his third race for Williams in May 1994, the task of leading Williams fell to Damon, who helped rebuild morale and drove himself to exceed all expectations. Hill fell agonizingly short of winning the Championship in 1994 after colliding controversially with rival Michael Schumacher in the final race in Adelaide. World Championships 1996 Career Wins 22 Nationality British Date of Birth 17 September 1960 Hill followed in his father s footsteps by claiming the 1996 Formula One World Championship, winning eight out of sixteen races along the way. He then moved to Arrows, where he endured a difficult season in 1997, apart from almost scoring an unlikely victory in Hungary. Hill s final F1 team was Jordan, where he scored the team s first Formula One victory before retiring in There was no doubt he had done justice to the family name. To Graham Hill s total of 14 wins and two driver s titles, Damon Hill added 22 victories and his own World Championship. 24
