Category: A - Z of NASCAR Subcategory: A - C Tip: Air Dam The air dam is made of Kevlar and extends from the front bumper of the vehicle downwards to only inches above the ground, stabilizing the front end of the car. Blocking the air from flowing under the car prevents a reduction of speed. Tip: Back Marker A slower car, that is often not on the lead lap is known as the back marker. Subcategory: D - F Tip: Drag Drag is caused by air flowing around the car and can hinder a race car as it cuts through air. A car with less drag can accelerate faster because the car needs less horsepower. Subcategory: G - L Tip: Getting Hung Out to Dry A driver that loses his race position because he lost the draft is sometimes referred to as getting hung out to dry. When this occurs, the driver needs to get back in line with the other cars where he can go faster. Tip: Lapped Traffic The cars that are no longer on the lead lap are known as lapped traffic. These cars are usually far slower than the leaders. Subcategory: M - P Tip: Marbles Pieces of tire and debris that build up on the outside of a track during the race is known as marbles. When a driver runs over them, he will lose control of the car. This term was given to the debris, because it makes the car feel like it is on "marbles."
Subcategory: Q - S Tip: Roll Bars Roll bars, also known as the roll cage, are made of strong steel tubing. They are a part of the car's protective frame and safeguard the driver and important components of the car from the impact of a collision. Tip: Stock Car In the early days of racing, drivers would typically race their cars just as they bought them from the dealer. This type of car is considered stock. Today, these 'stock' cars, contain very little of the original vehicle found in the showroom. Modifications are made to enhance the speed of the racecar and to make them as safe as possible. A racing stock car has no headlights, no door handles and no side window glass. Even though the majority of each stock car raced in NASCAR is specially designed for racing, they are still considered 'stock'. Subcategory: T - Z Tip: Tri-oval A modified oval race track with an additional slight turn is known as a tri-oval. Typically, the turn is located mid-way down the frontstretch (the section between the last turn and the first turn). This additional turn is often called a "dogleg." Tip: Victory Lane The circle or square in a fenced-in area where a driver celebrates a winning finish is known as Victory Lane. He celebrates with his family, car owners, crew and sponsors. Category: Before Race Weekend Subcategory: Buying Tickets Tip: Daytona 500 If you are planning to go to the Daytona 500, be sure to buy your tickets a year in advance. Tickets to this race sell out fast, and scalpers tend to raise the ticket prices four or five times their original value for this weekend. Tip: Go Without a Ticket
If you were unable to find a ticket, there is still one option - go to the track without one. Although this can be a nerve racking experience, if you are a patient person willing to spend the money, you should be able to find a ticket for a fair price. If you are willing to miss the first few laps of the race, you will likely even find a ticket for less than face value. Be sure to be cautious when buying a ticket from a scalper. Check the date on the ticket and look it over to see that it looks right. A little extra time spent here, may be what saves you some hassle later. Tip: Surf the Internet If the track happens to be sold out of tickets for its next NASCAR race, check the internet. There are sites devoted to helping fans obtain tickets. Most of the spare tickets come from other fans who either have an extra ticket, or can no longer go to the race. But be careful when purchasing tickets across the net because although it is rare, there have be instances where the seller has printed up what appears to be a valid ticket, but is not. Category: In the Garage Subcategory: Common People Tip: General Mechanics The general mechanics are the all-round workers that can do just about anything mechanical. They will help with the car's set up, build extra parts for the car back in the trailer and make repairs after a crash. Subcategory: Do s and Don ts of Autographs Tip: Don't - Conversation Do not expect a long conversation with your favorite driver. If you want to talk longer to a driver, go to one of the pre-scheduled appearances they are making in your area. In this situation, the driver will be more relaxed and not busy trying to concentrate on other things. Tip: Don't - Qualifying Do not ask for an autograph just before qualifying. The drivers may be nervous while they await their first lap. If you do ask for an autograph, chances are that the drivers will become cranky and sign the autograph making it near impossible to read.
