The honoring ceremony took place at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (Inalco) in Paris last Wednesday in collaboration with Iran s cultural office in the French capital. De Fouchecour has published the book under the title La Quête du Joyau: Maqâlâte Shams al-din Tabrizi in October 2017.The book contains the direct teachings of the outstanding master Shams, having been restored through notes taken by his disciples. Born in the city of Tabriz, Shams lived together with Rumi in Konya for several years, and has been immortalized in Rumi s collection of poetry named the Divan of Shams ad-din of Tabriz. A number of Iranian and French scholars including the France-based Iranian scholar Leili Anvar and French philosopher and Islamologist Christian Jambet attended the ceremony. Speaking at the ceremony, Iranian Islamologist Mohammad Amir-Moezzi, who has been friends with De Fouchecour for over 40 years, called the book unique for a distinctive character like Shams.

7 Jambet also regarded the translation as clear and lucid due to his comprehensive knowledge of Persian history and culture. De Fouchecour for his part called the book full of secrets and mysteries that feature traditions and thoughts. De Fouchecour is also famous for his translation of the Divan of Hafez. 8 8 language.the film is one of the five nominees for the Live Action Short Film category for the 90th Academy Awards. Speaking to Mehr News correspondent on Tuesday, Ali Farahani, Iranian cinematographer described by Overton as nothing short of a genius, said he was offered to photograph The Silent Child after his work on a research documentary about people with hearing and speech difficulties in the UK. The film s Oscar nomination will increase the audience's awareness of the subject matter and create a new opportunity for societies attitude toward people with hearing and speech difficulties, Farahani said. Based on the film s narrative, hearing and speech impairments are not a physical disability. The Silent Child teaches the proper way of treating people with hearing and speech difficulties, so instead of rejecting them, the audience is taught how to create appropriate opportunities for including them in social activities. The Silent Child has been produced with a low budget but with high standards, he added. 23 23 The letter, which is comprised of five guidelines, was unveiled during a special ceremony at the Art Bureau on Sunday evening. In his first advice, the Leader asked filmmakers to Preserve carefully the revolutionary course. Do not displace the revolutionary morality with technical effects or professional renown. Confirm honorably by your tongue and your actions that you are a revolutionary believer. The enemy s soft war has been set up based on lies, distortion, rumors, censorship and boycotts. Your art can neutralize the enemy s actions, the second advice reads. In his third guidance, the Leader said, An intention of the enemy is to stimulate disappointment and pessimism. Reasons for hope are numerous in the country. Your art is able to kindle hope, zeal and movement based on the realities. A critical documentary film is useful and also necessary. It should be conscientious and redemptive in approach. An aggressive, demeaning and anarchistic manner of criticism turns its advantage into damage. Satirical language helps the documentary be more useful and efficient, the fourth guide reads. Consider God s satisfaction in your works and ask Him for help, the letter concluded. 33 33 Life in the mountains: Skiing in Iran January 29, 2018 Maybe not the first that comes to mind, snow-capped mountains above Tehran are home to some of the world s best ski resorts where powder hounds can enjoy famous Iranian hospitality. Amongst uppermost are Dizin, Tochal, Shemshak and Darbandsar, all situated within some 100 kilometers of the capital city and up to international standards. The resorts also cater to desires of domestic holidaymakers and sightseers who seek to escape from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. Being quite high, the ski areas retain their snow quite well as the season usually stretches from November all the way through to May. Here is a peek into the four ski resorts dotted in the Alborz mountain range. Dizin Located some 100km north of Tehran, Dizin is by far the biggest resort in Iran equipped with three gondolas and 12 chairlifts. It takes around 2 hours to get there if the road is quite clear. It is the liveliest of the cited resorts and is where the locals go to unwind on their weekend. If one is going to stay overnight up on the mountain, it may be the best place to do so.

34 Dizin reaches an altitude of 3,600 meter and therefore boasts more than a one kilometer of vertical difference. Terrain at this resort is great for those intermediate skiers and boarders trying to move into that more advanced category. It also has smaller and easier hikes for skiers and boarders beginning to dabble in backcountry terrain. Overall, Dizin may be best for intermediates. Shemshak and Darbandsar Along the way to Dizin, on a road that starts from northeast Tehran, one can find two resorts are located next to each other; Darbandsar and Shemshak. They are around 90 minutes from Tehran while Dizin is another 35 minutes on from Shemshak when the road is open. Despite Shemshak and Darbandsar both being quite a bit smaller than Dizin, they boast remarkable terrain on-piste and towering mountains behind the ski areas that will leave avid backcountry goers licking their lips. Shemshak has two main lifts which are double chairs. While they are quite slow, they take you quite high up the mountain and open up some nice intermediate runs on-piste and some very nice off-piste runs. Darbandsar is a little smaller than Shemshak with just one main lift. It is sloped on one side which means you are skiing on the side of the mountain a little bit. Tochal The smallest of the four resorts, Tochal can be reached via a four-mile journey by cable car that leaves from the northern suburbs of Tehran. At 3963m, Tochal ski

