2 Title: Kamloops Canada Games collection Dates of Creation: Physical Description: 12 cm of textual records with intermittent objects Administrative History: The Canada Games is an amateur-level sporting event which occurs every two years in Canada, alternating between Summer and Winter Games. The event is organized by the Canada Games Council, with the first Winter Games being held in 1967 in Quebec City as part of Canada s Centennial celebrations. Summer sporting events include track and field, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, canoe kayak, cycling, diving, fencing, golf, mountain biking, rowing, sailing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, triathalon, volleyball, and wrestling. Winter sporting events include alpine skiing, archery, artistic gymnastics, badminton, biathalon, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, judo, ringette, shooting, speed skating, squash, synchronized swimming, table tennis, and wheelchair basketball. Former sporting events include boxing, BMX, box lacross, field hockey, rugby, and water polo. The Canada Games Council is a non-profit private organization incorporated in 1991, which acts as the major organizer for the Canada Games. The Council is responsible for coordinating efforts between various levels of Government and the local City s host society in terms of organizational planning, ceremonies and protocol, marketing, and sponsorship. Scope and Content: Collection consists of materials relating to the Canada Summer Games which was held in Kamloops, B.C. from August 8 to 23,. Included is a final report from the Kamloops Canada Games Society, a binder of samples of promotional material and memorabilia, printed promotional materials, media guides for the Canadian Provincial teams, and a small sampling of volunteer materials. 2

3 Custodial History: Material from four donations was brought together to form this collection during processing in Accession was donated to the Kamloops Museum and Archives on November 28, 2014 by Dianne Smith. Accession was donated at an unknown date by David Davies, who was a volunteer with the Kamloops Canada Games Society. Accession.086 was donated on November 15, by Eleanor Hancock. Accession was donated on January 18, 1994 by Elisabeth Duckworth. Notes: Source of supplied title: Title based on contents of collection.
