1 OCEANIA WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION Latest News March 2015 JANUARY OTIP PROGRAM This year is no exception to other years. Seminars, Games, World Championships, International Events and the list goes on. The year began in January with the continuation of the OTIP second group training camp at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute in New Caledonia. Students from Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, Tonga, Fiji, Nauru and New Caledonia trained together with the Institute lifters and lived the life of an elite athlete for one week. This is now the 3 rd year of the OTIP program, and it has surpassed all of our expectations. 10,178 students have now taken part in the last 3 years. 53 students have taken part in the OTIP training camp in New Caledonia fully funded. Even more important than this, is that many of those 53 student lifters have moved on and competed and represented their countries at the Oceania Championships, Glasgow Commonwealth Games in Scotland and the Olympic Youth Games in Nanjing, China. We are now looking forward to an even better year in FEBRUARY 2015 SEMINAR IN PNG In the first week of February, the General Secretary spent a full week in Papua New Guinea holding coaching and technical seminars as well as visit the sites and facilities for the upcoming Pacific Games. PNG is an amazing, culturally diverse country. Part of the Melanesian group in the south western pacific ocean, with a population of 7 million people, most of whom live in customary communities. Weightlifting in PNG is enjoying great accomplishments and recognised in the country as the most successful sport Internationally. Since Sir John Dawanincura and his team took over the sport, it has literally gone from strength to strength. It receives tremendous support from the National Olympic Committee of which Sir John is also the President. Sponsorship plays a big part in PNG weightlifting especially from Trukai Rice. Add to this, having two Commonwealth Games Gold Medals from Glasgow in Dika Toua and Steven Kari, it has certainly taken weightlifting to enormous heights. The popularity of the sport throughout the country now is incredible with hundreds and hundreds of students practicing the sport. Cheering crowds lined the roads of Port Moresby to welcome the The Hon. Justin Tkatchenko Minister for Sport with PNG Olympic Committee two Commonwealth Games gold medallist Dika Toua and Steven Kari. President Sir John Dawanincura witht the PNG weightlifting team. PORT MORESBY this year will be hosting the 15 th Pacific Games. The games that every island of the pacific looks forward to every four years. The country is buzzing with enthusiasm and expectation. The city is already decorated with games flags and billboards. During the seven day visit by the General Secretary to Port Moresby, every single back page of the local newspapers carried weightlifting stories.
2 The General Secretary spent a full day with the Pacific Games Organising Committee looking at weightlifting facilities, accommodation for athletes, training venues and the building of the competition stage. The stadium where weightlifting will be held will hold 3,000 spectators and I have been guaranteed by the Federation that with the sport so popular the stadium will be full to capacity every day of competition. Also the weightlifting event will be televised live. Sir John Dawanincura, Dika Toua, Frank Robby and Paul Coffa visiting the construction of the Games stadium where the weightlifting will be held. FEBRUARY PACIFIC ISLANDS TOURNAMENT The 2015 Pacific Islands tournament turned out to be a great success. This tournament is producing some excellent results every year and it is good for the island nations as it kick starts their year of competition. The OWF is delighted to see that 335 lifters competed and just as important to see that 15 countries participated.