35 resort is the fifth highest resort in the world, ensuring a long season from December to at least April and sometimes June. Tochal is good for convenience and price, but the better terrain may be found at the other resorts. When it comes to comfortable accommodation, both Dizin and Shemshak have large hotels that will almost always have space. There are also several privatelyowned cottages around that can be rented out. Prices for these vary on the quality of the cottage. Nightlife can be limited in resorts as most Iranians prefer to socialize at home in the evening. A brief look at biblical tomb in Iran January 28, 2018 The tomb of the biblical prophet, Daniel, in southwestern Iran is daily revered by great numbers of domestic pilgrims including the Jewish community. Surmounted by a massive cone in white plaster, the mausoleum of biblical prophet attracts foreign travelers as well. The mausoleum cannot be missed while traversing Shush, though its architecture is of no great antiquity. It contains two courtyards, each encircled by adjoining chambers and porches.

36 The pilgrimage also offer some accommodations to visitors willing for an overnight stay.according to Atlas Obscura, there are many places that claim to be the traditional burial place of the biblical prophet. But the tomb located in Shush is the most widely accepted and the first that was mentioned by Benjamin of Tudela, a medieval Jewish traveler whose journeys preceded Marco Polo s by about 100 years, and who first visited Asia between 1160 and Shush, which was once a crossroads of various civilizations, is sprawled on parts of ancient Susa at the edge of the Iranian plateau in the lower Zagros mountain range. UNESCO says the region contains several layers of superimposed urban settlements in a continuous succession from the late 5th millennium BC until the 13th century CE. PHOTO: A view of Daniel mausoleum in Shush, southwest Iran What names Tehrani parents choose for their children? January 28, 2018 In all societies, the names people give to their children are subjected to different sociological and even political justifications. Besides, most of the times, picking a name reveals beliefs and history of the parents. Sociologist Abbas Abdi conducted a research on Tehrani babies born from Iranian calendar year 1375 (March 1996-March 1997) to 1394 (March 2015-March 2016) in a book titled An Evolution in Picking Names for Children in Tehran.

37 The book was discussed during a meeting last week at the Iran s National Library and Archives. He had previously conducted a research on the process of picking name in Tehran from Iranian calendar year 1345 (March 1966-March 1967) to 1375 (March 1996-March 1997) in a book named A Voice that never Heard. The names people pick to give their children have always been an important criteria for sociological studies of a community, Abdi said. We never fully understand the reasons of parents for choosing a name for their babies. The criteria for choosing names have a very wide range and are complex as well. He said that he considered items like the name of mother, father and the baby s birthplace, in this case Tehran, in his research. Three cultures impact picking names in Iran, which are divided into subcultures themselves. One is the Islamic culture, according to which, people pick names like Fatemeh and Hossein for their children that is understandable, he explained. Traditional Islamic and national Islamic are subdivisions for this kind of name picking, he added. Another one is the national culture, which leads to choosing names from sources like Shahnameh and some names with Zoroastrian roots have been added to this group in recent years. The third is the Western culture, which is controlled by laws imposed by National Organization for Civil Registration and mostly shows itself in names picked for baby girls, he explained. According to the National Organization for Civil Registration, Iranian Muslims cannot give names with non-persian, non-islamic roots to their children, however, folklore names are exceptions. Eating like an Iranian: A survey on Persian food January 27, 2018 In this series of articles you can trace cookery art in Iran during history up to present. The survey sheds light on different aspects of Iranian life, culture and civilization. Timurid Empire ( ) The Divan of Bos haq At ema, written by the 14th century satirical poet Fakhreddin Hallaj Shirazi, is one of the most ancient sources about Persian cuisine, offering information about a wide range of Iranian foods consumed during that time as well as past centuries.