Category: In the Grandstands Subcategory: The Do s and Don ts Tip: Don't - Throw Anything Do not throw anything onto the track or into the grandstands. If you are caught doing this, security guards will kick you out of the track with no refund. Subcategory: The Fans Tip: Neighbors When viewing from the grandstands, you have no choice but to make friends with the people sitting next to you. This is because the seats are located so close to one another. Category: Merchandise Subcategory: Accessories Tip: Driver Series Watches Value-priced watches are available from NASCAR for about $40. They are known as the Driver Series Watches and feature the driver's car number, a replica signature and a white background. Tip: Owner Style Watches A 23K gold Owner Series watch is available for around $130. Available in most Winston Cup teams, the watch comes complete with the driver's car number and replica autograph. Styles are available for both men and women. Tip: Photograph License Plate For around $10, you can purchase the photograph license plate of your favorite driver. There is a variety of designs available, but typically, there is a picture of the car, the driver and a replica autograph. Subcategory: Books
Tip: NASCAR For Dummies This would have to be one of the best books about NASCAR out there that I have found to date. It is filled with information on everything that you could ever want to know about the sport like what makes the series differ, the rules, several top-10 lists, information on every track and so much more stuff than I could possibly do justice for. NASCAR For Dummies is a great tool for old and new fans alike. This paperback book is written by one of the Winston Cup's best drivers, Mark Martin and comes complete with pictures, charts and the highest quality of information I have been able to find to date. Tip: Wide Open: Days and Nights on the NASCAR Tour I bought the book called, "Wide Open: Days and Nights on the NASCAR Tour", about a year ago. I had fully expected this book to be a tough read, because being the kind of person I am, I read very little more than the writing on the outside of my cereal box in the morning. That said, I can honestly say that I enjoyed reading through this book. It was fast paced, but what I think gave this book its extra flair was the fact that it was written by someone who didn't start with a particularly large interest in NASCAR. Subcategory: Clothing Tip: Socks Socks, featuring many of your favorite drivers are available in a variety of sizes for around $5 a pair. Available in both men and women's styles, the socks typically include the driver's car number. Subcategory: Headwear Tip: Caps For around $20, you can purchase a cap featuring your favorite driver. There is a wide variety of styles available for many of the drivers. Caps typically include driver's replica autograph, car number and/or primary sponsor. Subcategory: Home & Office Tip: Round Clock A series of round clocks are available from many of NASCAR's Winston Cup drivers. Costing around $25, the clocks are complete with the driver's name, car's photo, car number, replica autograph and primary sponsor photo.
Category: On the Track Subcategory: Flags Tip: White On all NASCAR tracks, the white flag is used to indicate to the drivers that they have started their final lap of the race. Only during road course events is the white flag used by the corner workers to indicate that an emergency vehicle is on the racetrack. Tip: Yellow The yellow flag is also known as the caution flag. The yellow flag indicates that the drivers must slow down and proceed around the track with caution. During a caution, the pace car will come on to the track and lead the cars until the race is ready to be restarted. Subcategory: Rules Tip: Qualifying Order Qualifying order is chosen at random. For example, in NASCAR Winston Cup, each team draws a number. The order in which these numbers are drawn is determined by the current car-owner points. Category: The Basics of a NASCAR Race Subcategory: The Basics of a NASCAR Race Tip: Keeping Track Scorers are a throwback to an earlier era in NASCAR. When the sport first started, each team designated a person to go to the scorers stand, always near the start/finish line and usually in the infield. The scorer would be responsible for manually marking, or scoring', their driver each time the car crossed the line. These sheets were used to determine how many laps a driver had actually completed and in a few rare instances established who actually won the race. Today NASCAR uses electronic scoring. Each car has a transponder and as they pass the start/finish line, it registers as a transponder unique to that car. As each car crosses, NASCAR knows who it is and therefore it keeps up with the scoring and where that car is running in relationship to the other 42 cars There are still 43 scorers assigned by the teams for each race. They still report to the scorers stand prior to each race, and most often simply push a button each time their car passes the start/finish line. Their primary role now are as backups to the electronic
timing and scoring. NASAR has a Chief Scorer who has the overall responsibility for all the timing and scoring at a race. Tip: Making the Grade Cars are inspected prior to being released for their first practice, before and after they qualify and before and some after the race. Post race inspection always involves the top five finishers and several cars chosen at random by NASCAR. Category: The Basics of NASCAR Subcategory: The Basics of NASCAR Tip: NASCAR Sponsorships Sponsors are the lifeblood that makes NASCAR go, literally. Corporate sponsors provide the financial support that keeps the individual NASCAR teams competitive. The money they provide allow the teams to buy parts, build racecars and pay the salaries of the drivers and team members. In return for their investment, sponsors choose the overall team colors and the paint schemes used on the racecars; this is where the term rolling billboard' comes from. The sponsors product or brand will be visible to millions of fans in person and on television. The TV exposure can actually be measured; a firm called Joyce-Julius & Associates provide weekly reports to sponsors. These