1 TOWN OF SMITHERS NOTES OF THE SPIRIT OF BC COMMUNITY COMMITTEE (2010 OLYMPICS) MEETING HELD IN THE WEST FRASER ROOM, 1027 ALDOUS STREET, SMITHERS, B.C., ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2007, AT 12:00 NOON. Guest Present: Fergus Tomlin, BV Museum Cindy Savage, BV Midsummer Festival 1. CALL TO ORDER/INTRODUCTIONS Councillor Jo-Ann Groves, Committee Chair, called the meeting to order (12:09 p.m.). 2. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES 2.a) BOULTON/ THAT The notes of the Spirit of BC Community Committee meetings held June 7, 2007 and July 12, 2007 be adopted. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 3. 3.a) BUSINESS ARISING FROM MINUTES/UNFINISHED BUSINESS BC Explorer Program Questionnaires J. Martinson reported that she has received two completed questionnaires. J. Groves commented that questionnaires must be completed by the end of September. 3.b) Application to Host a Team in Ski Sports G. Atrill commented that she has not received a status update on the FIS Athletes Program application. J. Martinson to contact A. Langdon from 2010 Legacies Now for update on application process.
2 Page 2 J. Groves reported that the single selection for preferred sports in our community to host Cross Country Skiing was chosen because the Committee required an organization to endorse it. Opportunities for additional sports will be an option in the near future. J. Cox commented that there may be an opportunity to have the ski hill inventoried through 2010 initiatives throughout the province. J. Martinson to contact A. Langdon from 2010 Legacies Now for detailed information and program contact. 3.c.) Arts Partners in Creative Development (APCD) Final Grant Application for Smithers Main Street Banner Project T. Young reported that the APCD Final Grant Application for Smithers Main Street Banner Project was denied, therefore no funding will be provided. T. Young commented that Russell Maier is corresponding with APCD to determine the reasons for not funding the proposal and then re-submitting an updated version of the grant application to the next APCD Grant Application deadline of October 15, d.) Northern Regional Roundtable Follow-up: Spirit of BC Objectives J. Groves commented that there will be a conference call regarding follow-up but the date is yet to be determined. J. Groves will inform the Committee when the conference call date is confirmed. BC150 (formerly BC2008) Celebrations Ideas for Events 3.e.) J. Martinson commented that the Aboriginal Liaison Student, Lena Wilson, brought the BC150 event idea Walk for Reconciliation to the Community to Community Forum held August 27, 2007, to local First Nations groups in the community. There is an opportunity to implement this event. J. Martinson recommended to the Committee to seek correspondence with Greg George and Debbie Pierre to follow through with celebration idea. J. Boulton discussed the Literacy Now event outline for a local BC150 celebrations titled Learning Festival. J. Boulton commented that the Learning Festival would be an annual event, being held for the first time in J. Groves commented that there is a proposed event to celebrate the arena s 50 th anniversary for BC150 celebrations. J. Groves commented on the budget process for the BC150 celebrations. There will be a single budget to be submitted, with a description of how the costs will be distributed and allocated. Each event will need to submit a budget to the Committee in order to collaborate all costs. C. Savage reported on the research she conducted regarding a mobile stage. The cost of a small mobile stage would be $120,000, and normally purchased by a municipality. The Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society is not interested in purchasing a mobile stage because of the high financial expense. C. Savage commented that there may be an
3 Page 3 opportunity to purchase a used mobile stage. Discussion followed on the possible uses of a mobile stage including events at the ski hill, festivals and fairs, and renting out to other organizations to recover costs. G. Atrill commented community organizations must be made aware of the BC150 celebrations events and funding opportunities. G. Atrill/ THAT J. Groves write a formal letter to community organizations to inform them of the BC150 celebrations and events. C. Savage commented that 2010 funding for the Bulkley Valley Folk Music Festival would be very beneficial because the event has suffered twice in the past five years due to flooding with repercussions of low revenue and decreased budget for future festivals. C. Savage commented that the Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society will be hosting their Annual General Meeting in the near future and will discuss potentially moving the date of the event to a time during the summer that does not coincide with peak flood time Legacies Now Connecting Communities Tour: Smithers September 15 th & 16 th, 2007 J. Groves reported that the Connecting Communities Tour will begin at 8:00am on Saturday and 1:00pm on Sunday. J. Groves commented that Fergus Tomlin from the Bulkley Valley Museum has confirmed the Cadet Exhibition Grand Opening to coincide with the Connecting Communities Tour on Sunday September 16 th. J. Groves commented that 2010 Legacies Now will set-up an interactive display. J. Martinson commented that advertising the Connecting Communities Tour could attract more visitors to the display. J. Groves to contact J.C. Brown for radio advertisement. 4. G. Atrill/ THAT J. Groves place an advertisement of the 2010 Legacies Now Connecting Communities Tour with Smithers Interior News. DELEGATION None. 5. REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE A ITEMS ACTION Arts Partners in Creative Development (APCD): Telkwa Statue Project 5.a) In R. Zitkauskas s absence, no present update of item is available.

Groves commented that Rick Braam from the Ministry of Economic Development is working towards scheduling a date for the Think Asia 2008 Workshop in Smithers, possibly in October. R. Braam is trying to unite the workshop with the Chamber Business week in October. 5.c) BC 2008 Local Museums Program: Bulkley Valley Museum application deadline of July 15 th, 2008 and the Town of Smithers 2008 Budget Process. J. Martinson reported that F. Tomlin and the BV Museum Board are currently working on a proposal for the BC 2008 Local Museums Program deadline of July 15 th, REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE B ITEMS RECEIVE FOR INFORMATION 6.a)to 6.i.) Young/ THAT the following correspondence be received: a) News Release dated August 1 st,2007 titled Giving dreams a field to play on.. b) News Release dated August 7 th, 2007 titled Beijing 2008 One Year to Go. c) News Release dated August 10 th, 2007 titled Premiers of New Brunswick, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador join vision to make the 2010 Winter Games Canada s Games. d) BC Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Secretariat 2010 Commerce Centre, Summer 2007 Newsletter. e) News Release dated August 13 th, 2007 titled Improving the odds for British Columbia s athletes. f) News Release dated August 23, 2007 titled Raising Paralympic awareness and inspiring Paralympic dreams a.) 7.b.) NEW BUSINESS/OTHER 2010 Business Kit J. Groves commented that she will receive a 2010 Business Kit. J. Groves will report back to the Committee when the 2010 Business Kit arrives. Spirit of BC/BC150 Regional Roundtable Meeting Smithers October 16, 2007 J. Groves reported that Smithers will be hosting the next Regional Roundtable Meeting on October 16, 2007 at the Hudson Bay Lodge. An agenda has been formulated with the meeting commencing at 10:30am and ending at 2:20pm.
5 Page 5 G. Atrill commented that the BV Museum will be hosting a week long display of Smithers business history. Participating stores on Main Street will have the heritage of their stores displayed at their location, including historic propaganda. Discussion followed of ideas in hosting the 2010 Legacies Now guests. There were suggestions of providing a tour down Main Street visiting the stores participating in business history week, starting at the BV Museum and ending at the Old Church. A wine and cheese session at the Old Church was suggested. Spirit of the Mountains 2008 G. Atrill commented that the Spirit of BC Community Committee needs to begin the planning process for the 2008 Spirit of the Mountain events. G. Atrill commented that the 2008 festival will be approximately 1 week long and have it be Spirit Week. 8. NEXT MEETING DATE Thursday, September 13 th, 2007 at noon in the West Fraser Room at Town Hall. 9. ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned (1:07 p.m.).