Fakhreddin Hallaj Shirazi used Persian culinary vocabulary and kitchen terminology in his poetry. The book also is a great source for food manners and Iranian taste during past centuries. In his poems and proses, he describes different kinds of food by detail. He named the ingredients of the foods like meat, dairy, fruits, herbs, breads and sweets in his writings as well. Below you can find a general introductory to foods used during that era in different categories: 38

39 Meats: Meat, poultry and egg were frequently used for cooking during Timurid Empire. The meat was used by different social classes during the era and was one of the most important nutrition in that time. Roasted lamb was one of the most favorite foods. Meat of chicken, duck, goose, partridge and grane were also amongst the ingredients widely used during that era, especially in coastal cities. Kalleh pacheh (a dish of boiled cow or sheep's feet and head), tripe, lamb s heart and liver, and fat were also cooked during Timurid era. In the Divan, there is recipe in which, a complete egg is used in middle of Kufta, a kind of meatball, which is cooked in some parts of Iran today. Dairy: Milk and dairies have a great role in Persian cuisine from long time ago. Milk, yogurt, cheese, butter, animal fat and doogh (a yogurt-based beverage) were used during that era.

40 Soaked figs in milk was one of the main breakfast items used during Timurid era. Shir Berenj (a kind of rice pudding), milk and date, and milk and honey were also used during that time. Cheese and bread accompanied with dates, walnut, fresh herbs and melon was considered as a complete meal. Charbeh, which means clotted cream, made from the milk of cows, sheep, or goats, was also named several times as breakfast in Divan of Bos haq At ema. According to his poems, borani (Persian appetizer made with yogurt and some type of vegetable such as spinach) with artichoke was also widely used during that time. As it seems, butter was used as a kind of frying oil. However, tallow and animal fat were mainly used for frying during that era. Doogh and Kashk (dairy product made from drained yogurt) were either used as the main meal with bread or as a side dish. Seeds and nuts: Different kinds of nut including walnut, almond, hazelnuts and pistachio and acorn as well as sesame, the black seeds, cardamom, lentil, mung and pea were widely used during that era. The popular fruits were grape, lemon, figs, pomegranate, pear, black and white berries, quince, citron, bergamot, watermelon, rhubarb, tamarind, date and lemon. As it is mentioned in the Divan, during Ilkhanate ( ) and Timurid Empire ( ) date played an important role in foods and was used as the meal during breakfast and dinner with cheese, walnut, yoghurt, tahini, Shir Berenj and animal oil.

41 Herbs: Chives (tareh), cilantro (geshniz), purslane (khorfeh), lettuce, radish, onion, beetroot, garlic, carrot, pepper, turnip, bean, carnation, oregano, eggplant, zucchini and artichoke were also used during that time. Breads and grains: During Timurid era, grains were more widely used than today. Wheat, rice, barely, corn and millet were used that time. Wheat was used more than rice due to its abundance in different parts of country and was used for bread.

42 Different kinds of Aash and halva as well as haleem (Persian stew with wheat or barley) were cooked with wheat during that time. The haleem was served with cinnamon during that time. Sometimes they made haleem with corn as well. In Persian cooking, rice has been always widely used as the main grain. Its flour was used for different kinds of food, halva and confectionaries. Rice was cooked and served during that time in different methods, including kateh - sticky rice cooked in small amounts of water and oil - as well as chelo - rice boiled in a lot of water and cooked afterwards. Iranian researchers to breed scorpion, milk venom for medical purposes January 26, 2018 A group of Iranian researchers at the Islamic Azad University of Najafabad, central province of Isfahan, succeeded in coming up with plans to maintain scorpions in captivity for venom extraction purposes. Currently a group of three researchers who have submitted the idea of scorpion captive breeding are growing the animals at the lab to collect scorpion venom. The whole project has cost some 1 billion rials (nearly $22,000) so far and the venom can be used for treatment of diseases such as cancer, arthritis, and multiple sclerosis (MS).

43 Scorpion venom is a substance that has recently gone through testing to determine its possible benefits for human medicine. It seems that scorpion venom is more than a potentially dangerous defense mechanism for an arachnid. Current research on scorpion venom is slow going, but there are a number of medical possibilities. Some people believe scorpion venom can one day be used to cure Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis. It has already been explored to help with some cases of multiple sclerosis and cancer, and to help with heart transplants. Some people hope scorpion venom will be used as a painkiller one day. Scorpion venom tops the list of world most expensive liquids. Scorpion venom costs $39,000,000 per gallon while human blood, valued at $1,500 per gallon, is at the bottom of the list. PHOTO: A shop window displays handcrafted metalwork by Iranian artisans University of Tehran among Webometrics world top universities January 30, 2018 The University of Tehran is among the top 500 higher education institutes worldwide in the Webometrics Ranking. Since 2004, the Ranking Web (or Webometrics Ranking) is published twice a year (data is collected during the first weeks of January and July for being public at the end of both months), covering more than 27,000 Higher Education Institutions worldwide. Webometrics intends to motivate both institutions and scholars to have a web presence that reflect accurately their activities. If the web performance of an institution is below the expected position according to their academic excellence, university authorities should reconsider their web, open access and transparency policy, promoting substantial increases of the volume and quality of their electronic publications.

