BLH From 1900 to the present day, humanity and the world have undergone major changes. New political ideas resulted in worldwide wars. Fascism and communism divided some countries, and democracy brought others together. Drastic shifts in theories and practice tested the standards of personal freedoms and religious conventions as well as science, technology, and industry. These changes have created a need for world policies and an understanding of international relations. The new mind-set of the modern world includes a focus on humanitarianism and the belief that a global economy has made the world a more connected place. 5 Adolf Hitler Chapter 1 On the World s Stage TThe world s attention was focused on Germany in The capital city of Berlin was host of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. But German Chancellor Adolf Hitler was not a big fan of the Olympics. International competition only caused pure-blooded, blond, blue-eyed Germans Aryans, as he called them to mix with what he considered the lesser peoples of the world. His propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, argued that the Olympics would provide the perfect stage for Germany. The Games, he said, would show the world that Hitler was right about the superiority of Aryan athletes and prove how great Germany was. These Games would be the first to be televised on a closed-circuit system in Germany. The audience Adolf Hitler saluted the athletes at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany.
6 Signature Lives Adolf Hitler would be larger than ever before. Big screens would be set up in theaters throughout the city so local residents could view the games free of charge. Hitler was easily convinced. Work began on a beautiful stadium large enough to seat more than 100,000 spectators. Hitler said, If Germany is to stand host to the entire world, her preparations must be complete and magnificent. Even though Hitler was now convinced the Games Berlin had been the site chosen for the 1916 Olympics. However, that wasn t to be. World War I ( ) caused the 1916 Games to be canceled. Because of its role in starting the war, Germany wasn t allowed to participate in the Games again until should go on in Germany, others weren t sure. In fact, some were dead set against it. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had chosen Berlin in 1931, before Hitler had come to power. Now things were different in Germany. When Hitler became the country s chancellor the second in command on January 30, 1933, he made changes almost overnight. He no longer allowed basic civil rights such as freedom of speech and freedom of the press. In March, the first concentration camp opened in Dachau in southern Germany. At were persecuted in other ways, from boycotts of their businesses to loss of jobs and citizenship. By the time of the Olympics, more than 70 prisoners had been killed in Dachau, about two every month. People in other nations knew this was going on. Many tried to get their countries to boycott the Berlin Olympics. However, the Games went on as planned, with a record 49 countries participating. Among them was the United States, which fielded the largest team after Germany. The world wanted to see how Hitler would handle the Games. Would the German team include any The barracks and ammunition factory in a 1933 photo of Dachau concentration camp in Dachau, Germany first, it served as a prison for those Jews? By this time, Jewish Germans were banned who disagreed with Hitler and his from most grocery stores and restaurants, as well beliefs. Then Jews especially were singled out for as public swimming pools, sports clubs, ski slopes, imprisonment and torture. Outside the camps, Jews beaches, and other places in Germany. How would 10 11
