2 GREETINGS We are delighted that you have registered to attend Sportaccord 2009 and look forward to welcoming you to Denver in March. This kit is provided for delegates who may not be familiar with the event, to give you some background information on the event and some helpful hints on how to make the most of your time with us. It will also enable you to prepare for Sportaccord before you even get to Denver. Sportaccord week is very busy, with a full schedule of events and options for meeting new people, seeing colleagues, attending conference sessions and expanding your horizons. In order to benefit fully from the opportunities available, it is important that you consider what you want to accomplish during your visit and plan ahead (prior to the event) so that you can meet your objectives. SKI TRAIN Full day! Join us on a unique train excursion through the dramatic peaks of the Rockies to Winter Park/Mary Jane Resort, one of Colorado s most popular winter destinations. Buses will leave the Hyatt Regency Denver at 6:20am for a quick 5 minute transfer to Union Station where we will board the train. The Ski Train arrives at the base of Winter Park at 9:30am. Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing and sightseeing activities are available for the day. Ski/snowboard rental and lift ticket packages will be made available at a special Sportaccord discounted rate. At 4:15pm, the train departs Winter Park and arrives in Denver at 6:30pm where buses will transport you back to the Hyatt. Bidding City / National Event Organisation: 17% The annual Sportaccord convention is a 5-day gathering where International Sports Federations have their organisational meetings, while networking with members of the business community involved with sport. Attendance is capped at 1500 and the event has been sold out for the past three years. The event comprises: 1. The annual meetings of 104 International Sports Federations 2. The spring Executive Board meeting of the International Olympic Committee 3. 2 ½ days of high-level conference sessions, incorporating City Forum 4. An Exhibition 5. Scheduled networking opportunities throughout the week Since 2003, when Sportaccord first took place in Madrid, the event has been held in Lausanne, Berlin, Seoul, Beijing and Athens. Following this year s event in Denver, Sportaccord will be in Dubai in 2010, April. There are several international cities currently bidding to host future Sportaccords and one unique aspect of the event is the fact that it is held in a different country every year, allowing IFs and all of the delegates, speakers and exhibitors the opportunity to experience the facilities, culture, food and hospitality of sporting cities throughout the world. Who owns Sportaccord? Sportaccord is owned by the Association of International Sports Federations (AGFIS), the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) and the Association of Winter Olympic Federations (AIOWF). These three associations have a collective membership of over 100 international sports federations who in turn own and manage over 1,000 international sports events in over 100 different sports discipline THE SPORTACCORD NETWORKER WILL ENABLE YOU TO: Create a unique personal profile describing yourself and your organisation. Identify individuals with whom you would like to meet. Schedule introductory meetings by exchanging contact details with other attendees through the internal mail system. A dedicated Networker area will be available near the Exhibition area for use as an initial meeting point, with space available to sit and chat. 5 WHO S WHO AT SPORT ACCORD Anna Hellman Executive Director Anna has headed up Sportaccord since 2005 and oversees the team and all aspects of the annual event, as well as the many additional products associated with Sportaccord. She liaises with our Steering Committee and Board on plans for the future as host cities are determined and on the development of the Sportaccord brand, as it continues to evolve and expand. A Swede living in Switzerland, she enjoys spending time outdoors - either on the ski slopes or the tennis court -- in her spare time. anna.hellman@sportaccord.com Tim Goethals Head of Operations Working both at ASOIF and Sportaccord, Tim is a keen tennis player. Having worked at FIFA before joining the Sportaccord team in 2006, Tim has a Master in Sports Management and Business Economics. Previously working in Finance at a big five management consulting company in Belgium, where he orignates from, Tim lives now in Neuchatel, Switzerland with his wife and two kids. When time, he enjoys reading comic books. tim.goethals@sportaccord.com George Jonasson Operations Manager Having recently finished his Bachelor's Degree in Sports Marketing & Event Management, George joined the Sportaccord team in April 2008 and was on board for the convention in Athens. He coordinates and oversees most of the Technical Set Up and Printed Material for all of the Sportaccord events. When not working, George spends his time snowboarding, playing the guitar, or on skates, since he is a passionate Ice Hockey player. Originally from Sweden, George currently lives in Lausanne, Switzerland. george.jonasson@sportaccord.com Fiona Lunnon Head of Sales & Marketing Fiona heads up the sales and marketing team at Sportaccord and is responsible for the delivery of the exhibition and the rights and benefits of our sponsors and exhibitors. She has been part of the Sportaccord team since the first edition in Madrid in 2003 and is involved in Sportaccord's commercial development strategy. He was staff correspondent of Variety in Rome and co-produced Power Plays, a six-hour TV documentary on the American sports business for PBS, Showtime and the UK s Channel 4. 