45 The Webometrics Rank of a university is strongly linked to the volume and quality of the contents it publishes on the Web. Size (number of pages) of the main web domain of the institution (presence), number of external networks (subnets) originating backlinks to the institutions webpages (impact), number of citations from top authors according to the source (openness), a and number of papers amongst the top 10% most cited in 26 disciplines (excellence) are the factors deciding universities ranking in Webometrics. The University of Tehran holds the 455th place, with continental ranking of 63. Moreover, the university is ranked 7th in the Middle East. Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Sharif University of Technology, Amirkabir University of Technology, Tarbiat Modares University, Isfahan University of Technology, Iran University of Science & Technology, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, and Shiraz University came in 566th, 582nd, 843rd, 855th, 895th, 922nd,963rd, 1074th, and 1197th places respectively. Harvard University, Stanford University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology are the top three ranking universities in Webometrics. Persian traditional medicine: Chicory distilled water January 21, 2018 From past time, Chicory distilled water, called Araq-e Kasni in Persian, has been on hand in most Iranian houses. With its cooling characteristics, Chicory distilled water reduces body temperature and is great for liver diseases. It decreases the amount of yellow bile in the liver. Yellow bile facilitates the transfer of blood and nutrients from capillaries to the remote body organs and is also in charge of metabolism of fats and lipids and ease digestion. However, in case it gets abundant in the body it can trigger some health conditions such as liver disorders. Chicory distilled water is diuretic and has laxative effects. Chicory has been listed as one of the 38 plants that are used to prepare bach flower remedies, a kind of alternative medicine. However, according to Cancer Research UK, "there is no scientific evidence to prove that flower remedies can control, cure or prevent any type of disease, including cancer".

49 Library and Documentation Center for Natural Resources of Iran January 18, 2018 Located at the 150-hectare National Botanical Garden, the Library and Documentation Center for Natural Resources of Iran is the country s most important reference library in the field of natural resources. The library was founded in 1968 along with the establishment of the Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands (RIFR). Around five years ago, the library moved to the present 600-square-meter location. The new design of the two-story library provides ample space for the library collection for the next 50 years. The library s 23,150-plus volume collection is particularly strong in natural resources, with some publications dating back to the 19th century addressing plant culture, horticulture, deserts, medicinal plants, forestry and botany. Kept on the ground floor of the library, some of the references cannot be found elsewhere in the country as they offer a unique, one of a kind selection. The library also houses books featuring information about other subjects such as natural sciences, mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, medicine, biology, animal sciences and zoology. The collection comes in the form of English and non-english references, Atlases, maps, research projects, scientific reports, dissertations, journals dating back to the late 19th century, CDs, books, and e-books. Since the library is on the outskirts of the capital, it mainly attracts students who pursue a degree in environmental engineering; although the collection also serves members, professional horticulturists, researchers, and the public as well.

50 A staircase in the middle of the library leads visitors to the lower story where all the non-circulating collection that is English and non-english references are shelved. Snake plants, otherwise known as mother-in-law s tongues or viper's bowstring hemp, along with some various sized pine cones, picked straight from the garden, are laid on the staircase with stainless steel handrails, decorating the library while creating a nature-friendly environment inside. The natural landscape of the garden offers a beautiful view from the library while providing a lovely, tranquil environment for visitors and students to sit at tables and enjoy hours of study. The library has exclusively 300 members who are entirely from the botanical garden and RIFA staff. Portugal and Spain stand out as the favorites to progress from Group B, but in Iran and Morocco they have been drawn against two tricky teams who are absolutely capable of bloodying noses. Portugal will face Iran in their final group stage match in Saransk on June 25. Iran have a very experienced coach (Carlos Queiroz) and they are a dangerous team. Iran participated in the last World Cup and they had a chance to advance to the next round until their last game, Santos said in an interview with wort.lu.