reports will tell the sponsor how much TV time they received the week prior and how much in actual dollars that TV team was worth. For the sponsor the benefits that come from a NASCAR sponsorship go beyond just TV time. NASCAR fans have been shown to be the among the most loyal sports fans in the world. They will often go out of their way to support a brand that sponsors their favorite driver. According to NASCAR, sponsors gained a record $5.2 billion in sponsorship exposure in NASCAR sponsorship is the best buy in marketing, according to Larry DeGaris former Director for Sports Sponsorship at James Madison University. The combination of awareness, favorability and effectiveness is unparalleled in the sports world or anywhere else. There are three main levels of sponsorship, Primary, Major Associate and Associate. A Primary sponsor normally funds the entire team operation and will have say over team colors, uniforms and racecar paint schemes. A Major associate sponsorship will normally have a spot on the rear deck lid or rear quarter panel of the racecar and a prominent logo on the team's uniforms. An associate sponsor will get the A' or B' post on the racecar (the area just behind the driver or passenger side windows), or the lower quarter panels depending on their agreements. Because the economy and corporate revenues have changed in the past few years, teams are being forced to become more creative in seeking funding. Some teams are using more then one primary sponsor throughout the season. Still other teams have agreements to run a primary sponsor part of the season and another the rest of the year. Some even share primary sponsors, with one sponsor as a primary
for certain races and another for other races There are also contingency sponsors. These are sponsorships normally set up through NASCAR. The small decals framing the front wheels on racecars are all contingency sponsorships. The team is paid a certain amount to display the decals. Tip: The NASCAR Points System Points in all three of NASCAR's major system have all been awarded the same way since Bob Latford, who was a pubic relations official at what was then known as Charlotte Motor Speedway and now known as Lowes Motor Speedway, developed the system. The system awards points from first place to 43 rd, or 36 th in the Craftsman Truck Series. The number one finisher is awarded 185 points. Second place points back. From the third to the sixth place positions the separation is five points (sixth place is awarded 150). From seventh to eleventh the separation is four points. Three points separate positions twelfth until the end. Five bonus points are also awarded for leading a lap and leading the most laps during a race. NASCAR determines who is leading each lap at the finish line. In other words, a driver who makes a pass for the lead along the backstretch must still be leading when they cross the finish line in order to be credited with leading a lap and gaining the five bonus points. Only the driver who starts the race is awarded the points for that race. Several examples of relief drivers have appeared through the years. In 2006, two-time champion Tony Stewart who had sustained an injury the week prior, started a race at Dover International Speedway. Early in the race, driver Ricky Rudd replaced Stewart. Stewart was awarded the points for the race as if he had finished Rudd was not. In addition to driver points there are also owners points. Owner points are scored the same as driver points, the exception being that the owner keeps the points the racecar scores no matter who drives it. Category: Tracks Subcategory: A - C Tip: Bristol Motor Speedway Bristol Motor Speedway is the shortest track to which the Winston Cup Series visits. This mile oval-shaped track is found in Bristol, Tennessee and has 36 degree banking in the turns - the highest banking on the Winston Cup circuit. Bristol, which had previously been paved with asphalt, was resurfaced to concrete in Tip: California Speedway California Speedway, which is located on the site of the former Kaiser Steel mill, is a two mile D-shaped oval racetrack. This track, which is found in Fontana, California, hosts six major racing weekends. It has 14 degree banking in the turns and is a great
place to experience the thrills of NASCAR. Subcategory: D - F Tip: Darlington Raceway With the nickname "Too Tough to Tame", it is no wonder that all racecar drivers dream of a win at this track. This mile oval-shaped track, which is found in Darlington, South Carolina, is concidered one of the toughest and most desirable to win. It has degree banking in the turns. Tip: Dover International Speedway With a nickname like "The Monster Mile", it is no surprise that fan continue to flock to Dover International Speedway. This one mile oval-shaped track is found in Dover, Delaware and has seating for more than 140,000 fans. It has 24 degree banking in the turns and hosts some of the largest crowds found between New York and North Carolina. Subcategory: G - L Tip: Indianapolis Motor Speedway Originally, Indianapolis Motor Speedway was used as a test facility for the Indiana car industry. Following a series of races held in 1909, the track was paved with 3,200,000 bricks giving it its current nickname "The Brickyard". This 2.5 mile oval-shaped track is found in Indianapolis, Indiana and hosts the Indianapolis one of the most famous races in the world. It has 12 degree banking in the turns. For further information regarding this topic, please see the article Indianapolis Motor Speedway in this site's articles section. Tip: Infineon Raceway Found in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, Infineon Raceway (formerly known as Sears Point Raceway) is surrounded by one of the top wine-producing regions in the world. This two mile track is one of the two road courses visited by the NASCAR Winston Cup Series each year. The raceway first opened in California in Tip: Kentucky Speedway This state-of-the-art venue co-owned by Jerry Carroll was developed on 1,000 acres and cost a total of $152 million to build. Kentucky Speedway features a 1.5 mile tri-oval and a quarter-mile paved track, both of which are great places for all stock and open wheel racing series to compete.