6 A.C.R.O.N.Y.M.S. ASOIF NOC Olympic Charter EOC Association of Summer Olympic International Federations. The Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) is a non-profit Association, and its membership consists of the 26 IFs (see IF list attached) that are on the Summer Olympic Programme. Has been established in 1983 to coordinate and defend the common interests of its members. ASOIF s mission is to unite, promote and support the International Summer Olympic Federations; to preserve their autonomy, while coordinating their common interests and goals. HQ in Lausanne, Switzerland. AIOWF Association of the International Olympic Winter Sports Federations. The Association of the International Olympic Winter Sports Federations (AIOWF) is a non-profit Association, and its membership consists of the representing the 7 IFs that are on the Winter Olympic Programme. HQ in Zurich, Switserland. GAISF Association of International Sport Federations: The Association of International Sport Federations is a non-profit Association, and its membership consists of the 104 IFs, Olympic and Non-Olympic. GAISF mission is to unite, support and promote its member International Sports Federations and Organisations for the co-ordination and protection of their common aims and interests, communication and co-operation, while at the same time conserving and respecting their autonomy. Has been created in 1967 and has its HQ in Lausanne. IF International (Sport) Federation: The International Federations are the international non-governmental organizations administering their respective sport at a world level and encompassing organizations administering sport at a national level. NF National Federations. The National Federations (NF) are the sporting bodies in a specific territory that govern the respective sport on a national level and which are affiliated to the respective National Olympic Committee and International Federation. National Olympic Committees. The National Olympic Committees (NOC) are the IOC recognized organizations, which develop and protect the Olympic Movement in their respective countries in accordance with the Olympic Charter. IOC International Olympic Committee. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the supreme authorithy of the Olympic Movement. The IOC is an international nongovernmental non-profit organization whose mission is to lead the Olympic Movement and the promotion of Olympism in accordance with the Olympic Charter. HQ in Lausanne, Switzerland. IOC Executive Board: The IOC Executive Board has the responsibility of managing the affairs of the IOC (similar to a Board of Directors). The consists of the IOC president, four Vice-Presidents and ten additional members. IOC Members IOC Members are chosen or elected from among persons considered qualified by the IOC and represent and promote the interests of the IOC and of the Olympic Movement in their countries and in the organisations of the Olympic Movement in which they serve. There are currently 107 members, 24 honorary members and 1 honour members. IOC Session Is the general assembly of the members of the IOC, and is held at least once a year (similar to a shareholders meeting). The Session is the supreme organ of the IOC and adopts, modifies and interprets the Olympic Charter. Its decisions are final. Next IOC sessions will be held in Copenhagen in October IPC International Paralympic Committee. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is the supreme authorithy of the Paralympic Movement. The IOC is an international, non-governmental, non-profit organization whose mission is to lead the Paralympic Movement and the promotion of the sport for athletes with a disability. The Olympic Charter is the codification of the Fundamental Priciples, Rules and Bye-laws adopted by the IOC. It governs the organization and operation of the Olympic Movement and stipulates the conditions for the celebration of the Olympic Games. Olympic Family Olympic Family is a general term used to group together various constituents of the Olympic Movement. Olympic Movement The movement, led by the IOC, encompassing those organizations, atheletes and other persons who agree to be guided by the Olympic Charter. OG Olympic Games OCOG Organising Committee of Olympic Games (Summer/Winter). E.g. London 2012, Sochi 1014, etc. The staging of the Games is entrusted by the IOC to the NOC of the host country. The host country NOC forms the OCOG as the organization that is responsible for managing the operations necessary for the staging of the Games. LOCOG The London Organising Committee for the Summer Games of 2012 VANOC The Vancouver Organising Committee for the Winter Games of 2010 ANOC Association of National Olympic Committees. The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) is the organization that represents all the National Olympic Committees of the world. HQ in Paris, France. ANOCA Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa: The Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) is the continental association formed to represent and further the interests of National Olympic Committees of Africa. HQ in Nigeria. European Olympic Committees: The European Olympic Committees (EOC) is the continental association formed to represent and further the interests of National Olympic Committees of Europe. HQ in Italy. ONOC Oceania National Olympic Committees: The Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) is the continental association formed to represent and further the interests of National Olympic Committees of Oceania. HQ in Fidji. OCA Olympic Council of Asia: The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is the continental association formed to represent and further the interests of National Olympic Committees of Asia. HQ in Koweit. PASO Pan American Sports Organisation: The Pan American Sports Organisation (PASO) is the continental association formed to represent and further the interests of National Olympic Committees of the Americas. HQ in Mexico. CAS Court of Arbitration for Sport: The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is an institution independent of any sports organisation, which offers parties a means of settling disputes through arbitration and/or mediation adapted to the specific needs of the sports world. Based in Switzerland. WADA World Anti-Doping Agency: The mission of the World Anti- Doping Agency (WADA) is to promote, and coordinate and monitor at international level the fight against doping in sport in all forms. WADA cooperates with intergovernmental organisations, governments, public authorities and other public and private bodies fighting against doping in sport.
