3 1988 General Recreation Survey ALBERTA RECREATION AND PARKS INTRODUCTION AND METHODOLOGY The 1988 General Recreation Survey is the fifth study conducted by Alberta Recreation and Parks to determine participation patterns of Albertans and the factors which influence their recreation activity choices. The information will be used to identify recreation trends and preferences, forecast future demands, and aid the department in targeting and marketing its services. The survey instrument consisted of four sections (see Appendix A for a copy of the survey). The first section investigated the household and respondent participation in a variety of social, creative, cultural, outdoor and sports activities. The second section enquires about the respondents' three favorite activities, an activity they would like to start and involvement as a volunteer. Section three asked the respondents' opinions on a number of provincial parks' developments and services. The final section requested demographic information about the respondents and their household. A random sample of 7,669 Alberta households were selected for the survey. The sampling unit was the individual household. Respondents for each household were selected on the basis of who would celebrate the next birthday. The sample was stratified according to the following proportions: Edmonton (19.2%), Calgary (23.4%), and the remainder of the province (57.5%). The data was collected by mail between April and July The surveys were mailed out to the household sample (N = 7,669) on March 31, 1988 (first wave mail out). Two weeks after the first wave mail out (April 15,1988) a post card reminder was sent to those households who had not responded. Another survey (second wave mail out) was mailed out on April 29,1988 to those who still had not responded. July 11,1988 was the final date for accepting surveys. Those with no forwarding address and those who declined to complete the survey were deleted from the mailing list. The effective sample size was 7,038 households. The first wave returns were from 2,985 households or 42.4% of the effective sample size. The second mail out yielded a further 1,059 responses, for a total response rate of 57.5%. Seventeen surveys were excluded because the respondents were under 18 years of age. Analysis of the 1988 General Recreation Survey is underway. Anyone wishing more information about the survey and results should contact: Planning Secretariat Room 1620 Standard Life Centre Jasper Avenue Edmonton, Alberta T5J 3N4 Phone:(403) The remainder of the report provides a descriptive summary (frequencies and percentages) of all the components of the survey questions.
