I had been chosen to be part of the Making Choices programme. What is the Making Choices programme? The programme teaches students what university life is like, how to cover the costs and what courses are available. Throughout our visits, we took part in STEM subject lectures including Science, Maths and Medicine. My personal favourite was the Medicine session. Without the programme, I would never have thought of going into Medicine. When I was at the graduation I was given a BrightMed leaflet. BrightMed is a scheme run by the University of Sussex in Brighton to help people between Year 9 and Year 13 decide whether they want to become a doctor. I have already had 2 sessions and I am very grateful that I got a stepping stone in the right direction. Without Miss Wolberg choosing me for the Making Choices programme, I would have never discovered BrightMed. Hopefully the Year 8 s this year will take as much from the amazing experience as I did! Isabella Bennett, Year 9 Lost Property As a reminder, please can all parents/guardians ensure that your child s clothing is named. Since September, we have accumulated 4 black sacks of lost property. If items are named they are returned to their owner, but very few items are, meaning that if they are not claimed by the end of each term they are disposed of. Thank you for your assistance. 2
3 My Experience At The Youth Olympic Games On 9 October 2018, I competed in the Youth Olympics for Zimbabwe. Although I have competed many times abroad this was my most nerve racking experience by far. To qualify I had to be within the top 5 in the world for my weight group, in which after 6 tough months I was. It was very stressful trying to qualify because I had less time than everyone else as I had to wait until I was 15 and they are all already 16 and 17. So as soon as I was registered with the International Judo Federation, I started competing on the world circuit and trust me there was no playing around! Over the period of qualifying, I have travelled to Morocco, Burundi, Poland, Portugal, Hong Kong, Macau and Zimbabwe. Throughout competing in these competitions, I kept on medalling but not winning gold and time was running out. At my last chance and the last ranking competition in Macau, China I won the almighty gold putting me right at number 5 in the world; therefore I qualified! I only had a couple of months to get into tip top shape. But time flew by On the 3 October I flew out to Buenos Aires, Argentina. When I arrived, me, my coach and my family were taken to the Olympic village; this is where I would be living for the next 2 weeks as, after I had competed, I would stay for the full Olympic experience. I met my team - 2 rowers, a swimmer, a runner, a horse rider and a hockey team they were all really nice and welcoming; we were soon all friends. The opening ceremony was on the 6 October. All the teams paraded in front of the cameras and crowds. It was amazing! There were so many athletes, everyone cheering and watching the unbelievable performances. It was the most incredible thing I have ever seen, I was so lucky to have been there and experienced it. I fought on the 9 th (individuals) and 10 th (mixed teams). For my individuals, it was a tough day, I guess because I was fighting the best in the world! I fought my best and was placed 7 th which overall is a good result. It was honestly the scariest but most exhilarating experience. The next day I fought in team Athens and we won silver, but I can t even explain the pressure of being in a team. I was the one who lost my team the gold medal in the final. I felt so disappointed and I thought I had let my team mates down. However, no one hated me, we just all hugged and celebrated our silver medal, we didn t even expect to get that far! Overall I am really proud of what I have achieved and I feel like this is just the beginning of my journey as an athlete. I hope one day to fight at the World Championships and Olympic Games. Christi-Rose Pretorius, Year 11 3