Tip: Las Vegas Motor Speedway Las Vegas Motor Speedway, found in Navada, is the first new superspeedway to be built in the region in more than 20 years. The facility includes tracks for just about every kind of auto racing like a 1.5 mile superspeedway, an FIA-approved road course, a drag strip, short tracks, go-kart tracks and several other features as well. Subcategory: M - P Tip: Memphis Motorsports Park Starting out as a multi-track facility back in 1986, Memphis Motorsports Park was run by a group of investors. Ten years later, the track was bought by one of America's leading players in motorsports, the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach. Since then, the 0.75 mile oval-shaped track's fan base has grown larger than ever. Tip: Mesa Marin Raceway Mesa Marin Raceway, located in Bakersfield, California is the birthplace of the Craftsman Truck Series. It had hosted a roll-out event in 1994 featuring the now famous trucks. This 0.5 mile track is oval-shaped and features 17 degree banking in the turns. Tip: New Hampshire International Speedway Being just an hour from Boston and two from Portland, Maine, and Providence, R.I., New Hampshire International Speedway is easily accessible from Vermont and Canada. For this reason, the racetrack boasts the largest crowds in New England with 101,000 spectators in attendance at each race. This mile oval-shaped course has 12 degree banking in the turns. Tip: North Carolina Speedway The first race held at North Carolina Speedway was back in 1965 as a joint venture between Darlington Raceway builder Harold Brasington and Bill Land, the land owner. Then, L.G. DeWitt took control of the track and in 1969 the racetrack became the mile oval-shaped track that we know today. Nicknamed "The Rock" because of its Rockingham location, the speedway has degree banking in the turns. Subcategory: T - Z Tip: Talladega Superspeedway Talladega Superspeedway, which happens to be the biggest motorsports facility in the
world, was built at a cost of $4 million. Originally opened in 1969 as Alabama International Motor Speedway, this 2.66 mile track, which shape is a tri-oval, is found in Talladega, Alabama. It has 33 degree banking in the turns and is the fastest superspeedway in the world, holding the records for both speed and competition. Tip: Texas Motor Speedway Found along the Chisholm Trail in Fort Worth, Texas Motor Speedway is a motorsports haven with seating for 150,061 fans. This 1.5 mile quad-oval shaped track is the ultimate in luxury for auto racing fans because of its 194 skybox VIP suites. Tip: Watkins Glen International Since 1948, Watkins Glen International helped to create a road-racing tradition like no other. Previously hosting the F1 United States Grand Prix, this track is one of the most respected in the northeast. The road course is 2.45 miles long and is located in Watkins Glen, New York. Category: Watching a NASCAR Race Subcategory: Watching a NASCAR Race Tip: The Yellow Flag Waves Think of it as a time-out' during the race. Several things can cause a caution period during a race; an accident, debris on the track or for any reason that NASCAR decides they need to slow the field down and cease competition. NASCAR can also choose to throw out a competition' yellow. This is a planned yellow that NASCAR will tell teams about in advance, and is most often used to check tire wear on a new or repaved track surface. Tip: What To Watch For To someone who has never seen a NASCAR race, watching 43 cars go around in a circle can seem boring. Don't tell that to the 75 million people who call themselves fans. Various brands and products, that can be found everywhere, sponsor all the 43 cars that make up the Nextel Cup field. And the drivers represent a cross section of America. They hail from California to Maine, from Washington State to Florida. As the sport as grown so has the driver base; there are now drivers who hail from Canada to Columbia and even Australia. All the major American car manufacturers are represented as well. GM, Ford, Chrysler and Toyota. Focus on one driver, whether you are attracted because of the sponsor, the car make or were the driver is from, choose a favorite. As the race progresses keep an eye on how your driver is doing. Where did he start the
race? Is he making his way up through the field? Did his crew set up his car properly? Are they able to make adjustments to the car during pit stops, which are normally less than 17 seconds long? Once you center yourself on one driver you'll begin to notice the big picture of the entire race and how it's progressing. Is there one driver who is dominating the field? Did a dominating driver have a problem during a pit stop that forced him to the back of the field and he now has to work his way back to the front? At speeds sometimes reaching two hundred miles an hour, and cars racing inches apart, the tension is always present. One slight mistake by a driver can spell disaster for those around or behind him. There are many nuances that make up a NASCAR race. It's much more than just a bunch of guys going around in circles.
