5 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships present a great opportunity for our best para-athletes to represent their country with pride, and I very much look forward to sharing the experience with the Australian athletics community. Providing a crucial competition opportunity ahead of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games in less than twelve months time, the event will welcome more than 1300 athletes from over 100 countries. Our Australian Flame team is 48-strong and I am hopeful that they can match the impressive 30-medal haul of Lyon Your hard work to deliver upon selection was commendable. Reigning world champion Scott Reardon (ACT) leads the squad alongside a bounty of talent including Glasgow 2014 medallists Jodi Elkington (NSW), Angela Ballard (NSW) and Kurt Fearnley (NSW) and Athletics Australia Para-Athlete of the Year Michael Roeger (SA). An impressive contingent of up and coming talent is also included, with Erin Cleaver (NSW), Brianna Coop (Qld), Kobie Donovan (Qld), Isis Holt (Vic), Isabelle Hampton (NSW), Claire Keefer (Qld), Sarah Walsh (NSW), Alberto Campbell (Qld), Jarryd Clifford (Vic), Tim Foster (NSW) and Jesse Wyatt (Vic) all to compete on the world stage for the first time. I warmly acknowledge the invaluable support that the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Institute of Sport have given to the preparation of our IAAF World Championships team. The cooperation and support of the IAAF, the Australian Olympic Committee, the Australian Paralympic Committee, the Australian Commonwealth Games Association, the Oceania Athletics Federation and Athletics International is also deeply appreciated. At these IAAF World Championships, the Australian team will proudly wear adidas competition uniforms. I, once again, welcome this outstanding global sporting brand as our official apparel and footwear partner and look forward to sharing the track and field journey with them and all Athletics Australia partners in the years ahead. I look forward to enjoying the excitement of the IPC Athletics World Championships with all Australians. 8 DOHA UP CLOSE THE CITY Population: 900,545 (2014) Time difference: UTC +3 (AEDT -8) Average temperature (October): 28.9C Doha, the capital of Qatar, is a modern, open and vibrant city. Situated on the Qatar Peninsula s east coast, Doha is first and foremost a port city, whose key central districts are laid out attractively around its 7km-long curving waterfront. A diverse, multicultural city of the 21st century, the population is hugely diverse. Ex-patriots make up roughly 85 per cent of Doha residents, giving the city an incredibly cosmopolitan feel. The overall personality of Doha s is characterised by a skillful blend of the modern with the traditional. This can be seen across the city, with traditional dhow fishing boats moored opposite gleaming skyscrapers and bustling street markets just a stone s throw from vast shopping malls. This gives Doha a distinctively exotic touch and makes the city fascinating to visit, as contradictions and contrasts wait around every corner. 6
