It commenced in 2005 and has proved very popular with the sports and extremely successful in bringing women of all ages into sport. In 2011 NGBs received additional funding for special projects including the IABA (hosting European Youth Championships) and Special Olympics Ireland (participating in the World Summer Games in Athens). In 2012 the Irish Sailing Association and the Golf Union of Ireland will be among the beneficiaries of dedicated funding to support the hosting of important events (the ISAF World Youth Championships and the European Men's Amateur Championships). The Sports Inclusion Disability Officer programme has a specific remit to work with people with a disability to provide them with opportunities in sport and physical activity. Our relationships with key partners such as the Irish Heart Foundation, Age and Opportunity, is supported by cross departmental cooperation with the Department of Education as well as the Department of Health and the Health Service Executive in targeting a more active Ireland. In addition the Sports Partnerships will be allocated resources from the HSE to provide programmes under the banner of Get Ireland Active. The latest annual figures for LSP activity are from the 2010 SPEAK Report: 139,500 individuals contacted the LSP network in order to access general or specific sport-related information. Overview The Irish Sports Council will support extensive participation programmes in the 3 major field sports with over 8 million invested in Across the three sporting bodies the investment supports the employment of 500 people in sports development which will touch the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in every community in Ireland. The Irish Sports Council began investing in the IRFU, FAI and GAA with the introduction of the Special Budget Measure in This was introduced with the specific aim of creating more opportunities for young people to participate in field sports. Over the past decade the three sports bodies have expanded their range of activities through extensive work programmes with communities, clubs, schools, referees and coaches. These programmes are based on a shared ethos of developing the grass roots of the games, growing participation numbers and embracing communities outside of the traditional base of the sport. The Council funding supports detailed action plans which are implemented by the team of sports development officers in each sport. In order to address the strategic imperative of increasing participation each organisation provides a comprehensive set of programmes that aim to develop the infrastructure of their sport. As well as a number of initiatives specifically aimed at bringing young people into sport, there are also programmes that develop clubs and build links with communities. Also, the sports build the expertise of teachers, coaches and officials so that they can provide a quality experience for children and young people who become involved in sport. The 2012 Irish Sports Council investment in this Youth Field Sport Programme is down 10% on With the IRFU, the Council will invest 2.49 million for under-age participation and 120,000 for the Women in Sport Programme. With the GAA, the Council will invest 2.7 million to support the Grassroots to National Programme and promotion of participation in Gaelic Games. With the FAI, the Council will invest 2.84 million to support the implementation of its Technical Development Plan and 150,000 to support its Women in Sport Programme.