67 I remember that when we arrived at the UEFA Euro 2016, they underestimated Icelanders. I was alert at that time and they are at the World Cup again. We will take nothing for granted when we face our rivals at the 2018 World Cup, he added. Iran are a very strong team. In qualifying round, they did not lose a single match and only conceded two goals in their last game with Syria, when everything was decided, Santos said. I think everybody knows what Carlos has done with his team. Iran without having won a great title, are a difficult team, the Portugal coach concluded. 2 Iranian fencers win medals at 2018 Tournoi Satellite January 29, 2018 Mohammad Rahbari and Ali Pakdaman from Iran won a gold and bronze medal at the individual category of Tournoi Satellite Fencing World Cup competitions currently underway in Georgia. The country has made a lot of efforts since then to be able to host the championships once more, and to that end, offered a proposal to the UWW on a collaborative holding of the events, which was approved during a session in 2016 in Hungary and later in 2017 in Paris. At the Paris session, Iran s representative noted the reducing number of applicants for hosting the international wrestling competitions due to financial and executive difficulties, and made the proposal for a collaborative holding of the championships with another country. The members of the UWW board of directors approved the plan and agreed on selecting Iran for the freestyle category of the events in 2020, while Finland would hold the other two categories. 69

83 In response to Jordan King Abdullah's anti-iran claims, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman said the principled, stable and unchanging policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran has always been contributing to peace, stability and security in the region. Calling Jordan King Abdullah' claims at odds with realities and the demand of people and most countries in the region for the establishment of peace and sustainable security, Ghasemi said the Islamic Republic has always sought peace, stability and security in the region and takes advantage of every opportunity to promote dialogue aimed at solving regional problems. In a discussion session with CNN s Fareed Zakaria on Thursday at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2018 in Davos, Switzerland, Jordan's King claimed that Iran was meddling in the affairs of a number of Arab countries and exploiting militia and religion in regional conflicts. He also called Saudi Arabia'a role in the Middle East as positive which draws red lines for Iran s worrying activities. "Such unfounded statements cannot deny the stabilizing role of Iran in combating terrorism and contributing to security," he noted, adding "Jordan's statements made under the current difficult and perilous conditions can never serve the interests of regional governments and nations; they are only beneficial to ill-wishers, occupiers and aggressors who do not tolerate peace, economic development, territorial integrity and national sovereignty of countries in this sensitive region of the world. Iran invites the world to constructive dialogues focused on constructive outcomes to eliminate misunderstandings and to initiate cooperation in the region, and "we,

84 as always, welcome any positive and soothing attitudes to strengthen peace and stability in the region." Guinea interested in cooperating in automotive, steel industries January 23, 2018 MP and a member of Iran-Guinea-Bissau Parliamentary Friendship Group says that Guinea parliamentary delegation has visited Iran s automotive and steel manufacturing sectors, and is interesting in cooperating in Iran in these sectors. Noting that Guinea-Bissau has rich reserves of bauxite, potassium and uranium, he said that Guinea wants Iran to cooperate with it in these sectors. He said that Guinea-Bissau called for the transfer of technology from Iran to help the country s fisheries sector. He said that Guinea-Bissau delegation visited Iran's automotive and steel industry and want to cooperate with Iran in these sectors.

85 He said that Guinea-Bissau will officially invite the Iranian parliamentary delegation to visit that country to expand bilateral relations between the two countries. Iran ready to export cooperatives products to Kenya January 22, 2018 Chairman of Iran Chamber of Cooperatives Bahman Abdollahi pointed to make use of capacities of cooperatives sector between Iran and Kenya and export of products manufactured by the cooperative societies of the two countries and said, Islamic Republic of Iran has voiced its readiness to strengthen cooperation and interaction in the field of cooperatives. Broadening cooperation and interaction with other countries in the cooperatives sector is one of the main objectives of Chamber of Cooperatives, Abdollahi maintained. He put the total trade volume exchanged between Iran and Kenya in the past Iranian calendar year in 1395 (ended March 20, 2017) at $50 million and said, agricultural, industrial tourism and services sectors constitute the most important activities of the cooperatives sector, so that joint cooperation can be expanded between the two countries in the field of export of relevant products.

86 Since Kenya stands at the first rank among African countries in the cooperatives sector, Iranian cooperative societies are interested in organizing cooperatives in Kenya, he opined. Turning to the problems of banking exchanges between Iran and Kenya, he said, effective steps have been taken in this regard to set up a joint account in a thirdparty country in order to ease financial transactions between the two countries. We propose to hold a joint seminar between Iran and Kenya in order to introduce opportunities of cooperatives sector available in these two countries, he concluded. For her part, Kenyan Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran put the number of cooperative societies in Kenya at about 15,000 and said, currently, Kenya stands at the first rank among African states in terms of cooperatives and also 7th rank in the world.
